• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

What Brand or Type of Oil Should I Use in my Ryker??? Must it be safe for wet-clutch?

Exactly what I was looking for. I am already running the Amsoil 10w40 motorcycle oil in my Spyder. I had seen your earlier post regarding the Amsoil 10w40 XL. I just wanted to see if you were still recommending it after a few years. I already had it in my cart on the Amsoil site ��

Yes, any good automotive oil will work great in the Ryker. I highly recommend a full synthetic. Just don't put it in your Spyder!

Automotive oil can be used in a Ryker due to its lack of a wet clutch. The Spyders have a wet clutch that shares oil with the engine, so it requires an oil that made for such applications. I run the Amsiol 10w40 motorcycle oil in my Spyder, but will run the Amsoil XL 10w40 in my Ryker. Same weight, different applications.

After all, the thread is in the Ryker section, and I've now expanded the thread title to include the word 'Ryker'; but there's a number of posts in the thread pointing out that the original question in the first post was 'What oil should I use in my Ryker', and that question was expanded in Wick76's extension question, asking if anyone had actually been running conventional oil in their Ryker for an extended period, cos their Rykers don't have a wet clutch to make it necessary that they use motorcycle oil - even if some dealers still do use motorcycle oil (most likely because it's the they've got for all the Spyders they service) rather than using whatever oil is actually best for the Rykers! :thumbup:

And as BajaRon et al have posted more than once in this thread, while it's fine to use a 'non-motorcycle oil' in a Ryker, it's NOT anywhere near as safe to use such an oil in your Spyder!! :lecturef_smilie:

Thanks Peter, I certainly apologize if confused the thread, just trying to clarify in my mind the Ryker brand vs Spyder as to the oil application. Maybe just shut down the thread would work.

But then we'd almost certainly end up with yet another 'What oil brand/type is safe for my Ryker' oil thread the next time someone wanted to know if it was safe to use 'non-motorcycle oil' in their Ryker?? :gaah:

And I've just spent some hours consolidating as many of the other Ryker oil threads that I could find down from 5 pages of search results (about 150 threads!) into just one page of results, and AFAICS so far, now this thread is the ONLY one of those threads with posts in it that ask if it's necessary to use wet-clutch safe oil in a Ryker... :rolleyes:

Like I've posted many times before, it's not unreasonable to add to the knowledge base in an older thread, or even ask for clarification on the topic; just so long as you check the dates of the first post and the last few posts in said thread BEFORE you post any response or ask for more info; and you shouldn't necessarily expect answers from posters/members who are &/or may no longer be around. Maybe I'm gonna hafta start adding that you really should read the thread before replying, too!! :dontknow:

After all, surely it's FAR BETTER to have all the discussion on a given subject/topic gathered into just one thread (if that is at all possible! :p ) than it is to have the question raised in one thread, but then really only fully answered in one or more other threads; or even asked and answered repeatedly in numerous threads so that no-one has any idea if there's new or different information in any of the other numerous threads that might be out there?!? :banghead:

I was just looking at a liter container of Synthetic Rotella t6 5/40. It has a picture of a motorcycle on it and my Napa man said that the JASO ma/ma2 certification is what makes it wet clutch compatible. For what it is worth I just bought a used 900 rally and that is what will be going in the crankcase when it's oil change time. It's almost winter here but I put 340kms on the new to me Ryker last weekend, and had the wife on the back for the last 200kms or so. SO MUCH FUN!!!!!

When I had my 2020 Ryker, BRP/XPS did not have a full synthetic for 10W40 (or was is 5W40?).
Personal recommendation:
1. Use M/C if you want, but it is NOT necessary on a Ryker dry "clutch" (belt between adjustable sheaves), as on my Moto Guzzis and is a compromise in lubrication.
2. Use pure synthetic. Less oil companies are continuing semi-synthetic, which costs almost as much as pure synthitic.
3. BRP/XPS 10W40 was/is rated for ambient up to 104F. In the SW USA, running in ambient up to at least 116F, I used 10W50.
4. Use any major brand you may favor, but best to continue with that brand, should differences in additives have an interaction.

As for wet clutch motorcycles/Spyders, I have used 10W50 Castrol Power 1 since 2012, as my first Triumph Bonneville was prepped with it.
Exceptions for both Motgo Guzzi's requiring 10W60 (Motoul 7100)

In 1977, I sold a 71 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu to a friend. I had used only 10/30 Quakerstate since new; but my friend liked Castrol (which I have mainly used for Japanese and British bikes). He switched, but complained that it was using oil. Previously, the 307 (Quad carb, aluminum high rise manifold, Hooker headers, aftermarket dual exhausts) had about 70,000 miles, but no oil consumption could be noted on the dip stick, between 3,000 mile interval oil changes.
After a couple years, he in turn sold it to a mutual friend, who went back to the original oil and then had no notable consumption between oil changes.
Did the additives conflict?

Thus my encouragement to chose a quality major brand of oil and continue with it, if at all practical.
 
Personally, I love oil threads... but to a lot of folks point, you can read until you can't see out of one eye and go blind in the other.

I am also a what is the best oil, hand wringing, neurotic, worry wart about putting just the right oil in this machine that I detested at first, but now cannot live without.

Here is what I found - Sit down, unwind, and watch clips of Robin Williams cooking with Martha Stewart...

Use the BRP oil until your warranty is up, then do what Baja Ron said. Go with Amsoil with the proper viscosity and proper spec for your bike. Sounds like you can use automotive oil in the Ryker. Amsoil makes both. Have used Amsoil in my truck and that is a great product for that application as well.

Then get on your bike and follow the advice of many on this forum. Ride more and worry less... :)

Take it from someone who used Liquimoly, Amsoil, Rotella T6, Mobile 1, and Motul 7100... all very fine oils. I can say with conviction that now both my bike and I (when I/we are not out riding) sleep through the night.

Even with all that, the best oil for your bike is one that is properly spec'ed for your bike and lets you sleep through the night too. Best of luck.
