I had a 1967 VW Westfalia poptop camper van many years ago.
Getting the engine out of it was a lot easier than a Bug, although the chopped off rear end of a Baja Bug that was probably even easier than my Westie.
With the Westie, after you removed the rear bumper there was a rear panel that was held on with 4 bolts, and then access to the engine was as easy as it would be on a Baja Bug.
Mine had a slightly built engine (1641cc?) with a counter weighted crank, mild cam, and dual Kadron carburetors.
I sold it when I moved from S. California to the MidWest, as I couldn't imagine driving it in snow and ice, and didn't want to see it rust away.
I didn't know the person I sold it too, but a few years later while visiting some friends in S. California they told me what happened to it.
The guy I sold it to drove it down to Mexico, apparently packed all interior storage cabinets with some illegal substances, and then tried to drive it back across the border. He was caught, ended up in jail, and the bus was seized and probably ended up being crushed.
