Spark plug change at the dealer

So, I looked at and read the little info I could find on doing the spark plug/wires change.....I must admit, I might not have the patience for this one. Has anyone had the spark plugs/wires changed at a dealer? If so, how much did they rake ya for? I'm thinking I'll get the plugs/wires from BajaRon.

Thoughts?

I changed mine on the 2012 RT, the rear cylinder was easy. It's the front that requires patience. To get to the front you must remove the air box which is quite a pain. It took me about 5 hours and while I had it apart I changed the coolant.

What year bike do you have? :dontknow:
Changing the plugs (and wires) isn't something done just for the sake of putting them in...
If your bike is a 2013 or older; why not wait until you decide to have the valves checked, and then have the dealer do it?

2010 RT SM5. Has just over 15k miles on it.

The plugs should be fine...
If you want to follow the maintenance protocols to the letter; you could start to get ready to have your valves checked... most folks wait at least another 10,000 miles.
I'd have the parts ready, for when you have that service done.

Recall

I'm having the recall done on my 2013 RT-S 15.5k miles on it. So in order to take advantage of the BRP supplied labor I'm having the plugs, wires (Bajaron Supplied) & air filter changed at the same time.:yes::yes:

I guess Not answering your question about the stealership, but I put Rons plugs and wires on My SpYdeR Id say way better quality than the OEM. Not a horrible Job but patience were required. Quite obvious the factory wires are garbage compared too Rons Doug

Have them check the valve adjustment too. Adjustment probably not needed but now's the time to check. Smart plan to change the air filter. The service mgr said it's a bear to get to. My dealer is saving me a whole bunch of money from what they estimated earlier to do the 14k mile service. IIRC the labor charge will be $160 vs $400. Parts will cost the same either way. I've got over 19k on mine so I'm overdue for the 14k service.

The service mgr said the high priority items are the plugs and air filter. About 80% don't need a valve adjustment done, but the check is advisable since they're going to be right there anyway.

Thanks for bringing this up. It prompted me to get an order in for Ron's wires and plugs. I wasn't going to worry about the wires but changed my mind.

I am doing exactly the same thing. JT's air filter, BajaRon plugs & wires, and a Wolo Bad Boy horn. The Spyder will be "naked", so,like you, I am taking advantage of the labor involved for the recall to get these same things done.

Just called my "Stealership". Quoted me $1000 to do plugs and valve check/adjustment.....:yikes: So, I said, "what about just the plugs?" He replies, "well that would only be about $60, plus the plugs, no wires are needed, it has coil packs". So how does this job go from $1000 down to only $60?? Is my dealer crazy? Are there really no wires to change? They're doing the same general labor under the hood... I'm baffled :banghead:

Heck, if they're only gonna charge $60 to do the plugs, I'm all over that deal. I smell a rat though. I'm in for some sort of surprise aren't I?

The wires are there and they are the weak point in the ignition system. You can do it. If you get frustrated walk away. I asked the tech at my dealer to listen to my engine two weeks ago to see how the valves sounded at idle. He said that they sounded fine and I have 21,000 miles on my RT.

BS

Something is very wrong here.....a 2010 engine is a v-twin 998 and has NO COIL PACKS ( the 1330 engine does )( I think you have the V-Twin ...Yes ??? ) and the Valve / check / adjustment is total BS....unless you have 30,000 + miles I wouldn't even considerate it......and even then the odds are NO ADJUSTMENT will be needed........If you need wires I'd advise BAJARON'S set because they will last the life of the Spyder ...unlike the garbage BRP puts on....This isn't just my opinion, this is what I've learned here .................Mike

:agree: Although to be fair to the dealer; they could have gotten confused over which bike you have, and the one that they were talking about...
BRP's plug wires are easily damaged, and they often get destroyed at the very first attempt to change the plugs. BajaRon's wires are the BEST!

I think I'll run the bike to the dealer and hold 'em to the quote they gave me for plugs. Probably gonna supply them with Ron's plugs/wires too. Should be interesting! Yes, it is the 2010 RT and yes I assume it has wires and NOT coil packs. (though I'm in their system and he did verify the year with me.

:hun: Really, they know your Spyder :dontknow: .....and still mentioned " COIL PACKS " :lecturef_smilie:..................I'd be very , very, nervous......I wish you a lot of luck on this .........Mike

Absolutely Amazing! Someone at the Dealership has they're (IGNITION) WIRES CROSSED! :roflblack:

I'd be happy to come to your house myself and do this job for a GRAND! If I could get enough of these jobs I'd give up selling sway bars!

I bet you would Ron!!! LOL......I agree, someone's yankin' my chain. I bought it there, and the previous owner bought it there.....so you'd think they would look it up before just guessing. Bunch of Yahoos!!!!:banghead:
I wonder if I'd have a leg to stand on if I went in there and said "you quoted me $60 for the job" I'm thinkin' NOT.:yikes:
