Robbed - 9300 mile service cost

I feel we were robbed and would like others input. My wife owns a 2017 RT Limited. We are on travel and she had enough miles where we needed to find a dealer to do the 9300 mile routine service. Closest dealer was 2 hours, we called made appointment and went yesterday. We left the Spyder and went and explored the area while they were working on it. When we got back to pick it up they charged us $420 for what is basically only an oil change. Back home, standard service runs us around $150.

We had no choice as we had to get this done due to mileage. What do others pay for a routine service?

OUCH...! ! !

i would have paid them with a smile on my face... left the dealer, rode around the corner, called my credit card company, and filed a DO NOT PAY complaint...

i've only done that ONCE.... and the return reply from the crook was, "oh, we made a mistake... we mistakenly charge you for somebody else's bill".... i call BS on that...

They gave us OUR bill that showed the oil change and maybe 20 check/inspect items. They charged us $130/hr and took 2.5 hours.

So it would seem....

Unfortunately it is the cost of the first sevice because there is more involved with this one than your regular oil change. I usually only do the first service with the dealer as it sets up the break in as going well and if any claims should be needed they cannot say you did not have it done. I do not know if what they charged is the going rate but I paid somewhat less for mine though some years ago. You can double check by asking them what an oil change costs parts and labor or check with other dealers as to what the first service charges are. Now if they did what has to be done it is alot more than the oil change.

Thanks for the input. This was the 2nd service but I assume there is a checklist that BRP puts out for the 9300 mile service. Just very surprised at the cost. Here is the list of things they say they did:

  • You didn't ask what the cost was going to be?
  • Where is 'back home' and how do do you know they charge $150 for the same service?
  • Was this in a large metro area where everything is expensive?

Not enough info. Where and what dealer did this service? Where is your home dealer? Tom :spyder:

$118

my dealer charges $118 per hour.....
this is 1 reason why i do all my own servicing.... the other reason is because i want it done right, and the last reason is, because i love working on my own toys....
on your next trip, plan it so you won't need any scheduled servicing....

(I notice that the OP is full-time RV'ing; my comments are directed to you with concern for your well-being.

Unless you have a lot of disposable income, I think you're going to need to be able to do your own servicing and minor repairs on machines, appliances, plumbing, propane and electrical systems. If you think Spyders are expensive to maintain, just wait until you have anything mechanical or electrical go wrong with your RV, tow vehicle, motor home, whatever. nojoke

Pete;
my idea of a motor homes, is a COMFORT INN, HILTON, SUPER 8, etc.... never had a desire for camping of any kind...
and as for fix'n things, if you'll notice my LINKEDIN account, i've been credited with the ability to fix 'broken water'.... not me, it's other people that have made that comment...

Ha! I wasn't clear I guess; my comment was directed at the OP, who is full-time RV'ing.

sounds like all labor to me.. Parts are probabaly under 100 bucks. (Oil and filter.)

If all that was checked its all labor hours.

You can always tell them not to do all that stuff and just do an oil and filter change.

Services by dealers

I just brought my '16 RT in for my 9300 mile service(slightly ahead of schedule due to an upcoming trip). I asked for the 9000 mile service when I made the appointment, but when it was dropped off they had 2 lists for their services. Either the first service or their full service. The full service included checking the valves for adjustment.

I ended up getting the "first service" done. I have since checked with 2 other dealers in my area and they also perform their services in a similar fashion. In other words, so far, none of them follow the recommended service schedule as outlined in the owners manual.

There is NO valve check adjustment on the three cylinders (2016 RT). When they were recommended (for the 998 twins)--they cost an extra $800 or so above the regular service price. The valve check intervals were also recommended at 14K intervals (not as a "full service" option).

Many dealers--now including mine--don't have a clue when it comes to service. Best to read the manual so you can tell them what you need.

A typical "oil change/filter service" costs mostly about $300 - $350. Therefore, I would make the comment that your dealer is on the "high" side. Mine now charges $120 per hour. 2 hours plus service plus the $80 or so oil change filter kit and you are very close to the $300 amount.

Kudos to those that can perform their own service. I cannot get down there and do it myself.

Ypur dealer must have been looking at the 998 service schedule. NO Valve Adjustment for the 1330 motor. Your final comment is oh so true. Both of our RTs are under warranty, so I hope the dealers are not "cutting corners" until our warranty period expires and then WHAMMO. Because of my wife's back we don't ride long distances, we trail. So my annual mileage is 3500 miles. Each year around the end of October, I take my Spyder in for its annual service. I tell them that it's X# of years old so they can be looking for wear-n-tear items. All I get charged for is an oil & filter change.

Just why does a Can AM Spyder need all these things checked? Don't they check all these things when it is setup? I will never take any Spyder that I own to a dealer unless there is something wrong with it I cannot fix. The prices they charge for an oil change is ridiculous compared to any other bike. I have owned several BMW's and I thought they were expensive so I always did my own service but they are cheap compared to Can Am products.

SERVICE

The bottom line is to do it yourself if able. You save on the outrageous labor costs and you know it is done to your satisfaction.

I feel we were robbed and would like others input.

You have been a member of this forum for 6 years.......and have never seen any other posts about WIDE VARIATIONS in dealers service charges ?
I assure you that there have been many.

You should have asked up front.
You should ALWAYS ask up front.

That is "capitalism" at work. They can charge whatever the market will bear.
