Safety of Spyder versus typical motorcycle

I'm about ready to make a final purchase decision between a Spyder and a typical motorcycle and I would really appreciate any feedback from Spyder owners who have owned both. Do you feel that the Spyder is a safer option than a normal touring cycle? The steering felt a little strange to me on the Spyder during the test ride...not sure how it will feel on a winding back road at 60mph. I don't plan to use this as a commuter or split any lanes...just looking for a fun ride for casual weekends.

Believe you'll find the steering is smoother at speed than when slow in a parking lot.

Read the brochure again concerning safety systems the Spyder has,
it's jyust amazing and as good as new cars.
I had for 25 years motorcycles, never felt so safe as on this vehicle.
Steering is a bit different but you learn that quick.
You wont regret to choose for the Spyder, especialy when you are familiar
with this 'bike'

From what you say you will be using it for , i belive you would really like the Spyder,i have been riding motorcycles for 45 yr. and still ride 7 days a week to work 365 rain or shine here in ca. it is yearround riding. the more you ride the spyder the more fun it is, my daughter rode mine and i rode my harley last sunday we rode about 80mi. total her second time on the :spyder: first time out on the road she loved it.
I think you would be very happy with a Spyder for what you want a bike for . :welcome: in advance if you go our way ;D ;D good luck and safe riding no matter what you get :bigthumbsup:

From what i've read and seen from YouTube videos the answer maybe no... but can someone tell me for sure.

I'm a newbie... Got my MSF course passed with Motorcycle license back in October.
I went to motorcycle shows up here in NewEngland, and absolutely fell for the Spyder.
My had done a lot of research and visiting dealers... It was between the Yamaha VStar 650 Silverado and the Spyder.

(The only way the wife would agree was to get the Spyder.) So In February I put down my deposit. It's expected at the end of May.

Congrats on the course. A safety course should be mandatory before getting a bike. Maybe not the spyder but certainly 2 wheels. My bet would be you could tip it same as you could a car. But the DSS certainly is a significant help in preventing it. Good luck & enjoy.

Thanks for the feedback...I went ahead and made the purchase today and brought home number 2281. I think I was very lucky to avoid the wait (I had a deposit down two weeks ago). Sounds like the supply has almost caught up to demand.

I have to say that it handled quite nicely on the highway, even better than I expected.

BRP did a good job at finding the line between too safe and too fun. Yes you can still get out on control just like a car but it will never slip out or fall over and you would be hard pressed to every get it to flip. I've pushed the Spyder to it's limits may times and I can say that if I was goiing on a long trip and I knew I was going to hit some bad weather I would take the Spyder everytime. I've ridden on roads that were full of sand and slush and never had to slow down. If I would have been on my bike I would have been puckered up the whole trip.

I have been on this board since Oct 07 when I order my spyder. I haven't posted that much(infact I had to create a new id for some reason). But I read something like this where someone goes in and just buys one when I have been waiting for 7 mths. I happy for twalte2281, I really am...It is just frustrating to have waited 7 mths and need to wait another 2 (especially now with the weather turning) and someone who just starting looking into it can go get one... Oh well...just blowing off frustration :dontknow:

If it were me and I was waiting I would contact BRB [email protected] and tell them you found a Spyder at another dealer and you would just like to pick it up from them and not wait months and see what they say. My dealer had 4 units ready to pick up last I checked.

I suspect that inventories are much higher than anticipated where I live...housing has dropped 30-40%, people are experiencing record foreclosures, and everyone's home equity has taken a significant hit. We're one of the worst housing foreclosure markets in the country, so people have probably lost their equity and are unable to pay for the Spyders they ordered. My understanding was that I was #70 on their list, so they probably had a lot of people ask to "pass" and wait for a future delivery while they try to secure additional funds.

Just a guess, but it's gotten really ugly for a lot of families trying to keep a roof over their heads.

I hear ya. I ordered in August '07. My wife ordered 2 - 3 weeks later. Her silver Spyder came in last week, #2518. I got the call yesterday my yellow Spyder was in, #3783. Really, the actual Premier Edition number doesn't mean that much to me except for the fact that BRP has kind of tied that number into the 2500 first owners. Then to hear that other dealers have unsold Spyders sitting in the showroom that have lower Premier Edition numbers than I got is frustrating. Like I said, its not the actual number I got that matters to me, but the fact that BRP is apparently "playing games" with their Premier Edition Spyders. In a Spyder chat March 31 on the SpyderTalk board, Marc from BRP stated that he thought that the final PE # would be around 3300. Two weeks later I get a number close to #3800.... :dontknow: Who runs a business like that? And why wouldn't you know how many Premier Edition bikes you sold and their numbers? The deadline for ordering PE bikes was back in September and you don't know how many were ordered 6 months later? Seems like BRP is more lax in their accounting and record keeping than I would be if I was building machinery that costs thousands of dollars.
