Top Box Plugs

Ok Ok I give up.
I searched but could not find any reference. :dontknow:

My new 2011 RTS has 2 plugs in the top box.
One on the left for power supply and one on the right for my ipod.

I have a topbox liner from brp which has 2 holes cut out for these plugs to fit thru.

The power plug has a black plastic ring around it and the ipod socket has a shiny ring.

I gather that the idea is to undo these rings put the liner in and put the rings back over the top of the liner to hold it in place.

OK, the question....get to the point.. :gaah:

If I remove these rings will the plugs slip back into the depths of below the trunk never to be seen again...there's probably a stargate in there!!!!
or is there a secondary ring holding everything in place.
I don't really want to be the first to find out and have to pull the whole back end off just to retrieve my plug.

Thanks for any insights :helpsmilie:
Cheers

There should have been instructions with the liner. I can't say for certain, but for the RS front trunk liner, the hole merely allows access. The bezels are not used to hold the liner in place. I doubt it is any different for the rear on the RT. You are right about the guts disappearing into a black hole. As a matter of fact, the bezels usually can't be removed...and if so, only from the back. Trying to remove them from the front will destroy the bezel...and possibly the entire outlet.

Thanks Scotty,
I was afraid that was likely the case.
The liner does not sit very "flush" in the topbox.
It may do so when the pieces are stuck down properly.
The prefitted velcro pieces are only around the edges.
Perhaps I will stick a couple of more pieces of velcro around the holes themselves.
Thanks for your advice

If you remove the "Top" (cover actually), would that allow you to get a paw in behind them to make sure that they stay in place??:dontknow:

Thanks Scotty,

I think I'm chickening out and will just do as detailed previously.

I will be pulling all the tupperware off later when I instal the cb and satnav and all the headsets, so if I remember I'll have a look under the a..end of the cargo unit while it's off.

Looking at the plugs from inside the rrunk again I don't know why I even thought I would need to take them off as there is no room to put a layer of "thin carpet" under the retaining ring.

Thanks for your input.
cheers

Top Case Liner and Shelf Install

I just did this installation a bit over a week ago.

Nancy's Toy is correct. The pre-cut holes for the 12V socket and the iPod jack, respectively, are just there to give access. If you get the alignment just right, the edges of the holes can actually be pressed down around the bezel rings of the two outlets. Don't feel it's "wrong," if you don't achieve this, however. The trunk liner was shipped to me all 'balled up', and I had to do some work to lay it into the trunk and smooth it out before everything started to align. ONLY THEN did I start messing with the adhesive tape.

An interesting thing also happens if you purchase the trunk liner AND the trunk shelf. One of the components they ship you with the shelf is a bracket and strap assembly. This strap and bracket really has nothing to do with the shelf. It appears to be for strapping down "schtuff", or perhaps Can Am's hard luggage that fits down in the bottom of the trunk, to keep it from shaking up and down. Here's the funny thing, as related to the trunk liner: Part of the TRUNK LINER installation is to remove the top and center panel retention screws from the left and right interior sides of the trunk. After the liner is in, you replace the screws through holes pre-cut for them too. Then you find out you have to remove the L/R center screws again to mount the brackets for the retention strap. However, once the liner is in place, there isn't sufficient screw length to pass through the thicknesses of both the strap bracket AND the liner. Therefore, the retention strap lies peacefully awaiting some future use in my junk box. I don't use the top trunk hard luggage, and I've never sensed anything flopping up and down inside it ... so no big loss.

Good news: The liner and the shelf are in and work as well as can be expected. Oh ... one other item on the shelf. The installation instructions show one adhering the shelf to the plastic on the inside of the trunk ... as if to say it doesn't work with the liner. No worries. The adhesive tape is strong enough to adhere to the liner material as well.

Best,
