• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Hey Jim,
My wife called me at 2:30pm and told me the backrest had arrived already. The box was in good shape and the lady had her sign for it.
Wow, that is fast service. I'll get it from her on Friday and be ready for Saturday's ride.
Thanks so much,
DJ

Just took it for a longer run and couldn't be happier. Those of you waiting to receive it should really love it. Those of you on the fence should seriously consider it. I was already in love with the riding position of my F3 and the way you felt more a part of the bike in the corners. Was recently introduced to standing hard on the peg when cornering for even more fun. With the backrest it is even better since you can push into it and not have to rely on the handlebars for support. Can't wait to tackle some serious twisties now. Thanks again Jim!

Good question

I need to know as well. Mine should be delivered this week and I will let you know as I have a set of Cortech saddlebags that need to go on as well, but handles are a problem right now, so hoping they don't need the handles to work...

Hi

can you mount it without the grab handles?

I seem to remember Jim saying in an earlier post that you didn't have to put the grab bar back on if you didn't want to. I just went out and pulled it off to see for you and it looks like you can. You will need to use the part of the grab bar that the screw goes through or come up with something else to hold it on as the hole is too large for just a screw. I still had the longer screws that Jim supplied in these shots so it really isn't snugged down.

There is a black oxide coated hardened washer on the inside of the grab bars.
Use that washer and the original shorter bolt if you don't want to put the grab bars back on.

You could also use an 8 x 30 MM torx bolt which is more oval and may look better than the hex bolt.

I you want to use the recessed end washer you may be able to find a piece of black tubing to slide over the bracket tube and take up the difference of the wider lip of that washer.

The factory bolts have a black oxide finish and will start to get surface rust after a while. My bolts get a mineral spirits wipe down and 2 coats of VHT Epoxy. The ratcheting handles get completely disassembled and the same treatment.

The flat part between the mounting tubes can also be drilled to mount a plate to keep soft bags from flopping around or brackets to attach hard bags.
I can also redesign the brackets with more metal and bolt holes underneath if there are a specific set of bag brackets that most would be using.

The majority of my F3-s accessories have been on back order for 45 days :-(

Along with my F3-s I ordered all the options to make it the Touring Escape model. Still haven't received the passenger detachable backrest, Hardbags, Fat wheel rims, Akrapovic exhaust, the additional front lights, Driver floorboards, + etc. Are the backrest you ordered the detachable or stationary style ??

The backrest is easily transitioned between being used for the passenger or for the driver with no passenger. the first post in this thread shows the two different positions and due to the design there are practically an infinite number of adjustments. There are only 4 bolts (grab bar mounts) that secure the entire assembly to the bike so removing it completely wouldn't be difficult.

Just installed the new smoothspyder F3 backrest. Looks great, as you can see in the pictures already posted here.
All parts seem well designed and made. Sitting in the garage it seems to fit well for added back support I need.
I will be testing it out tomorrow morning on a long run, will report back on Sunday.
Thanks Jim for the fast service and quality product.
