• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Reverse Gear

Has anyone out there had trouble with the reverse on there RT SM5.:gaah: I have a intermittent problem were I cann't get the reverse gear to engage.:dontknow:
Have had to push the :spyder2:out of traffic and then the next time I try it all works fine.
Do you think it could be the GPS (gear position sensor)???
Thanks in advance.

Do you get a transmission error on the display? Does it seem that the transmission is in reverse, but the Spyder just doesn't recognize it? The GPS is merely an indicator of which gear has been selected. If it is not right, the Spyder may not like it, but this is less critical for a manual transmission unit. An improper indication would usually require a new GPS...plus calibration of the new unit.

If you are unable to move the shift lever to select reverse, the problem is likely in the reverse lever/cable assembly somewhere. If you can move the lever, but reverse won't engage, the problem is more likely in the gear selector mechanism in the crankcase...or the shift linkage. These are not problems you are likely to be able to repair yourself. I'm afraid a visit to the dealer will be in order...unless you have no hesitation about tearing into the engine.

I seem to have fixed the problem. Under the clutch lever is a tiny thin wire that presses onto a micro swicth when you pull the lever in. The wire must have got court on a cloth when I have been washing the spyder. I bent the wire back into place and all seems OK. Something for all SM5 owners to keep an eye on.:spyder:

Clutch switch?...good find! Don't know why this would only affect reverse, though. :dontknow: It should also have affected starting, unless you were starting in neutral.

good to know... noted and hope I remember if it ever happens ...

You are spot on Scotty. You can only start when in neutral if the switch is not engaged. A mate of mine had the problem of stalling and could only restart if he put it to neutral. Once he fixed the little bugger all was well.
