risers?

retread

New member
I'm in the process of installing the NMN 4 inch risers, having a problem. I can't find enough length to get the wiring harness to reach. Getting ready to strip the tupperware off the whole front end, maybe it's buried behind the trunk. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

My husband put mine on last week, took the trunk off theres a "zip tie" that needs to be cut to give you the length you need. This is a great Mod you'll love them.

Has anyone noticed that the throttle cables are the biggest restriction?
After I installed the 4" risers, I was not able to pull them back very far without causing a problem when turning the bars to the right. :dontknow:

You will need to gain access to the throttle cables by removing both the side panels... The factory has used ties to bind the cables... also you may have to re-route one or both. Ihad to re-route plus cut the cable ties.

I installed my 4" risers and had the same problem. I took spydie apart and cut all cable ties and the throttle cables were still too small. I went to my dealer to get longer ones but BRP doesn't make longer ones. I had a guy here in San Diego make me a longer pair (he does them for harleys). For some reason that neither of us understood, the new ones kept binding. So, I had to go back to the dealer and buy another stock pair and install them. I've re-routed them every which way and anyway you look at it, they are still too short. One of the cables routinely popped out from under the metal hook and rubbed against the end of the metal hook. I had to put a rubber hose on the end so it wouldn't damage the cable. I'm very careful about not turning my spyder all the way to the right. I contacted the manufacturer (NMN) and they insist that the cables are not too short which is balony. I think no one says much about it because NMN advertises on the BRP site. Anyway, that's my dig on the whole issue. Spyderwoman

SpyderJim,
Don't be so worried, here is a repeat of my answer from the General Forum discussion.
Jim,
I put the risers on by myself and it took less than an hour. After having done it, I could do it in even less time than that now. It is fairly easy. The hardest part is if you need to go down into the spyder and cut off some ties to get some of your extra length in cables. Remember to get 3 inch risers if you already have the 1' BRP riser (that's what I did) If you don't have the BRP you can get the 4" if you need too. My favorite thing about the risers is that I could adjust them specifically to my preferences as far as how far back or forward I wanted them tilted. I absolutely love these and they are by far my best mod I would say.

When I installed my risers I had to reroute the trunk release cable because it crossed over and limited the cables for the left side of the handle bars. I was able to cut the zip tie in the front of the spyder shown in the photos by Lamonster without removing the trunk. Its visible from the side once you have the Y body panel removed.

Verify that your dealer did not already install the 1 inch BRP riser. I know some dealers were doing that and if they did then your cables will be too short if you try and install 4 inch NMN risers. Also, with only 1 inch determining too short versus not too short, I think the cable tension at full turns is always going to be pretty tight. Most people that have posted here noted that the cables were tight.

I installed (finally) the 4" NMN risers on my spyder with tremendous ease.

And the black anodized finish on them compliments the bike nicely..

Thanks for all the help, still having problems. All the tupperware is off but the back panels, and still not enough wire, if I've got the 1 inch riser, the dealer snuck it in on me. What's the vertical dimension on the standard riser? This is getting frustrating, I've already missed 3 good ryding days.

If you do have the BRP 1" riser there's your problem. You can not put 4" risers on with the BRP 1" riser installed. You need to remove the BRP riser for it to work. I've installed plenty of these now and have yet to have a cable problem that wasn't solved by cutting a ziptie.

If you have the 1 inch BRP kit installed the 4 inch risers WILL NOT WORK.

As our web site says.....

"The 4 inch kit is only for Spyders who DO NOT have the 1 inch BRP factory riser kits.

The 3 inch kit is designed to be used when you already have the BRP 1 inch factory riser kit installed, or if you don’t want as much rise in your bars."

I also now every time a person calls to order a set of risers it is a company policy that all our staff asks if you have the 1 inch kit installed. So, I am not sure how you got a 4 inch set, unless you ordered it on line and missed the above lines? Or if you did not know you had the 1 inch kit when you ordered. :dontknow:

Give us a call and we can help you get the correct set so you can get out and enjoy your Spyder.

Well you are the only one who has ever had a problem with the stock cables being too short and then longer cables still not working that I know of. Are you saying there is no cable length that works with these risers? The metal hook you refer to is not necessary to keep the cables in place. There is no place for them to go that would cause a problem with the steering or binding. Maybe that's where your real problem is.

I have well over 15,000 miles on my 4" risers with the stock cables with zero issues. I would be glad to take a time stamped photo of my cables to show you there is no wear issues of any kind.

To say that none of the 300+ members that have installed these risers are not saying anything because NMN is a site sponsor is "balony". You can bet you would be hearing about it loud and clear on this board if there was a issue. I will never endorse a product that I think is not worthy or has some sort of issues that I know about.

I'm sorry you couldn't make these work but you are in the minority here for sure and not because people are afraid to say anything about a site sponsor.

Hi, put mine on about 2 weeks ago. A few suggestions... Make sure wires and throttle cables run on the inside of the risers (closer to the seat)and not the back side. Study photos online and look where they are routed, It worked for me.. Was having same problem. Make sure you install controls on new tubes then bolt tubes on risers or you won't get them on.. figured that out too :yikes:after a while.. I only needed to cut one ziptie for down by the trunk where wires plug in, was able to slide the rest up the channel where it was ziptied to. Hope this helped..

Again, thanks for the help and suggestions. I'm thinking that most of my problem is the lack of space to work on this. My daughter moved in with me, and most of her stuff is in my garage, I have to move the Spyder patially outside to work on it and my driveway is on a slope, so I can't take it too far out.:dontknow: There is nothing wrong with the risers, it's the way the wiring harness in my Spyder was installed. I am getting ready to do the cut and splice routine if I can't find where the factory laced in the wiring, no big deal, in my working life I was an industrial electrician, building or extended harnesses is just part of the job.

Take a look around the airbox snorkel. When I had my side panels off I noticed that my throttle cable was on the inside of the snorkel. If it goes to the outside it gives you more slack.

I HAVE THEM THERE WAS NOT A PROBLEM AT ALL THEY WORK GREAT AND FIT GREAT TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO:spyder2::clap::f_spider: UNDO THE WRAPS THAT ARE HOLDING THE CABLES TOGRTHER

Thanks Sleepman

I'll take the tupperware off this weekend and look a little closer at the throttle cables again.

Thanks, but now I have another problem. The side with the clutch lever grips wouldn't come off so I had to cut them as mentioned. Where I goofed was in taking the clutch lever and the refverse gear completely apart since they wouldn't slip off. (BAD MISTAKE!!!) I am having a He** of a time in putting them back together. I am just about ready to call a tow truck and have it taken to the dealer. Embarrasing, but I am at my wits end. At least, I think I have the throttle side OK, but have one question.
Does the original plastic sleeve go (approx 1" long) next to the risers and which way does it face. There is an inside lip on one end. Also does anyone have a suggestion how to put the reverse lever back together?:dontknow:

The sleeve can be reused if you cut the lip off. Otherwise it is not used.

As far as the reverse cable goes, the first time never having done it before can be a pain. But just keep at it. However make sure you are runnuing the cable throught the hole in the left riser block. The cable must go through the riser block hole to get it to install.
