• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Rear tire replacement

Desert Spyder

Need to change my rear tire and brake pads. What's the latest and greatest out there, can a regular cycle shop do the work (I have a bike shop 200 yards from me), and what kind of prices are we looking at here including labor. Thanks

Rear tire

I just bought a 225/50/15 Kuhmo Ecsta AST from Tire Rack For $80 and had it delivered to my dealer. Called my dealer about having it installed and he told me that I would have to leave it. I talked to the mechanic and tried to tell him about the post on the forum about rear tire replacement.(which I can't find now) He was talking about having to realign the belt etc. which he just did about a month ago. Since this will Not be covered by warranty, and their labor rate is $90 per hour, I'm a little bit hesitant about leaving the bike. I don't like monetary surprises for repair bills. I have Ride-On for the tire, so am not worried about finding someone to balance it.
I have a local H-D mechanic, whom I trust, but wold like him to be able to read the post on changing the rear tire.

If you remove the rear shock bolt at the bottom you do not have to readjust the belt. It is fairly easy to do and there are several posts on here with detailed instructions.

I bought the same tire, removed it myself and took it to a local tire shop to get changed. I did have my dealer check the belt tension after I finished. Here is the post I followed:

As far as the tire goes, many guys are going withthe Goodrich G-Force Sport. I like this one:

The Yokohama AVS ES100. I'm going with either this on or the Falken ZE-912:

I just put a falken 512 on mine. I know it's been replaced by the 912 but from what I was able read, several said they preferred the 512 if you can find one:dontknow:. Anyway, so far so good. No rain yet though so we'll see.

HMMM... intresting. I see Discount Tire may still have the 512. We shall look into it. I still like the Yoko though, Great tire. Thay have a racing tire that is just ridiculously cool! G-Force has a DOT Spec racing tire that is pretty slick as well. In fact it is basically a slick!! :D Wouldn't do ya much good in the rain though!

falken 912 did not replace 512 but 512 is carried by discount tires, exclusively now.

anywho, i needed rear replaced also but neither of the dealer here will install any tires other than stock tires. i contacted few bike tire shop but only one was willing to do it but i could not let a guy who says "i never replaced one but i think i can do it" do it so i ended up getting a stock tire.
last 3 rear tires WERE replaced by a authorized dealer in los angels. one did without a word but the other had a disclaimer on the invoice saying they told me not to replace with non-stock tire and they are not liable for anything.

Sorry about the bad info on the 512. I just googled it when I was looking and found many websites that said it was discontinued.:dontknow: But you are right, I found one at a local Discount Tire store.

Many including but and myself have gone with the Kumho because you get just as many miles off the tire and good rain traction for a great price through tire rack dot com. Just my .02
