• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. trans will not shift after HID install

good day all i need some help, i have an 09 RS SE5 got it with 2300 miles on it last August (14) it now has 4900 miles on it. i have had no problems with it till this weekend. I installed HID lights in the head lights and fog lights ( direct plug and play) while I was in the garage installing ans testing each part of the install, i had to move the bike and it would not shift into gear 1st or rev. finished the install checked my connections and anything that i may have knocked loose everything secure. started it up looks great it shifted went for a ride all good. Monday rode to work got MSG on dash check transmission and the check Eng light was on, it shifted fine no problems. Went to parked at work no reverse, checked the oil level it was at the right level. When I left to go home started it up fine went to take off and as soon as I turned the throttle it sputtered and would not move it creeped but no go. cycles the engine on and off a few times same issue. once while it was running i had turned on the fog lights and it stalled, so I disconnected the headlights and restarted the bike and it worked, rode home on the fog lights but I still have a check transmission MSG it shifted fine. My question is will the power requirements of the HID's cause this to happen and is there any thing that can be done other than going back to stock lighting. Is the system that critical of voltage.

There have been cases in the past of folks installing HIDs and having problems shifting and engine faults. The cause was that the HID's are electrically too noisy and interfere with the data on the CANBUS. If you have a good quality brand name HID system, check your wire routing.

I had similar issues with my 2011 after installing HID headlights. Others have reported strange things after installing the HID Lights (Aftermarket). The earlier models seem to have more issues with the HID's. Did you install the Isolaters that pick up power directly from the battery???? Good Luck!

Is this aftermarket or OEM HIDs? OEM, while pricey, are the only way to go. I've had both and battled with aftermarket hids before buying the OEM kit. BIG BIG difference and worth it.

I believe the BRP HID headlights (about $1,500) came with a special ballast that had to be installed with the lights. I had my dealer put them on my 2008 and did not experience any electrical issues. And, boy, those lights were BRIGHT.

I have also heard of issues with aftermarket non-BRP versions. That may be your issue.

Interesting..!!

Hid's have been known to reek havoc. I would backtrack and see if everything goes back to normal. This will tell you if it is in the lighting mods you made. You may need additional equipment or a better system. Our sponsors carry them...

Yep put HID's in last year on my 2012 RS SE5, purchased from Xtreme Digital which I think is a sponsor here. Were extremely difficult to put in. The housing is slightly larger and is a bear to seat. Causes issues with startup, having to push "mode" button twice is most comon. Every once in a while (about every 20 starts), will not shift to first or shift into reverse. Shut down and restarting will reset the computer and your good to go. Is a pain but the HID's are worth it. Your problems are more extreme what brand of HID conversion kit did you purchase?

bought them from DDM Tuning- HID slim ballast 35 w for both the H7 headlights and H8 fog lights and yes they are way brighter drove home on the fog lights only last night after i got it working

I installed my BRP HIDs three weeks ago on a 2012 RSS and my Spyder did the same thing. I drove to the gym and when I came out.. The bike would start but wouldn't shift to 1st or Reverse.

I was about to call a tow truck but then I did the following:

The fix I did was pull my fuses then put them back in , then turn on the bike. The first time I turned the bike on it threw some errors but then I turned the bike off.. waited 2-3 minutes and started it again and I was able to shift.

Since then no more issues.. I think the computer needs to adjust to the BRP HIDs.

I'm not saying this is an official fix but this is what I did. Could have came from a fuse becoming unseated a little during the install. Because I do recall hitting the fuse box when re-inserting the hex screw for the frunk.

Also, check your battery an 09 with an original battery or a low battery may cause issues, since HID's cause an additional strain. Any wired electrical signal can cause havoc with computer. Could be an easy fix if that’s what it is. Charge your battery up to full and see if it will start and shift. If it starts having problems during a ride, check your battery voltage when it starts acting up.

Update

Ok I relocated the ballasts to the outside perimeter frame tubes and things got better, now I occasionally have to pull the clutch fuse when I get the no shift condition at start up, the other issue that I have is when I turned on the fog lights the bike stalls either at idle or while riding. Voltages are above 12.5 with all lights on

Things got 100% better for me when I relocated my aftermarket HID stuff to the garbage. .....just sayin'.

Check the battery to see if it is at full charge. The Magneto generator output is only 500W @ 6,000 rpms. If the voltage gets low you can get all kind of error messages. Disconnect your battery cables, clean your battery cables, reconnect them, and charge the battery. Take it for a ride. if no error, your in good shape.
