There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Spyder update BRP Rep worked on it today...

First off... sorry if this sounds downbeat but I promised I would post updates so...BRP's Rep came down to Ocala and worked on my spyder all day today. He was very nice and answered all my questions the best he could (because they just don't have answers to all of them). Anyway they replaced the dps, the angle position sensor, the computer, and several other components of which I have no idea what they are or where they go. He said basically they were replacing everything involved. He said they could not get it to work. They worked on it all day and consulted engineers at brp too. They decided the dps they just installed was bad. I asked if it was possibly the computer. He told me they had installed two different computers in it today to try and make it work. It still doesn't work, however, now it is throwing a dps code.

So now he is leaving to go back up north, they have ordered another dps part, and I am now awaiting the new dps to come from Canada and be installed by my dealer. Then we will see what happens. At first they were going to replace everything and reset it and then turn it back over to me...I must say I am not happy with the idea that I could have ridden it home today and had a repeat of my incident. I do hope they figure out what is causing these problems. Anyway I am downhearted about it, but I don't want it back until it is fixed and fixed right. I will keep posting updates. Ya'll ride safe.. and please post on your updates as well so we can all be informed. I don't know about anyone else but most of my information comes from you guys, and I really appreciate it.

:gaah:

Thanks for keeping us posted..... hope BRP comes up with fixes for fires, steering, surges, etc. When I ride, all these are thoughts in my mind.

Here is an old post I remember reading awhile back. It makes me wonder if this might have something to do with all the steering issues? Can somone with more knowledge (Scotty?) please comment? Hopefully BRP has checked into this issue as a possible cause.

"On the very bottom of your frame rail, you will see a square aluminum box with a bunch of hard brake lines coming out of it. That's your VCM. There is a big black connector on the left side of the box. It has a lever on the top. Pull the lever down, until it pops the connector out. Look for green corrosion on the connctor's 4 big pins, and matching pins for VCM.

I've included some pics, that I sent to BRP. I replaced the VCM, which pays something like 2hrs, and the main wiring harness. There is no job code for this, so....I called BRP and got them to approve 5hrs of additional labor. Trust me you do not want to attemp this. Please if you see corrosion, take it to a dealer. Every piece of plastic has to come off, and all of the connectors in the back go thru the frame rail. NOT FUN!!!"

Thanks for the update. Please keep us posted ! Hope all works out and you can ride with confidence again.:popcorn:

What bothers me most about your post is they took a replace it all aproach. If it had have been fixed they wouldn't know what fixed it.
Maybe they did try to fix it with a bad DPS, hopefully another DPS will fix it, but a second bad DPS speaks volumes. I once had a Mustang Convertible with about 3K miles, that had a check engine light come on. They had the local tech work on it for over a month with no luck. Had a Ford engineer come in, and he and the tech worked on it for an addfitional 2 days. Apparently there is more than one computer in this car and they replaced them all and some other components. Then everything was fine.
On the ticket it said neither engineer nor tech could explain what was wrong.

Well not to confuse anyone because I was not there while they were working on it. I was told they replaced all of these things, however, I don't know if they replaced them one component at a time to see if that was the problem or what order they were replaced in. However, I do have some mechanical know-how since my dad was a mechanic and taught me a lot.. and every question I asked was answered with "we did that already" and it still didn't work. I also asked a lot of questions that are being asked here in the forum to see if they could answer them, but they are not sure what is going on either. We will just have to let them do their jobs and figure it all out.

I think they should just give me a new RT and keep mine LOL. :roflblack:

I applaud you for your unemotional report. I'm sure you are horribly disappointed. No doubt they are, too. It would have been nice to find a firm cause and a straight-forward cure. The important thing is that they are still trying and that you should have a safe Spyder when this is finished. Lot's of possibility in Rando's post about the main VCM connector, and there is also the past issue of a bad GPS making noise on the CANBUS system. If all else fails, they should look at these less likely possibilities. Keep the updates coming. They are helpful (but not necessarily comforting) to us all.

Bummer! He's up north to do mine tomorrow - I won't be there, I have to work but I'll let you know if I hear anything. Hearing this from you worries me. Keep us posted on the new DPS that will be installed.

I am very concerned that if and when they fix the "problem" Spyders, what will prevent them from having the same problems down the line? Many of the affected Spyders rode fine for thousands of miles, then suddenly all these steering issues. Whatever component (s) is (are) causing the malfunctions might again go bad at anytime and endanger the riders life.

The NHTSA made BRP issue a recall because of steering problems. BRP configured software updates to deal with the problems. Now it seems BRP is admitting that they don't know what is causing the issues. So what purpose did the recall and software updates actually have? Seems to me that the recall was just to get the NHTSA off their back. The danger caused by erratic steering is still there. The government should mandate that all Spyders be taken off our roadways until the REAL problem is corrected. In states that cover the Spyder under the Lemon Law, owners who had their bike at the dealers for three or more times without getting a proper repair should seek a refund or a new vehicle. No one on this forum who experienced the steering malfunction should ever be accused of "nit picking". this is a serious matter not to be taken lightly !!!!!!!!

:agree:I'll be willing to take a refund :gaah:

I agree with the first paragraph. THese "problem spyders" are just getting replacement parts and they will say it is fixed. It is not fixed as they are the same exact part just new, with the possiblity of the same thing happening down the road. I love riding the spyder as it has given me the opportunity to experience something I would never of been able to without it. I never thought I would say this but I'm begining to think I too wouldn't mind a refund. I have NEVER had any issue with my spyder, but this is too serious an issue to fool around with. Man I hope they find the issue by spring :dontknow:

Glad I got the Lemon Law in CT! If this keeps happening that is what I will end up doing. I hope they can fix it though.

Thank you for recommending the government take MY Spyder off the road. After all, I am not a free adult that can make rational risk/reward decisions, and I need the government to decide it for me. The paranoia around here, and the "solutions" being proposed are scary.

We are all bummed about the problems we are having but I agree, I don't want the gov't telling me what to do either. I can't post anymore about it cuz I'll get thrown off the forums.

Since BRP doesn't have the business sense to make that decision by themselves, the NHTSA would have to do it for them. Sure keep on riding the dangerous POS. Your safety doesn't seem to be of any concern to you, but maybe there are others on the road who value their life more than you do. Maybe the poor soul who gets into a head on collision with someones Spyder might be one of them !!
