Hi Spyder Lovers,
I've been receiving allot of inquiries on how I put premium sound on my Spyder. I made a video and placed it on my streaming server. Its about 8 min long and if you dont have broadband and Windows media player, you will need them to view. Heres the link. copy and paste to your browser, and it will auto open your media player. Enjoy.

Very Impressive. I was worried that there would be to much Air space using the entire trunk as the "Box" for the sub as most subs ive used in the past sound best at .25 cubic feet of airspace. But i must say definately nice work!!!!!

Did you hook up a toggle on the LED's to allow them to flash/solid/off because i know around here you can have them on solid or off but flashing will get you pulled over if your driving. I used to use this setup for my Cars for stereo competitions i love how they flash with the bass.

Any other mods you have done?

Charles that was awesome i can tell where the party is at when you are stopped. :2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs::yes::yes::yes::yes:

Neon, I haven't put one in yet, but its a "Radio Shack" visit from doing so. I think I will pick up a dual-throw switch from one of the marine shops around town.

Good Call on the marine grade much more reliable for a spyder :D I do like your setup though and might be adding something in the future when money is more available LOL

pretty cool setup.
I wish there was a better way than cutting hole in trunk.

Have you had to beef up your battery or charging system? Is there a big power drain?

As for the Headlights, they come on when you start the Spyder

Excellent video Charles and thank you.

Those are all great components and the sound is awesome.

One quik question though....

When you turn the key to activate the sound system, I don't see the headlights coming on... but I do see the lights on the bumpers coming on...

How did you do that?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

p.s. How much was the entire system?

Very cool video and nice set-up. Nice step-by-step and it sounds real nice. One quick thing though... that sub is marine grade and can handle water, but what about all the sorts of road debris and such that could come up underneath the Spyder. Are you not worried about damage to the sub in that manner?

Also, where did you get those housings for the speakers and how did you mount them?

Actually, If you look under the front, there is actually a skid plate under the tub. So the Sub is protected from things inadvertently popping up into the sub. That was one of the reasons I was able to move forward with the idea. As for the housingson the black speakers, thats the way they come. You just have to mount them in a fashoin theat they don't interfere with the turning radius of the handlebars. They attach from the back, so you have to remove the Gauge pod, and screw it in through the guage housing. The ons on the skirts come with those grills and match perfectly with the silver Spyders

Honestly, I didnt measure the amp draw. We left it running during the BRP Superbowl owners event for an hour, and the bike sarted right up. No rideability issues either while running. Now, If you get a different amp, all of that would most likely change. They are the biggest voltage hogs.
pretty cool setup.

Questions

How did you cut the holes in the fenders? Could you run the polk 6 inch speakers off of the Blaupunkt as well or do you need the other amp system to run those? Also any lessons learned from the installation. All of the parts will arive Monday :) Looks , Sounds great.

Make sure those speakers for the fenders are 401s (4") the 6" are too big for the fenders. I had to Bridge the output on the Blaupunkt amp to drive it, so, no you would need another amp.

So in total I have:
  • 2 3.5 in DWG Waterproof Motocycle speakers w/Amp
  • 1 Additional DWG Amp
  • 2 Polk MoMo 401 -(2nd DWG amp Drives these)
  • 1 Blaupunkt amp (bridged) for the Subwoofer
  • 1 Polk MoMo 8" Sub ( Single coil)
  • 1 Amp wiring kit
  • 1 3way stereo splitter cable ( radio shack) Like you would use to hook into an ipod or mp3 player.
Lessons:
  1. Measure, Measure MEASURE!
  2. As for the side speakers I pulled the side covers off, and used the speaker grills as my template to mark placement.
  3. Repeat step 1
  4. Repeat step 1 Again
  5. One more time....LOL
  6. Then drill within the markings using a bit large enough for a jigsaw blade. then jigsaw the inner circumference of the speaker..
  7. Better to cut the hole slightly small. ( like salt, you cant put it back once you cut too much.
As for the Sub, much the same way. I didnt pull the trunk off to do it I had access to shop tools which sped up the cutting.
I cut a ring out of plywood to raise the sub about 5/8 off the trunk surface. As I cut between the ribbings in the trunk tub floor, the Sub could not mount flush against the floor so I made the ring as an offset.

I also received a mail about Volume control:
Hello,

I have a couple questions for you. First where did you mount the volume control for the system? Second, did you get power directly from the battery or did you install a bus with inline fuse? Ok one more question, do both amps receive audio signal from the DWG 1021 AB? Alright one last question, where did you mount the negative terminal to the bike; or did you go from battery as well.

To answer this, each amp has a volume, and high/low bandpass control. I set baseline levels on those, but master volume is controlled directly from the Zune media player that I wear on my sport armband. Since the Zune also has radio, it worked really well to my personal listening style.

What the video didnt show was the second DWG Amp (still on order) So, the 2 speakers near the handlebars were not hooked up during the video, When that comes in it will be even better.

Ok, Power....Right now Im in-line fused, But I will be moving to a more centralized bower bus such as this:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_211FBXM68/StreetWires-FBXM68.html?tp=792

It will make power management much easier. As for ground, if you pull off the side covers there is a ground bolt in front of the engine and behind the trunk.(dead center of the Spyder) Personally its almost easier to go to the battery.
It the future, I will probably mount this fused distribution block, with a ground bus block nearby

Now as for the LEDs, I will be making another video. When I do I will pull the covers and try to show more detail..

Thanks for all the info. I do not want all that bass. Just something to listen to when riding do you think just getting the dwg speaker kit which includes the amp would be enough to hear when you are riding with a helment? Also can you show a close up of how you attached the speakers.

thanks again

Hi CZ,
You Can hear the DWGs but the sound is very "Treble". Hoestly I split off and use earplug style earphones as well when riding.. They cut wind noise and give me sound as well. I just dont turn it up to loud so I can hear surrounding sound. (I.E. emergency vehicles)

one last question...if I also get the fender polk system do I get a second dwg app or can I run both pair off one. For which ever solution how do I do that. I will have to either connect the two amps or connect two pair of speakers into one input on amp..just get splitters?
