• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Stranded in Orlando

On a trip - started as a nice way to reconnect with some old friends. Then... the bike stopped running. The starter turns the motor over but there’s either no spark or no fuel. And of course it’s Sunday, so my options are few.

Does anyone have any easy things to try (limited tools), or a great dealer near Wildwood, FL?

Long story short - I left Orlando at 6 PM Eastern and rode straight until 1:15 AM Central, about 475 miles. I filled up with gas 4 times but
never shut off the motor
. Everything ran like a top.
This morning I tried to move the byke from the driveway to the garage and
:yikes:
it wouldn't start!

Please note, the OP has GONE HOME and is no longer near the location of the original failure! While I appreciate your desire to help, pointing to dealers that are nowhere nearby anymore is NOT HELPFUL! :banghead::banghead:

Newbie questions

Try the WOT *Wide Open Throttle)
Ignition ON
Twist and hold throttle Wide Open
Crank Engine
Release Throttle
Try restarting without opening throttle.

What does the WOT do? Does that clear something internally?

Also Easy Rider suggested (couldn't figure out how to quote two folks)
"You should be able to eliminate that delay by pushing the mode button once.
Key ON.
Push brake.
Hit mode once.
Start."

Does that just clear the splash screen quicker when you first start the start up process?

Just one more question...are these only troubleshooting steps applicable only to the RTs, or if there were a problem would it work on any Spyder?

Please be patient with my newbie questions. I just got my '17 F3T (first Spyder) June 16 and Angry Bug has quickly become my daily driver. I was raised helping dad in the garage and can usually limp myself home on four wheels if/when needed. With that upbringing, I totally believe that if I'm gonna ride alone (husband is truck driver and gone all week) I need to know how to troubleshoot and/or remedy random issues that may pop up when I am away from home.

Yes I think so.
On my older (998 engine) RT, I think it forced you to wait for the initial screen to time out or push the mode button before it would start.
I think the new ones don't do that and the mode button may not be any real advantage anymore.

Edit: Just tested and the '17 still needs the mode button hit if you want to speed things up.

What does Wide Open Throttle do?

This might be a good time to talk about this.

WOT while cranking:

Although less frequently than on a carbureted motor, an electronically fuel injected motor can get flooded. This simply means that most or all of the spark plug electrodes and insulators have been coated with excessive liquid fuel, such that the spark voltage just gets shorted to ground rather than create a spark in the gap. Typically a leaky or sticking fuel injector causes this. So, ever since Bosch invented the thing, they incorporated a flooded engine mode into the ECU. Going to full throttle BEFORE you hit the start button and begin cranking tells the ECU to fully open the butterfly valves in the throttle bodies, but not to add any fuel...or in some applications, only a tiny amount. Technique is the key here. Go through your normal prestart items, twist the grip to full throttle, hold it there, THEN hit the start button and crank for about 10 seconds. The idea is to dry off the plugs to allow a spark. After that, attempt a normal start.

Another item to note - very early on Monday morning, the OP was able to pull up a crankshaft position sensor error active code. Since we don’t have distributors anymore, it is this sensor that tells the ECU the ROTATIONAL position of the crankshaft so that it knows when to fire the plugs and set ignition timing. A flaky CPS could be the entire cause of his fail to start issues. As important as the CPS and CAPS is, to me there should be two redundant sensors. But since we can’t fall out of the sky when the engine quits, I guess they just give us one.

It was a long stressful day but he made it home safely. :2thumbs:

Storing all these nuggets in the back of my head in case I ever have issues when I'm out alone (or so I can dazzle hubs if I have issues when we are out together) ;)
