Spyder DPS Poll

How's your DPS treating you?

Well it might be needed still, you seemed to have left out the option.....

-had Spyder repaired, unsure that it is really fixed

....otherwise, you're just slanting the poll with the answers that you carefully chose........

Not very scientific at all, if all the options haven't been presented....

What? Does that mean it has been fixed and not ridden? Or fix and ridden but it is not acting up, but could act up in the future? If it was fixed and not acting up then I would call that fixed!

Mines OK Right now but What if I have a problem and the person doesn,t give me a Sworn Statement under oath that it is indeed fixed???:hun:
How can I believe them?
How can I trust BRP?
What if it isn,t fixed?
I just don,t know what to do anymore??
When I sit on it and start to turn the key I,m afraid to death its going to burst into flames because there was 1 NFSTA report of that.
And how do I know when I,m flying down the highway that the rear wheel isn,t going to fall oFFF??:hun:

Just pulling your chains :roflblack:SEE BRP History below!:joke::roflblack:

DPS Poll

How does a person know if their spyder is actually "fixed" when they get it back from the dealer? Is it fixed if the mechanic (sorry,I meant "Tech.") says it's fixed? Is it fixed if you ride it 50mi. and the problem doesn't recur? How about 500mi.?,5000mi.? The point I'm trying to make is that some people may not ride their Spyder 500mi. in a year and consider it to have been fixed when there are those that ride 500 or more miles in a weekend and have the problem recur in a few weeks. I got 8500mi. on mine before the problem started, should I expect to get another 8500mi. before it happens again? The only way I will consider mine "fixed" is when someone can physically show me what the problem was, explain what was causing the problem or I don't have the same problem again for as long as I own it no matter how high the mileage gets.

There is no way to ever guarantee you are not going to have a problem with a piece of machinery, especially for an unlimited amount of miles. That is why you get a warranty when you purchase something, it is to fix what may go wrong. There is a very good reason automobile manufacturers do not give out unlimited mile bumper to bumper warranties. You should also know that most components in a normal desktop computer have an average life expectancy of 3 years. One would hope the components used for our vehicles would be much better than that, but again there are no guarantees. Look at DocDoru, he has well over 65,000 miles on his, has had his steering fixed a few times, and still rydes it like he stole it. As with anything else, your mileage may vary.

Perhaps there is a chance that in certain situations the magnets do receive interference from the electronics and begin fighting against each other. That might explain the locking feeling and why it takes extra force to break that magnetic field in order to turn. However, that is purely speculation on my part as well. :dontknow:

Why is there such a huge difference between the number of spyderlovers who read this thread and the number of owners who participated in poll.

If you own a Spyder, please participate in the poll. This is very valuable to all of us.

?

Went in a month ago to do the update.

Had a day off, wouldn't get another chance, so I drove it 30 miles in a snowstorm.

"We have a problem" they said, and ordered a DPS unit and sent me on my way, back home in the snowstorm, throwing codes the whole way. No limp mode, though.

Emailed Carlo that day who called my dealer, and also called me and left a message.

I emailed dealer just yesterday to ask if there was word on the part delivery from four weeks ago.

Found a message on my answering machine today:

"We have the part" they said, "we were just waiting for better weather."

:roflblack:

(I guess they mean, better weather to take a test ride once they finish the install!)

That's where I am at. :dontknow:

Maybe they have one of those new, open-air shops. :roflblack: I hear they are much cheaper to build with just a workbench under a canopy.

I've been thinking along the same lines....is the torque sensor getting confused for some reason?
Lets say you're initiating a turn and the torque sensor for whatever reason sends a signal for power assist in the opposite direction? could you actually be fighting against the power steering motor until more force is applied? Just another theory.....:dontknow:

Certainly each person will have a different idea of when they consider their DPS problem 'fixed'. The big problem here is that in many cases it is an intermittent problem... and also one that my not show up for thousands of miles.

Mine personally didn't happen until around 5,000 miles and then was sporadic, but would easily happen at least once during a short ride of 50 miles.

For me, I consider it fixed if I ride it and it no longer does it. Guess that's just me being optimistic about it... but there's just no way to know without RIDING IT. For me it really is as simple as that. Right now it's fixed because it's working great. Will it happen again sometime?? Maybe--- only one way to find out. No machine or part ever made will operate perfectly forever.. it's insane to expect that.

So as some have said, yes-- many of us may 'assume' it is fixed... but as long as it operates okay we won't know the difference...;).

There was no way to list every single category that people would fall into for this poll - so I kept it simple and fully understand if some may not vote yet because they are not sure what group the fall into.

Other possible groups not listed :

1. DPS repaired, but still too early to tell if the owner considers it 'fixed'.
2. Have not had Spyder long enough to make the correct choice.
3. What's a DPS??? ;)

And some wanted:

4. Dealer and/or special tech repaired it, but didn't specify if it was fixed or not, so we won't ride it and therefore cannot vote 'fixed or not'. Spyder is currently in DPS purgatory.

For me, option #4 would best fit into "My Spyder HAS DPS problems and they are NOT fixed". If a person is afraid to ride it --- then they don't believe it's really fixed. Not sure what BRP can do to assure people in that situation. Doubt a statement or piece of paper would be very reassuring at this point.:dontknow:

For me---- I'm riding.. and if it acts up I'll take it in... simple as that.

I don't get it either. Just looking for some honest input. If people have had problems and don't feel their bike is really fixed--- then they should vote NOT FIXED.

The numbers won't be exact by any means as there are many variables;

Some may not have enough miles yet to determine a problem.
Some may have voted 'not fixed' even though they no longer own the Spyder.
Some may have voted 'not fixed' even though they are riding and the problem no longer persists.
Some won't vote because they really are not sure if they feel their Spyder is fixed.

All of the above (and more I'm sure) are reasons some have not voted--- and each person has their own personal reasons. Most of this will even out in the end anyway... usually does with polls and data-- just the nature of the beast.

I do wish more would vote.. but understand those who are not sure.
Some don't feel they fit into the listed categories.

Also--- this isn't meant to be a 'competition' to 'prove' things one way or the other!

We know the majority of Spyders have NOT had the problem-- that should not be a big shock. What we want to find out is if there are any patterns to this... and how well the current set of 'fixes' has been working.

I haven't voted for two reasons. Nancy's Spyder had the recall and the update done, but I have not been able to ride it yet to be sure if there is no problem, so I don't know where it stands. Also, it has had steering anomolies, but I don't think they are DPS issues, as you specified...and the recall may have addressed them. I could vote for my RTS, but I have too few miles to feel valid, and I can't vote two times. Sorry, maybe in time.

Fully understand--- and you would be correct in abstaining (from voting that is--;)).

so..

After over a day of polling. we have a little 60% that have had no problem.
Nearly 40% that have had a DPS incident/issue
and nearly a quarter of them are not considered fixed.

:thumbup::roflblack:
 , :chill: ,:p

Yeah--- interesting to say the least.

Out of 128 total votes right now:

79 never had DPS problems

49 have had DPS problems, of which 32 consider them 'fixed' (meaning the problem no longer persists).

Only 6 of those with DPS problems were 2009.

Sure seems 2008 is the year to watch out for!

Obviously the number of 'never had DPS problems' would skyrocket if everyone out here voted....that is to be expected.... but its those that HAVE experience the DPS problems that is most interesting.
