I wonder - We all know motorcycles are Dangerous. (So are Cars) But I wonder if the statistics for the Can-am's (per capta) are better or worse.
Their more visable - Than a bike, etc. etc. Would be nice to know.

I wonder. Are most bike accidents due to "driving stupid" ? Or are they dut to the "stupid" car drivers - not seeing them ?
Plus, I want to do both. Have fun, and live longer.

But have seen & heard of Spyder accidents that survived what two wheels would not have.
But as we all know its not what you call safe.

Considering the close calls I've had just this summer, if I do have an accident, it'll most likely NOT be caused by me. Despite my being on a bright red Spyder with headlights always on, despite my never touching a freeway, despite my sticking to rural roads, never driving at night and rarely going faster than 50, today's drivers with their damned cell phones and whatever else their pea brains are focused on are prone to turning in front of me, right at me, drifting into my lane from the opposite direction, passing me at 80+ on a gravel road, and just plain acting like I'm invisible. :gaah:

Statistics for MCs are available. Something like 40-45% of MC accidents are left turners cutting off the bike. 35-40% are single vehicle accidents, and 3% are rear ended. The rest are a variety of misc accidents. (from memory)

I suspect the Spyder fares a bit better due to more mature riders, larger size and better able to be seen.

I am pretty lite up for lights and drivers still try and kill me.

Statistics compiled by Idaho show a different picture. A study of fatal accidents shows that 67% of fatalities are caused by rider error. Only 21% were caused by cars violating the m/c riders' right of way. What's really telling though, is rider training results in about an 89% reduction in fatalities. 40% of fatalities were riders over 40, and 75% were on cruisers or touring bikes. The last two groups include a big share of Spyder riders so from that aspect fatalities while riding a Spyder may not be much lower than for 2 wheelers.

The data in the links is from 2009 to 2013. Auto accidents caused by distracted driving are going up, so the percentage of fatalities caused by cars violating riders' right of way may very well be creeping up also.

Yeah, my numbers come from the Hurt report, which is, admittedly, dated. More recent national data seems to agree with it, but local and state data will vary wildly depending on urban density.

When I got my first bike 30 years ago, the guy that taught me to ride told me that every car out there was trying to kill me.....keep that in mind. He said if you can not see the drivers eyes, he can't see you....I have always held to those rules. It is kind of funny, we drove the truck to our daughters for Thanksgiving, and my wife says that I drive the Spyder so much better than the truck.

That's essentially what my parents drilled into me when they taught me how to drive a car half a century ago. They said to always assume that every driver on the road except me was an idiot. It was tongue-in-cheek back then ... little did they know how accurate they would eventually be.

Here's the problem .... the only really accurate info ( like what you want to know ) are known by insurance companies .... They don't share :gaah:this !!!! .... Mtc's are rarely broken down into 2 wheel vs. 3 wheel !!! ..... But if you attempt to insure say a Hayabusa vs a Spyder RT ( with all things being equal ).....I'm pretty sure you will get a better rate on the Spyder .... Why ?, I'm guessing the Ins. Co. is figuring insuring the Spyder is LESS likely to cost them a bunch of MONEY $$$$$$ ............jmho...... Mike :thumbup:

Don't drive
Don't climb ladders
Don't walk up or down the stairs
Don't go out into the sunlight
Don't eat fatty foods
Exercise regularly: but not too much!

I have not seen separate statistics regarding :spyder2: vs. two wheel safety. As Mike said, the insurance companies have the information, but don't seem to be sharing it.

Statistics are just a bunch of numbers showing past history. Does not guarantee that your particular machine will be one of the lucky ones or not. Interesting to look at and ponder, but I would not buy an item based on a statistic--good or bad.

From a practical point of view, I would say the :spyder:is a bit more safe than two wheels. It has many safety features that are not on every motorcycle. An advantage, but not a guarantee--IMO.
