Spyder Engine Replaced - Thx Carlo, BRP, APS

Follow-up to my Engine Gone post of Aug 11...

After 1 month, got the Spyder back from my dealer today. Although I did much hollering and complaining at first :roflblack: , which seemed to be necessary to get the attention of both dealer and BRP, with help from Carlo at BRP and the guys at American Power Sports I got my Spyder back today with a new engine. Once I got everyone talking :chat: , things went rather well.

The initial diagnosis was that the main bearings were gone. I had no oil pressure and there were metal shavings in the oil.

So BRP sent out a new engine; the old one gets shipped back to BRP for further diagnosis.

My wife was ready to divorce me after only a few weeks of this ordeal. I get really grumpy without my Spyder to ride. Back to happy now and I'll spend the next few days getting 600 miles on the new engine.

Since my problem, I've seen 2 other posts on the boards of folks with similar problems -- and even fewer miles. I sure hope BRP figures this out before they start shipping the RT's.

So thanks again to Carlo and APS for getting me back on the road. One month ain't so bad now that its over...

And I'm absolutely positive I'll be buying the extended warranty!

A couple of things . . . .

How hard was it to get everyone talking? Any tips you can give the rest of us?

Yes, I too have see the other 2 posts and they sound a lot like your experience, did BRP or the Dealer indicate that they would get back to you on what happened? I am guessing, "Not", since you are now whole again and the old engine is not yours.

Glad Carlo and your dealer got you back on the road, but probably not as much as your wife is. :D

Wow! After all the things I have heard about the Rotax V990 being a 'bulletproof' engine, this is all a bit strange, isn't it? I guess things do happen.

Maybe

Maybe it was a friday 5pm engine if you know what i mean. Hope everything is ok for you now. :chat:

I am curious if you had any or multiple overheating issues before your engine went south.

I was always taught whenever temp hits red shut off engine/vehicle immediately-as soon as possible. The Spyder goes to limp mode when it overheats and lets one continue to ride - maybe this is not a good thing and we should just immediately shut it down.

Three possible scenarios:
1) a run of inferior quality parts.
2) BRP oil is breaking down, assuning all 3-4 engines were running this brand.
3) The Rotex 60cubic inch engine can't handle the 700lb bike with riders to much strain.
From everything I have read on the Rotex V990 it is pretty close to bullet proof. Hopefully BRP will diagnose the problem and let us know. I would prefer just some substandard parts got manufactured on a few motors, and it is a small isolated occurance

Tom,
How I got them all talking was by e-mailing to Spyder tech support and to my dealer, expressing my perception that they each were waiting for the other to act. I also sent an e-mail to the CEO of BRP.

The dealer is shipping the engine back to BRP. They hope to hear something and will let me know.

BeRight - never any indication of overheating prior to the engine going out. In fact, I had recently come back from a cross-country run during which Spyder performed flawlessly, even while doing 500-600 mile days in 100 plus heat.

Bulldogger, I suspect it was a small run of substandard bearings. If it was the BRP oil, I would have had trouble sooner and many others would be having trouble also. While my ride has 21000 when it went down, the others I've heard of had 5000-7500 miles.

All -- the spyder has never been so quiet or felt so smooth as it does now. I put over 200 miles on it today working on breaking the engine in.

The scoop on these bearings I have is Fafiner built a plant in CHINA and Rotax used to use Fafiner bearings made in Germany now they are getting them again from Fafiner in U.S.A and Germany again since there having alot of premature problems:ani29::gaah:oh ya glad you have your ride back
