• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Pumping breaks?

Rar

New member
I downshift in my preparation for stops and so, am not applying my brake until I am almost stopped. However, there is certainly a need to alert the driver behind me of my intent to stop or slow down. I don't want to set off any limp mode stuff if I'm tapping my brakes.

What do you folks do?

brakes are way cheaper than clutches

so,,,,,, i downshift right before i stop. if i had an s e , i guess i would let it downshift by itself, and brake normally.

When i had my Spyder , I would do what i always do on all my Machines, If a car was close behind hit the brake come off and hit the brake again and THEN hold it steady.
Also mine was a Sm5, So i also used engine braking.
I don't know about limp mode, never seen it, I do know with ABS you don't pump the brakes, That only defeats the purpose of ABS.

During my MSF training course (2 wheel), the instructors stressed to apply your brake signaling the intent to stop or slow down to the drivers behind you. I didn't want to tap my brakes on my Spyder because I don't want to confuse the computer-----or can I?

Your training was Right! You should always be aware of whats behind you (At All Times) and if their close as you come to a stop tap the brake as you begin to stop and as many times as it is needed to fully alert them.
I also Always tap my brake if I,m approaching a side street where someone is sitting and could possibly pull out in front of me!
This gets the attention of the person behind me IF the jerk all of a sudden pulls out in front of me so there sort of forwarned!

I've normally got the cruise control on, so I tap the brakes to release it, then usually tap it at least one more time before I turn. Never had any problems.

Hi Rar!

Tapping the brake a few times prior to engine breaking does not trigger limp mode or any other fault. At least it does not on my 2012 rss.
Typically, the design engineers would see that as a potential common breaking protocol. (

Considering most, if not the majority of us do tap the brake to notify vehicles to the rear)

Safe riding!

SE5 and I downshift it and let the engine slow me down. I tap the brakes 4 or 5 times slowly, enough to turn the light on, as soon as I let off the throttle if somebody is close.

Tapping your brakes will not set off limp mode. However, riding with your foot on the brake pedal will. So go ahead and tap your brakes.

Well; there's tapping... and then there's TAPPING!

A couple of taps won't give Nanny an upset stomach. If you keep it within a reasonable amount it'll all be fine!

Like most above--I give the brakes a tap or two when there are drivers behind me that I want to warn of my intentions.

Never had a limp mode go on for that reason.

:agree: Limp mode is triggered by your foot riding the pedal but not applying any actual brake pressure. A few light touches, or lightly applying the brakes, will not harm anything.

Thanks everyone for these helpful posts. I won't be so apprehensive in tapping my breaks to signal slow down and or stopping intent. I appreciate the help.:bowdown::bowdown:

ENGINE BRAKING

Race car drivers use their engines and therefore their transmissions to help them slow down........But they don't pay for those so what do they care......I agree with COZ , if you have a $1000 or so to fix the tranny/clutches etc. on your Spyder go for it.......JMHO....Mike

One or two brake taps

Maybe this is a Connecticut thing. I was born and raised in Long Hill - a little part of Trumbull -several centuries ago. I've always tried to let whomever is behind, even if it's "nobody" I can see in the mirror, know I'm about to stop or slow. In the mountains with other bikes, we always do it as a courtesy also. Lots of southern folks also signal when they are following someone making a turn - that can get a little confusing, but is basically a good idea, most of the time!!

Brakes

On my 2011 rt for the first 8,000 miles I would tap brakes several times no limp mode.
I now have the third brake light with street magic that can be set 9 different patterns.

If you want to alert drivers behind you install a wake up/brake flasher

Custom dynamics (Site Sponsor) sells one with just plug and play pig tail for the Spyder.

I'm useless with mechanicals but even I installed one myself.

It can set to any of 10 patterns, you simply press your brake it will flash the brakes lights for you, wakes up the driver behind you for sure.

Custom Dynamics Magic Brake light strobes

I also added tricled 3rd and 4th running/brake lights while I had the back off, again a very simple install and works with the above flasher

With these mods no one will ignore the fact your braking.

Scroll down about halfway to see the lights.

I still want to install the HMT (high mounted tail light), rear bright side and lighted mud flaps and and should be all set for being seen from the rear.

What is this 3rd brake light? When Hubby rides his HD behind me,he says my brake and signals are difficult to see unless he is right up close.

Thank you,Harry! Your post just popped up. I will have my Hubs check it out. It sounds perfect for making me more comfortable.:bowdown::bowdown:
