Tough decision on trailers etc.

I am like all other American's and having tightness of the old wallet Sydrome!

I am trying to decide which is a better way to go. Buy a trailer to go behind my pick up truck and cart my spyder to Spyderfest and for servicing etc.,and put more luggage etc, in the truck or buy a motorcycle trailer to pull behind my 2012 RTS, so my wife and I can carry more things for longer trips. When we looked at the Spyder, we thought, "Tons of space to store things". In reality it is nice but not big enough for various things like CPAP machines, and other items to keep with you on longer trips.

Ideally- I'd say buy two trailers- as they both serve purposes. Just a lot of money and in this economy probably shouldn't be putting all my eggs into one basket.

I already am adding mods to the Spyder again, just ordered the sway bar--next will be the Bumpskid-but also looking at adjustable air vents, or vented windshield etc.,

So....thought I'd put my thoughts and quandries out here and see what other (Smarter) people have to say on this one.

If anyone knows of a money tree---let me know! :yes:

I think that you can actually get a decent buy on a something like a 7x12 Vee-nose for not a whole lot more than a 622 might cost. It'd be able to be useful in a lot of different applications... :thumbup:

:agree:, but you can save even more money like I did by not buying a trailer at all. When my wife and I go on a long trip I stick my CPAP in the frunk, clothes in the side bags, and the rear space if we buy something. Thus with not that much room we don't buy much, and save a lot of money :yes:

On a serious note, this is a decision you will have to sort out on your own.

You will get so many different answers to the same question based on other peoples opinions.

People will say real bikers don't trailer. The ride there is half the fun. While the ride there is half the fun, I personally don't have the extra time it takes to ride someplace of considerable distance at 55mph on back roads. I do not like to or do I what to cruse down an expressway at 80 mph for 10 to 12 hours on my Spyder. If other people like to do that well more power to them.

I have five days off for Spyderfest. I am not going to be on the road for four of those days. I will have the Spyder in the trailer behind my pickup going down the highway at 75mph and will get there in 10 to 12 hours.

I am looking at a trailer like the Minitrailer USA type being sold by one of our sponsors here. The other trailer is about $1100.00 but could tow the Spyder to get serviced or to Spyderfest etc., allowing us to put suitcases etc., in the truck etc.,

Then again my wife is thinking it would be nice to take the Spyder on road trips and pulls a mini-trailer with it.

That is my delima. I can buy both for what BRP wants to charge for the 622. Cannot justify that type of expense even though it looks nice!

An Aluma 6 by 10 will run about 2K, or less, a small trailer with a car top carrier can be put together for around $500. That's new prices, if you can find 'em used, they're less.
I found a guy that built me a trailer for my Spyder to my specs for 1750. Then used a 20% coupon to get a Harbor Freight Tag a long for just over 300. There's lots of possibilitys, look around.

It all depends on the comfort level you seek for long trips, your goals, and your preferences. I agree that one or the other is a must for extended voyages two-up. 150 miles and one or two nights (without C-Pap) is about all we can tolerate without a trailer. We have both options, but use the Spyder/RT-622 unless we are camping. Then we use the Spyder/Aspen Sentry, unless we are hauling additional bikes to an event. Then we haul a Spyder in the enclosed trailer. Getting 12 mpg doesn't thrill us that way, though. In real bad or questionable weather we usually take the big trailer, too, or if one of us is sick or injured.

Scotty nailed it. Hauling the Spyder behind my truck cuts gas mileage in half. On long trips I'll trailer but it's the same cost for me to ryde and have my wife follow in her car.

We are able to carry enough "stuff" in the RT for a week or so without having to go to a laundry but that doesn't include a CPAP unit. It does include some pretty tight packing but, if possible, I'd rather ride than trailer the RT. We're both in our 70's but, thank the Lord and I realize that we're really fortunate, we can still ride 500 miles in a day and do it in little more time than it would take to do it in our Excursion pulling a trailer. That said, there are times when there's no choice but to haul the Spyder, even if it's just the rare occasion that it may have to be hauled to the dealer.

Thinking of the times when I may need or desire to haul it, I watched the classified ads and wound up buying a very good used 6' x 10' utility trailer with a fold down ramp/tailgate for $600.00 off of Craig's List. There's ample room to load the RT, it's easy to load and tie it down, and it pulls very well behind my Ford Excursion diesel. It does cut the fuel mileage down when I pull the trailer but nowhere near as much as pulling a heavier enclosed trailer which I've done in the past. Of course, the down side is that the RT is exposed to the weather and road grime but no more than it would be if we were riding. The upside is that the utility trailer will also haul a load of firewood, gravel, trash, or three dirt bikes.

For us, the option to buy a trailer to pull behind the RT just isn't that attractive even though it would allow us to carry much more "stuff" on trips. But, everyone's circumstances are different. If I wanted a trailer to pull behind the RT, I'd look long and hard to try to find an RT622 that I could afford. Those trailers are very, very neat.

I'm the odd one here I guess

My wife and I perfer to ride the spyder for long as well as short trips. We have the 622 trailer and wouldn't travel without it on any trip longer than a weekend. Traveling on the Spyder takes no longer than trailering it, I don't think, a few more gas stops don't amount to much time. I think it is simple, if you like to pull it to where you are going that's fine. If you'd rather ride that's fine as well. At this time in my life (talking about age) I am happy riding cross country. Later in life I will ride but I may be pulling :2thumbs:
I do enjoy the 622 trailer, Yep, it's pricey (the spyder is too) I paid 3,999.00 for trailer and hitch. I don't think there is one on the market that is engineered as well or that pulls as well as the BRP trailer. It is engineered and designed for the Spyder, I forget it is behind me (unless backing up:shocked. Good luck with your decision and happy Spydering.
