Rain Problems

RLH

New member
Hi! I'm fairly new to this so please bear with me.
I have a 2013 RT Limited and have severe water problems in the rain.
The rain gets on the inside of the windshield, the outside AND inside of my visor so I have very limited visibility and need to get off the road!

I was wondering if the vented windshield would solve the problem.

Any thoughts/ideas?

Thanks.

Riding through any type of "gully washer" will cause just the symptoms you mentioned. Many have suggested using Rain X or similar to coat the offending items.

Looking over the windshield, if possible, is good because you will sometimes get the necessary air flow to clean your visor. I sometimes bend forward to get the airflow from over the visor just for cleaning the helmet visor/faceplate.

I wear a FF helmet and have no big trouble in the rain with my vision. You might try adjusting your windshield up or down to help with the rain problem.....bottom line is you will get a little wet.

:agree: lower the windshield to where you are just looking over the top. As stated above this will give you airflow to help clear your visor and keep you from looking through the water on the shield.
I have a vented windshield and I close the vents in the rain because the air pocket that forms behind it helps keep the me and the passenger drier.

I have the vented windshield on my 2014 RT-S and I also had it on my 2012 RT-L. I don't ride in the rain much but, when I have, rain on the inside hasn't been a big issue.

Depends....

different helmets have different reactions to the circulanting rain in the dash area. The bigger windshields will cause this. Full face are best but not everyones choice. I like the modular helmet that work well with the options it affords. There are products for better sheeting of the rain off the shields. Ryding an RS with a flip shield avoids this but we do get a greater amount of the wet stuff. So my solution in many cases is to get out of the :cus: rain..:roflblack: This from someone in southern California.....

I agree with all of this but sometimes when it is really coming down you just have to stop until it slows down...

I have a 2013 RT LTD, also, with the stock windshield. Many of the comments, above, are dead on. I leave the windshield in the lowest position in the rain, to see over it. I wear a Nolan, N-104 modular that has a pin lock visor, so it doesn't fog up, easily, nor does water get on the inside. I do have to open it a click, when stopped, though.

As for stopping, it depends on where you are. If we can't get totally off the road, we keep moving, because, in limited visibility, someone approaching from behind may see your tail lights, not realized you are stop, and plow right into you. It happens.

We had a scheduled ryde last Saturday, and it rained the whole 65 miles I rode to the meetup, but I went, anyways, because the weatherman promised (and radar showed) that it would be gone before noon. Turned into an awesome day.

NOT RAINX !!!

RAINX is not meant to be used on plastic windshields or visors and may distort them or delete the anti fog characteristics that come on some of the helmet visors. Instead, you can use 2 other items. In most bike shops you will find they carry a spray can of Original Bike Spirits. It was originally called Honda Polish but the name was changed to that non Honda riders would use it. Cleans items well and helps keep your windshield and visor clear in the rain. I always have it with me. The second item you can get at large Marine Supply Stores and is called Vista Guard and does the same thing as RAINX but is made for plastic. I like the Original Bike Spirits because it serves as a quick detail product also and gives the bike a nice shine with no effort and quick application.

Rain-x now has a version for plastic windshields.

Thank You All!

Thank you all for some great ideas.

I have a full-face but don't usually wear it on the SPYDER. I prefer the half helmet with the flip-up visor and flip-down shades. I also have my Scala attached to it so changing mid-trip (in the rain) to my full face is a real hassle. I'll try the Rain-X Plastic as riding season is fast approaching (Ontario, Canada).

Thanks again!

Windshield Wipers?

Okay, I've been too chicken to ask, but this seems like a good time to make a fool of myself ... our RTs have every other creature comfort, necessary or not, so is there a reason that BRP doesn't provide something as important as a windshield wiper?

With a plastic windshield and all of the junk coming off of the road in a rain, your windshield would be too scratched to see through in a very short while. The scratched would be in the same path the wiper would take.

Look what they do to a glass windshield over time.

We don't need a windshield wiper... nojoke

Look OVER the top of it, and keep your faceshield clean by tipping your head sideways. The airflow around you will clear it quickly.

Ahhh, yes, plastic versus glass. I didn't think of that. Thanks!

My problem is I'm 5'2", so when my windshield is all the way down, the top edge is directly in my line of sight. I do stretch taller to peer over it, but that gets tiring. My (photochromic) cycle glasses don't self-clear too well, so I'm better off leaving the windshield all the way up.

I'm glad you're having fun at The Fest!!

So, rural girl, is fitting a shorter windscreen a priority for you, even especially?) if it's justfor safety reasons?? ;)

RLH, I don't really think you'll ever solve the 'rain getting inside your visor' issue & subsequent visibility concerns until you go down the full face helmet path! :( That's one of the major drawbacks with riding wearing open face helmets & the like, regardless of the visors you might fit; if/when it rains, your face & the inside of the visor WILL get wet, eventually.... Another of the drawbacks is that if you do happen to be involved in a prang, the risk of getting injuries on your lower face is massively increased - someone might have the chart that shows the statistics, but there are very good reasons that it's usually those wearing full face helmets who ever get to walk away from any sort of prang involving a motorcyclist ending up on the road!! Helmets can only protect those parts of your face that they cover/enclose!!

Are full face helmets annoying & confining?? Possibly.... Is it a nuisance to wear one all the time?? Also possibly.... :opps:

But they do tend to keep the rain off your face & the inside of your visor a helluva lot better than anything else; and they do tend to keep your face looking just as pretty as it ever did a whole lot better than just about anything else too!!
