There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Talk about bad dealer PDI service.....

My friend Dave at Custom Dynamics finally got his new 09 Phantom SM5 Spyder dropped off yesterday.

He bought it as a new leftover online from a dealer in KS.

Well, so far the things they DID NOT EVEN SET UP ON THE PDI are really scarey. :yikes:

He went out for his first ride last night, and of course his bike overheated went right into LIMP MODE! :yikes::yikes:

He Limped it back home, called me, and we started looking for the cause.

Turns out the cooling fan was NOT EVEN PLUGGED IN! :yikes::yikes::yikes:

He also told me that his air temp gauge was reading 125 degrees too. :dontknow:

Well it's hot in NC this time of year, but not 125 for sure, Again the dealer did not put the air temp sensor in place and it was right near the engine reading that heated air.

So, then after finding these two things, we started going over the machine.

We then found THERE WAS NOT ONE DROP OF COOLANT IN THE OVER FLOW TANK! :yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:

He did not have a boil over on his ride, so it is not that he lost it when in limp mode.

He then checked the air pressure in the tires and found it was way low and not set on all 3 tires. :(

I then had him check the drive belt, and it was as tight as a drum! Which is a no brainer that it was not reset to the new spec before the dealer shipped it ether. :(:(

This dealer supposedly is one of the biggest dealers in the Mid West, or so they told him? :dontknow:

If this is the kind of PDI service they do, I do not know how they stay in business? :dontknow:

My real thought is, they knew they would never have to see this machine again, or deal face to face with Dave. They just put a battery in it and shipped it without doing the PDI. :yikes:

If dealers continue to deliver bikes like this, it's not hard to understand why some of these guys are going out of business. :agree:

Today we'll go over over the bike some more, I hope the rest is OK?

Go to your dealer and ask them to connect-it to B.U.D.S.:
-check for old/existing errors
-apply at least Update#1
-apply 2010 BRP Bulletins
Then, send the KS dealer the bill. nojoke

I think you actually hit the nail on the head with this one. It is also another very unfortunate reason that it is really buyer beware when attempting to buy a vehicle on EBay. It goes back to the old saying about one bad apple.

The good news is he has a knowledgeable friend in you and was able to get help sorting all of this out. Most others do not have this luxury and would really be in a bind. Not to mention how negative their perception of the entire Spyder experience would become.

For those without a friend like you close by, Doc's advice below may be worth a shot:

:agree: Very good idea Doc.

Good idea, But i'll bet when the KS dealer gets the bill he'll just use it to wipe the windsheld on his car,!

Tell Dave, or have him read it here, call me when he gets back to NC and we can take it down to Goldsboro, a pretty good hike for him from Wake Forest but I can introduce him to the owner and the shop manager. Would be good networking for CD.
There is only one other dealer in the area and I don't trust those guys to check my tires. One tech there and he is clueless..example..had some work done and they gave me extra screws back in a bag telling they were not sure where they came from....umm..you didnt take anything off, where did they come from. That was a year ago and they are not from my bike.
Perfomance East, they will set it all right regardless if the other dealer screwed it up.
My concern would be, if they didn't do it right the first time, what makes you think they will do it correctly the second time. I think Dave is trailing it back, the last time I talked to Matt, that was the plan. I am waiting for him to get back so I can hook up with him to get some pics done with the lights.

All the more reason to BUY LOCAL. nojoke
I live in KS...LOL. I have pretty much decided that support for this bike is all but non existent as far as dealers go. I just keep riding, check what I can, make sure things are done that I can do. When I have a probelm I cannot take care of myself then Ill drop trou and work the warranty etc. I actually bought mine in KC but on the MO side. My dealer experience was less than sat for sure and my phantom was not setup properly either although not as bad as they are describing.

Another reason to make sure you are buying from a good dealer who takes care of thier customers. It is good to hear about dealers who are not up to standard--as we can be warned in advance--but we should also hear about the dealers that are very good with customers. Here is a good dealer. Team CC in Wasilla and Eagle River AK. If your in AK and need service--this is the one to go to.

As long as BRP allows their dealers to pull stunts like this, their sale will continue to suffer. A limp mode for a brand new rider on its maiden voyage will leave a very bad taste in their mouth for a good long time. Crap like this needs to be avoided at all cost and appearently BRP isn't doing enough to weed out lousy dealers like this one in KC. Another example of lack of customer services.:gaah:

Wow, Sorry to hear about all of the issues. Although mine was set-up right, including the first update before I took it home, I still gave her a once over, mainly to see how to strip her down...LOL

:agree:

And with all the ads they have running now--- they really should be prepared better for increased sales volumes. I now have people tell me all the time they saw an ad for my Spyder on TV.

I just wouldn't even consider buying an item like the Spyder without being face-to-face with the dealer. Gotta have a live person you can go beat on in case of such problems......:D;).

When I was in the Black Hills the other day, I stopped at Rice Honda and Suzuki, there in Rapid City. I pulled up in front of the dealership on my spyder, and seen they had two RS's and one RT on display, right outside their door. I looked over the RT and the trailer for approx 10 mins and the RS's with the BRP hard bags, floor boards, foot extensions, touring windshield, etc, for at least another 10 mins. Went inside, and looked at their blue RS and the new RT in the showroom, plus all of their accessories on display, approx another 10mins. Long story short.....walked out ......without even being approched by one salesman, manager, tech, ....NOBODY...:gaah:
There were also four young men looking at the blue RS, and one was considering buying one for his wife, and they had not been spoken to, when they left.
Now, I don't know anything about this dealer, as far as service goes, but I'll tell you.......I was not impressed. :chill:
If they opperate like this all the time..........BRP should look at someone else to handle their products. There is only one other dealer in the state of SD, so you really don't have too much of a choice, but being located there in the Black Hills, ....they should have one of the top dealerships in the country, in my way of thinking. :dontknow:

I am sure BRP is no happier with this kind of service than the customer. It is their product that looks like junk because the dealer didn't care enough to prep it correctly.

Surely BRP works with dealers and even pulls their product if the situation warrants it. Still, some machines will go out like this and it is a real shame. If the dealership had to make good on this by paying for the setup that they should have done it might go a long way towards resloving future issues.

I wonder what would have happened if the engine seized. Would BRP cover it under warranty, would the shipping dealership take the hit for not setting it up correctly or would the customer end up holding the bag?

BRP doesn't know this is going on...they don't have eyes at every dealer, all during the day.

When they read a thread like this, they'll get on it...

Over many years of riding many types of motor vehicles with 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 and 18 wheels I have learned that the biggest dealers usually are not the best. Usually "the biggest" means get 'em in and out as quickly as possible or "profit, profit, profit". As with any rule there is always a 10 % exception to the rule. "My dealer or politician is not the problem they are the exception, it's your rep that is the problem." It's bad that a manufacturers entire line of products suffers the consequences of a bad dealer or service center. /Ken krb1945
