Updated Info on RT/RS SE5 clutch "fix" campaign

Found somewhere on spyderlovers info on the clutch issue with the 2010 SE5's....called my warranty dealer...she got on computer and said WOW you are ahead of the curve. Her date for the activation of this "fix" campaign by BRP is 6/10/2010. So if you own a 2010 RT or RS SE5....get ahold of your warranty dealer...this is the clutch issue recall campaign.
Fortunately I have not had an issue, altho sometimes I wonder if it is going to shift down...when I stop...so far it has..but just had a little more hesitation than I thought should be...but I am the furthest thing from a mechanical person..so no red flags. Now the flag is waving and my parts gal has ordered in the fix parts for me and all their other customers.
Have a great day. Sun shining again..means the Spyder is calling me---ah such a tough life, this retirement is!!!

I am so glad to see that BRP has decided to recall our SE machines as this clutch issue has the potential to be very dangerous and a serious safety issue. I got lucky my spyder re-started every time, but others aren't so lucky.

Thanks for sharing this information!

I have had a few stalls on fast stops but thought it was odd but dealer hadn't heard anything about this. Oddly the last time it happened was when I was on my way to the dealer to replace a dead battery. I had to make a really hard stop when a car swerved across several lanes to an exit. Fortunately for me i was in the outside lane. As the Spyder came to a stop the engine died and since my battey was dead and had been jump started to get me on my way to the dealer it would not restart. I was able to jump off and push out of the lane and onto the down hill exit ramp and got off the freeway onto a side road.

I wish I had a photo of me by the Spyder on this side road. I had the seat up and my jumper cables in my hand kind of swinging the one end as vehicles went past. In about 15-20 minutes a guy saw me and laughed and turned around and gave me a jump.

It had done died other times on hard stops but we couldn't figure out why and it always restarted easily and i wasn't in danger.

This will be a relief to get this fixed and out of my head in preparing for hard stops.

Took mine in for the 600 mile maintenance and they are taking care of the "sticky clutch" problem at the same time. Mine had gotten to the point of stalling out at nearly every red light. Looks like I'll be without the spyder this weekend.

Hurry Up and Wait Time

My warranty dealer called and said that BRP notified them that their supplier of the parts for this "fix" have not shipped to BRP as of yesterday...hopefully this coming week....anyone else hearing that? My warranty dealer also mentioned that because of customs that sometimes the order sits and SITS at the border before it actually gets into the states...so another layer of hurry up and wait. This is all part of living in today's world. So not willing to spend any energy getting frustrated over what I cannot control. I can control washing my truck and ryding my Spyder...so that is what I'm doing!!! Today is a beautiful day to go Spyder Ryding...but I did promise my pickup a bath before I jump on the Spyder and leave...so guess I better get on that...
Have a great day....

Yeah this happens. The Customs folks have so much to look at, and a small workforce to get it done.

For me... We got the parts that BRP told my dealer to order. Then the "Recall" came out... And more parts are needed. So our baby gets to sit collecting dust instead of repaid... :gaah:

I guess BRP needs to watch a Fedex commercial.....I ship internationally all the time and with the right documentation and shipping company no problems. Come on for land sakes it is Canada, NAFTA... My opinion custom waits are BS:cus:

:agree: 100% correct! I will only add.... Even FedEx can and does have shipments stopped and inspected randomly. I was a Partner in a CD/DVD Replication Business for many years... We went to FedEx exclusively because they are so successful at getting it done with Canada. Only twice in the last three years I was there, did FedEx have one of our shipments "Impounded-Audited" Once was our clerks fault as he failed to sign one lousy document, the other was simply a random audit. Only stalled it for three days though  The other one... Still have not gotten it back last I heard:roflblack:

Thanks for the info

Since this involves my '10 RT SE5, I called my local dealer. They had heard nothing about a clutch recall. Service person is going to check and call me back. I thought my tranny was having a difficult time locating neutral. Perhaps that's related, perhaps not. Gotta solve the oil leak first, though :cus:....

Hurry Up & Wait

I've not even made the 1st payment on my new RTS with the SE5 tranny, and she still sits at the service shop, held hostage. I've had a problem with the SE5 since day 1 (May 26) & last Friday almost ran over a poor guy in the cross walk as my Unit decided it didn't want to stop & I had to slam the brakes and cause it to stahl. Took it to the dealer last Saturday for my 600 mile break-in service & explained the SE5 recall info, which they had no clue about. Now I'm told the parts are on order, but that they are not projected to be in to the factory til June 28th or so. I'm a Very Frustrated Spyder Owner, to say the least. Anyone else hear this about the parts being on back order?

"Official" Safety Recall Notice

FYI: I receiver the "SE5 Clutch Sticking Engaged" written recall notice in the mail today, dated June 7, 2010.

Dealers here in Ontario, Canada have yet to receive the necessary parts for the fix as of yet. I was told that the job should take about 2.5 hrs., but time will tell how long it will take to do the first one by your dealer.

Took us about 2 hours so 2.5 should be plenty of time. No need to drop the oil, just jack up the right side.

Recieved my letter today from BRP (clutch recall), bike going in this week.

Just as an FYI.. I have seen rumblings that BRP is potentially out of stock on one or more of the needed parts for the current recall. I am only suggesting that your dealer get all the parts before you take it down.

Or you could potentially be like me and have your ryde sitting there waiting for the parts at the dealer (Mine is waiting for the "O" rings, not because of the potential backorder, because the tech failed to tell my dealer they needed them changed and when the recall came out it is a requirement to change all the o-rings they remove).....

Also... It is my understanding that the backorder will be short, if the reading I have done on other sites rings true...

got my recall notice in the mail today. Taking in to dealer next week. They seemed to know about it and said they will have the parts to work on it.

Glad mine was fixed

I am glad I followed up with my dealer a couple of weeks ago having read Lamont's comments. It took some doing but the dealer finally gave in and called BRP and found out there really was a bulletin on the issue. MY parts were backordered, but for less than a week, and the repair was done by noon of the day I dropped it off.

The RT feels so much nicer, not having to wonder when and if it would stall. The shifting feels more precise, and it almost "eases" into 1st now.

I did a 300 mile ride this weekend and it did fine. It was very hot and humid, but had no problems even in the stop and go traffic. The temp would go up to the last line before the red area occasionally, but came down quickly as the fan came on. I suppose if I had any complaints, besides it being so hot, I would point to how hot the seat got, and the lack of a place t stretch out my legs.

I got 32 mpg, and that is with only 1300 miles on the RT.

Overall, it is doing well, and I hope it continues to do so now tht my one issue was addressed.

Recall

Dealer just called to reschedule my recall update. Parts are on backorder. UGH! No choice but to wait. At least it's driveable.

There are a total of three o-rings. I had a bad one before this problem and changed it. When we did the clutch repair we didn't change any of the o-rings and all is well some 11,000 miles later. You could put the whole thing back together with the original o-rings and change them out when the new ones came in but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need to. You could keep them as backup as they are pretty easy to change out. All you need to do is pull that cap and one snap-ring.

This is the bad one I had to replace.
