• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. THE SPYDER LEFT US STRANDED AGAIN

Questions

New member
For the third time since I purchased my new 2012 RT SM5 spyder in 3-22-14, it has left us stranded and had to be towed. It starts up normal, runs for about 2 minutes , dies and will not restart. The first time it did this in my garage at an idle, The second time a few weeks later it stalled in Baraboo, wi, and this past Sunday it stalled in Waupon , Wi. All three times it did the same thing. The first time there was no clear diagnosis, the second time the dealer said it was the ignition relay and not to worry because it probably wouldnt go out again! This time they are scratching their heads trying to figure it out. I filed a complaint with BRP and asked them to call the dealer for tech support. Its a terrible feeling when you cant trust your ride. Anybody have this happen to them?

Have not had it happen, actually hope we never do.

I am not sure if a faulty fuel pump with show a code.

Your post did not mention if it cranks over or not. Mainly stated it was idling and died, either could be electric or fuel. If the dealer already did a starter troubleshoot, might be time to look at the fuel system.

With our 2014 fuel pump getting a bit on the louder side, I am very tempted to replace it with a second pump, plumbed as a spare and wired as a spare also.

Have them check the battery. You say it stalls. Does it just die or sound like its running out of fuel. I suspect it just dies. I'm thinking loose connection. This happened before but I can't locate the thread. I believe it was a loose connection on the rear of the relay panel.

 Getting BRP involved seems like a pretty wise choice...
When your dealer is just, "shooting into the dark"; there's not much chance of them hitting the mark!
Good Luck; please let us know what the outcome is!

Yes it just dies--no warning at all. It happens the same way each time...starts ok, runs ok for about 2 minutes then dies quick no spit or sputter just shuts down. Very dangerous on the streets.

This is a long shot but it could be in key programing mode. Have you or the dealer tried to program a new key recently?

No key has been reprogramed. The last time they said it was ignition relay. As of yesterday they said they had 4 error codes come up. Dealer is supposed to call BRP tech support today. I asked BRP to call dealer "just in case" they dont call.

It's really hard to get that trust back in a machine that has let you down. If they can get a "direct" cause and fix it then ok, maybe. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

As I see it..!!

fuel injection just stops when out of gas doesn't sputter. So it seems to be an electrical or fuel problem. Check all fuses and relays associated. Could be bad gas or fuel/air filter. Electrical can always be fun...kill, ignition switchs and most often cable connections. These are hard to find or duplicate so the more info (lacking codes) you can give the techs the better.....good luck..!! :gaah:

I was rather surprised to discover the fuel pump is actually inside gas tank. Anyone know if that is a common practice on other vehicles?

Really sorry to hear that - frustrating!

I'm sorry you're going through so much "pain" with your Spyder. :banghead: We had a 2012 RT Limited and it ran "great" for it's entire time we had it and traded it in at 7,650 miles for our 2014.

We never had it stall and it was very reliable. :D

I hope they fix it so you can get your trust back into your Spyder. I used to worry about it stranding us somewhere, but now I just ride and enjoy! I hope you get to that point soon!

You may need to

Get a different dealer. The reason I say...you state..."dealer is supposed :yikes: to call BRP...today. .....call dealer "just in case" :yikes: they don't call." IMHO and experience you want a dealer that initiates and immediately places a call to BRP when they have no "fix" ... hope you get this solved sooner rather than later.

There are a lot of possibilities for cause/fix of your situation. The red flags are starting to show up concerning dealer competency. An unreliable :spyder2: is no fun whatsoever.

I sincerely hope you can get the issue(s) solved and that confidence will come back to your ride.

My 2010 spyder has done what you are describing. It has done it a few times.
What I did was open up your fuse panel in the frunk and push all of the fuses and relays back into place. Could be a loose relay or fuse that comes unseated from contact
I changed out the two small vacuum lines located in the top front of the motor the one is very close to the exhaust header and gets very hot.
Since I have changed out the vacuum hoses my spyder runs like new and does not stall.

Also check for corrosion on the battery trminals and also check that the terminals are tight.

At this point, it might be smarter to troubleshoot than guess anymore. Curious if the codes / fault were shared with you, and if they can be posted here.

I spoke with the dealer today and he sent in a help request into BRP TECH Support. He said the buds system is throwing 4 different codes. The ignition switch, fuel pump, hand warmers are all connected into the same circuit. The dealer tech said that the wiring all checked out. He is asking BRP if it is the ECM module. I have had communication with Steve at BRP and he is looking into this problem.

Can you get the dealer to write down the codes for you? There are lots of people here who can tell you what they mean.
Have you tried swapping relays, if they have the same ID numbers, they are interchangable, and depending on the circuit, may not use the same contacts.
If your engine has been running a little hotter than normal, or the codes show a lean condition, it could be cracked vacuum lines.
