Something missing today!!
Respect and Discipline were things that used to be taught in school and to all children. In most cases discipline was what created respect. When I was a child I crawled into the dogs house to see its new puppies, the dog protecting it puppies bit me causing me to have respect for her, her house, and her puppies.
When I acted out in school and disrupted class I was whacked across the hands with the long pointer that the teacher used at the black board. This made me respect the teacher and made me follow the instructions I was given.
When my mother told me to finish my homework and I went out and played instead, I was spanked, grounded, and lost some of my privileges until I complied with what she asked.
I was taught respect for people and had a fear of what could happen to me if I didn't do what I was instructed to do. I feared what my Mom and Dad would do if they found out I didn't have respect for people older than me who had authority over me. When I went to school that first day, my parents passed retained their authority over me but set the school staff as second in command until I arrived in their presence again. At that time they talked about the school day, how it went, if I had any problems, and if I had obeyed the people they had given the authority too.
I feared my parents and what they could do to me causing me to respect them. My parents loved me dearly and would defend me to the bitter end if I was correct in what I had done, but they also would be the first one to chastise me if I was in the wrong. That fear of my parents was a fear of them holding me to a higher standard and me disappointing them with foolish actions. They worked hard to have a great name in the community and they deserved more than me disrespecting them causing reproach to be brought on the family name. The family name was all that we had, we were poor people who had to work hard for everything we had, pick pickles for school clothes, new clothes to us were from the second hand store, yet we were always clean, not dressed in the latest fashions but well dressed, and we did what we said we would do, we were people who kept our word.
Now before someone gets upset about me fearing my parents, remember in the scriptures it speaks of fearing God. Fearing God does not mean you are afraid of God, you are afraid of disappointing him, and of what he can do to you, yet he is still the first one you run to when there is a problem you cant handle.
This is the same fear we used to be taught to give people of authority such as teachers, police officers, fireman, and military personnel. We were taught to respect them, comply with their request, and if it was something where we were in the right pursue it later. When we challenge authority we usually are the one that pays the price at the time the challenge is laid down because of the environment we are in and the adrenaline that is involved. If we comply without challenge at the time and then pursue a wrong doing later when we all have cooler heads we all would be better off.
We vilify people in authority when they use force to get us to comply and yet if we would comply force would not be needed.
The girl in SC would not have been thrown to the ground if she would have complied with what the officer requested at the time. The officer would not be put in the situation where he possibly could have harmed her, and possibly faces charges if she just would of had a little respect and fear instilled in her and she would have complied.
We need to teach our children and grand children to again respect authority, comply with request at the time, unless they are a threat to our life, and pursue any wrongdoings the next day after we think about it with a cooler head. It COULD save their lives!!!
