Replace with Elkas vs. BRP eom shocks - opinion pls

I'm considering upgrading the std shocks on a 2010 RT. We have heard lots of accolades about the Elkas and a couple other brands. If there are any owners who have replaced their 2010 shocks with BRP's shocks with the 2011 (or newer if available) shocks, your opinon would be greatly appreciated. I'm not an aggressive rider, mostly country day rides.
If you have replaced with the newer BRP shocks and could do over, would you have "popped" for the Elkas? Thank you in advance......

ThreeWheels just opened up a post in the RT shop Talk section about this; He upgraded to BRP newer shocks and loved them...

I have a 2010 RTS. I added the evo sway bar last year, it helped with the stock shocks cranked at highest stiffness. I have now installed Elka Stage 5 shocks, and after some tuning I can say that the improvement in high speed turning is VERY significant. If you ride hard, you will not be sorry. This is a pricey upgrade, it is easily done yourself, and for me it provided significant improvement in ride quality. Hope this helps.

I bought the Works shocks - at half the quoted price of the Elka shocks. Love them - tunable, remote reservoir, great feel. I also used an old set of shock covers to keep the crud out. You won't regret the upgrade.

It's a simple 45 minute project too.

I thought about the '11 shocks, but OEM equipment is OEM equipment, and I wanted something better for my money. The Works shocks were within $200 of dealer's price for the OEM's, as I recall… The Works folks were good to work with, and sent me shocks that were already set up for me and my riding style/area (non-freeway, twisty back roads.)

Good luck with your quest.

I didn,t think the Works were available for an RT. They come stock on the 2012 RS-S is all I know?:dontknow:

Elka Stage 5

I replaced my 2010 original shocks to the new ELKA Stage 5 last thursday and i had a long trip to Daytona and was a verry pleasant trip verry stable and smooth ride way better then the NC ride with my old BRP shocks.

Last December, I was debating on getting Elkas for my 2010 RT AC, but they just were not in my budget. A fellow spyder lover sent me a set of BRP shocks off of a 2012 RT Limited and they are great.

My spyder still has some roll in the twisties, but it is a lot better then it was. I keep them set on the firmest setting, but I am a big guy (over 300lbs). Most of the time my wife rides with me. The biggest difference I noticed was in the wind. It does not dart around as much as it did with the 2010 shocks.

One day I will get with Len and get the Elkas (probably the stage 1 performance kit) for my RT, but mine is fine the way it is now and will give me time to save up for it.

If I had to buy the shocks from the dealer, I would have waited and got the Elka's.

I bounced back and forth on the elka vs newer brp oem shocks on my 2010 RT a&c.
i bit the bullet last week and took a road trip to Cowtown for the stage 2 RT performance package.
All i can say is WOW!! the elkas took me from white knuckle ryding at near posted speeds on twisties to a relaxed cruise at 10 and even more MPh over posted speed on same twisty road on the way home.
The road home through Ks saturday had heavy crosswinds with gust over 40 MPH and the difference the elkas made was incredible in steering effort under these conditions. Riding in KS you quickly get to be an expert at high wind conditions LOL
I am happy i chose the elkas over setttling for the newer oem shocks.
the rest of the stage 2 package is equally sweet. but a subject for another thread.

Ok I read that works were half the price....... So a phone call was made, being I buy 100s of set of shocks a year I thought what the heck, worth a shot...... I mean having another manufacture to pull from let's take a look.

First off I asked for shocks for a RTS.... Was told they don't make an RTS, can-am only RT's and RS's Huummm. Any ways fine ok I need them for an RT. The price was not 350.00 it was 849.00!! Wow, that's not what I read.... Next question what kinda shock is this. It's our base model piggyback ok.....then was told it was basily the same as the elka one way plus as far a the set up damping adjustment only, which is not bad, but why the piggyback??? The next step was about a grand. But did have high and low Adjustment, which is a good thing. Works does build good products. Can-am uses some of there stuff on the race team. But they are not half price, nor are they as knowledgeable about there products....... Don't take my word for it.
Call elks ask for John, spend 10 minutes on the phone with him. Ask the difference between piggyback shocks and high and low speed compression and about how your Spyder reacts. Then call works, give them the chance go into details. I don't have a dog in the fight, I could go with works or Elka. But I can say this John at Elka has been right here answering questions and taking care of Spyder folks for hundreds of sets, sponsoring our beloved site, and putting there money where there mouth is "spyderfest" all elkas are custom made.

Bottom line both build good products, Elka has had the most experience building Spyder shocks, also a site sponsor, and a site member and listens to us, if you've got a problem they will take care of you. And the base model elkas start at 700.00 plus you get a Spyderlovers member discount. Go with the one who earns your biz! Elka earned mine, along with a lot of other members, anyone wonder what Lamont rolls on:thumbup: I know what I roll on "ELKA"

My new Elkas are coming soon so I have some 2011's (5K miles on them) for sale in a few weeks if any one is interested. I have no idea if there will be much difference, I ordered the Elka's before I found out the 2011's were new and improved. Personally I don't have any complaints on the way the RT handles now but I had heard so much about the Elka's I took a leap of faith. lol...

I was an early adaptor for shocks - I had beefed up my RS - before I dumped it - knew what a difference a better suspension made. I have also had Works shocks, and Works rebuilt shocks on a number of bikes, SxS, and ATVs over the years.

The guy at Works was Mike - and I was the 2nd RT customer. I paid $665, delivered for my stage 3 shocks, and I was quoted $1230 delivered for Elkas, with pretty much the same spec. Mike worked with me to provide a semi=custom product, and Elka said to take what they offered. At the time, it was a "no brainer" for me.

Elka has marketed to the CanAm crowd, and no one else really has - but I still like my Works shocks, and highly recommend them.

Elkas vs. BRP shocks

Thanks to everyone who replied. This is a terrific! Your time and opinion is greatly appreciated.

Day an night

For me the diff of the OEM shock and the ELKA is day and night. It may be a spendy upgrade but I do think if you have a 2010 RT it would be worth the price no matter what type of ridding you do. They make the handeling that much better = safer! My $.02:ani29:

I replaced the stock shocks on my 2010 RT with 2011 OEM shocks and they are a lot better than the 2010 shocks and quite a bit cheaper than Elkas or Works. The plain fact is, I could afford the 2011 OEM's and I couldn't afford the better shocks. I don't regret my decision. Now, having said all that, my advice would be: If you can afford to spend $600 - $800 or more, buy Elkas or Works or Penskes, if for no other reason, the adjustability they offer plus the fact that they can be rebuilt. If, like me, you can only afford to spend $200.00 or so, buy the 2011 OEM's. They will make a noticeable difference in the ride even though they will not match the higher priced, after market shocks.
