I first found and then used UShip in 2006. I asked a few folks I knew who used UShip for transporting agricultural equipment about it and went to the website, UShip.com, and read up on how it worked. In summary, you put down the specifics of the item you want shipped, i.e., your Spyder, fill in the time frame, etc., and any special conditions or issues and list it. In all three times within a day or less, you'll have potential shippers bidding on picking up and delivering what you agreed to have them ship. In the case of the Spyder, I wanted it picked up early in a particular week and delivered on or before the Friday of that same week. I required that the shipper have a trailer or flat bed w/ramps as I don't have access to a loading dock. You can put in whatever requirements or restrictions you want. The more you screw things down, the fewer bidders and the higher the price will likely be. I had 10 bidders. Some wanted to talk. I didn't talk to anyone. I wanted them to commit to a price. As I read through them, I discovered that some couldn't meet my pickup and/or delivery dates. Some were incredibly high. And so forth. The bidders who could meet all of my requirements ranged in price from $250 to over $1K. I chose a guy at $300. I talked to him on the phone, recieved confirmation that he was property licensed, bonded and/or adequately insured. The money doesn't change hands until you are satisfied that your shipment is correct, in its original condition and you are totally satisfied. When you agree to accept the bid, there is a percentage paid, sort of like a downpayment. I think it was 10% but not sure.
As I said, this type of transport isn't for everyone. But, I've got neighbors who have used UShip to transport combines, tractors, a Corvette, etc., and I've used it for my 4 wheeler, compact utility tractor and my Spyder. All was well with each shipment, each different shippers. All delivered with a few hours of the agreed time. One was within 15 minutes. All kept me informed via phone where they were and how things were going. I was always comfortable with the whole process. UShip.com - check it out.
