relays, always carry a spare!

Yesterday was a perfect day for a ryde! One minor Spyder glitch.

Ksin's Spyder started to overheat due to a bad fan relay. Thanks to Lamonster and this forum for knowing how to troubleshoot. Once the fan relay was swapped with the headlight relay, problem solved. At least the fan was working until a spare relay could be purchased for the headlights.

I recommend everyone carry one or two spares!

I carry 4 of them now. nojoke Godd chance someone I'll be riding with will need one. :sour:

How much are you going to charge the poor devil? I think something like that is in direct proportion to the number of miles from civilization, isn't it? :helpsmilie:

FREE relays!

Hello everyone.
I tried to find these relays at the 3 local auto parts stores - couldnt find any to match the amperage. Went to TYCO electronics online and found a dealer in the area (atlanta) Im not sure what these relays cost at the dealer but retail besides the dealer is around $4 each. Well after talking to the TYCO dealer here he ended up sending me FREE samples - 3 of each relay!:ohyea:  Just thought I would pass this on to everyone - may be worth checking your local electronics supplier and requesting samples of these relays!!

From another Spyder owner:

MasterPro Ignition part BWD REF: R3110 (SMP REF: RY-232) is exactly the same as the relay in our Spyder. This relay can be purchased at Murray’s. We compared the relay in the Spyder with the BWD: R3110. They are identical…including the schematic drawing, as well as the amperage at each terminal/prong.

Rodger at NordRide in Mount Morris, MI says the OEM relay we got at Murray’s is good. He also said that BRP sells this part for about $10.00. Now whether this price is to the dealers or the consumer, I don’t know. With that said, Murray’s sells it for around $9.00.

I ordered a couple of BRP relays at the Spyder dealer today. The price was $9.99 each. The part number is 278002168.

I carry 4 as well.
We had a rider who traveled a long way for a ride and had no lights.
He was ready to go home early to beat the darkness.
Put a new relay in and all was good.

Wow, TYCO gave you something for free. They must have been having an off day (sorry, TYCO screwed my husband over years ago -- long story)

ANYWAY..... can you tell us where you went exactly to obtain the relays? (website address) I want to get a handful myself to carry around. I actually think I need to replace what I have in there now.

I found this over at SpyderTalk - http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=1432223-1&RQPN=VJ28-95F24-S01. Is this the one?

Thanks! :2thumbs:

That relay you linked to is not the same as the one used by the Spyder. I believe the Spyder TYCO relay is VJ28-95F74-S01 (not by my Spyder to check for sure) and is rated at 30 amps. I'm not saying that you have to use the 30 amp relays, on the contrary, I think the 20 amp relays will work. But I just wanted to clarify that those are not identical to the stock Spyder relay.

If indeed the dealer cost in ~$10 then why bother with an aftermarket that's going to cost $9.00? Just call up your dealer and order 2 spares for $20 and change.

I agree but I think the issue is that sometimes dealers don't have parts in stock and who wants to be sidelined for two weeks or more for want of a $10 relay?

I'm not techie but i want to say the relay in the 2008 looks different than the 2009. A Tyco versus something else. Docdoru did a post on this a few days back.:dontknow:

Maybe because the OEM brand has a significant failure rate?

.

I just took a cruise through the BRP parts fiche, and found that even for 2008, the SM5 listed two different relays, while the SE5 lists only four of the same relay. Both are listed at 30 amps? For the original relays, the large Tyco is a VF28, with a corresponding BRP number of 710000740. Interestingly, this does not come up as a Spyder part if you do a search to see what it fits. For the smaller, custom spec Tyco VJ28 relay (VJ28-95F74-SO1) the BRP part number is 278002168. I wonder if the 710000740 relay is even still available?

Maybe it's not available and they are just using the same one for all of them?

Oh this is entirely too frustrating. I'll just order some up at the dealer when I go in for my 15K service in mid to late July. I'll have them well before my September trip.

What Lamont and several others have gotten is the

Duralast
19271
41-5100

It also crosses with the Borg Wagner. That's the one I am getting for our trip out East.

Saw this on another board....

it's made by BWD Automotive. Numbers on the end of the box are: V08074 R3110Z 41-5100.

Advanced Auto has this item and apparently it's for Hondas yet it matches ours exactly??
