Spyder Oil Change Schedule

My 2011 Spyder manual says oil change every 3000 miles. I do 3000 miles in 2 months. The cost of oil changes is killing me. My friends 2017 says every 9000 miles. I know they are different engines BUT a 6000 mile difference, does that make any sense? My original plan when I got this a year ago was to change oil myself as I used to on my 2 wheeler but this is so different, I can't even get past the remove mirror part, looked at videos but no luck afraid of breaking it. So its costing a lot to keep changing at this mileage. Input Please

I'm using Valvoline 10w40 full synthetic motorcycle oil, less than$7.00 a quart at wallyworld. changing at 5,000 mile intervals. I put downward pressure on the end of the mirror, bop it rearward and then upward.

Once you get past the first change each one is easier

We put 76,000 miles on our 11 RT SM-5 and probably did 12 changes myself. Have another Spyder Ryder demonstrate the mirrors, or get someone to put on the mirror magnets if you wish. The good thing about the manual tranny is you only have one filter to change. Get your filters from BajaRon and oil kits from Ron or wherever. We ran the XPS oil for the changes, but as long as it is Jaso MA-2 certified, you should be good. Take your time, newspapers and some ramps help and each change will be easier and save you another $100. The Oil change videos are a must, and a little to less torque is better than too much. Remember, the filter cap screws are in INCH LBS! Good Luck!

Locomotion, I have a '13 and agree, I was putting 3k in two months last year. But others on this forum made me aware of the 4,600 mile interval and I did get the Magic Mirror magnet mounts to make taking the mirrors off and on easier. I've done the Castrol 4T full synthetic and have stretched my changes to 6K+ and ran oil tests showing the oil was still in good shape.

3,000 miles is certainly overkill. I don't recommend going beyond 4,500 miles with the BRP blended oil as testing shows it starts to break down pretty fast at about this mileage. I've run Amsoil to 6,400 miles and the test data came back as still well within spec.

Whatever you use be sure it is JASO M2 rated (wet clutch friction spec) and has NO friction modifiers in it.

Having your oil tested will give you a very accurate read on when you need to service your Spyder.

Thanks for the input. Tried your mirror suggestion, did not come off but the forward edge is loose. Did I break something? Cannot get it back tight.

Thanks for the reply. Where does one get Magic Mirror mounts? Do dealers install them? I tried again to take one off and its now loose at the front end.

dunno, seems they never go back on tight. left hand mirror, hold down on the end of the mirror with your right hand, hit the front of the housing and then hit up on the bottom. should come off. then lift the mirror off of the upper pin. got to hit them pretty hard with the palm of your hand.

The 2014's and up (1330 x 3) have a first oil change at 3,000 miles. Then, every 9,300 miles OR once a year.

The 2008 - 2013 (998 x 2) have a first oil change at 600 miles and then every 4,500 miles.

Simple and straight forward. Just the way I like it!

I was just like you could not get the mirror off watched you tube videos and went and tried came off easy the way it worked for me was to stand in front of the mirror close to the frunk with your left hand pull the mirror towards you just slightly so you left hand should cross over your body and be pulling on the very tip of the mirror then use your right hand palm to smack it on the under part of the mirror to get it off this would be for the left mirror on the right mirror use your right hand to pull towards you and the left to hit it on the under side. Once you have done it it is real easy, I find it harder to put back on than take off.

OK so I tried this. Mirror did not come off but the front edge is back tight, so I am happy about that. One more question, when you smack under the mirror is it close to the outer edge or real close to the body as shown in the videos I have seen?

This video has a very good example of how to remove and reinstall the mirrors on a Spyder. Kind of daunting the first time but really easy after doing it a time or two.

Which video is that?

I got mine off by a rotation motion pulling upwards and back using the upper mount as a rotation axis/point. Check if the clips are in the right place before putting them back on. Not a fan of the beating and banging.

You are going by the old 998 v twin schedule. The new schedule is every 4600mi (7500Km). According to BRP this increase is due to the newer high capacity oil filters. The new maintenance schedule applies to all Spyders 2008-2012. You can get this book ordering part #219000669 if you don't have one with your Spyder. I was lucky enough to have a previous owner who kept everything together.

How and where does one get their oil tested? I have never heard of that.
