Problems after exhaust install....

Hey everyone, I installed a tailgunner exhaust just prior to the snow last year. Rode it around for a few hundred miles, and everything seemed great!!! Ballsy sound, sweet looks, all good. The weather is finally starting to break, so I got the bikes out.

The spyder is beginning to have quite a bit of hesitation upon acceleration; from just cruising around town or on the highway to giving it some throttle. Seems as it stutters a bit before it rockets off. And just cruising around town 35mph it acts like it is missfireing too. The spyder has always turned heads, but now Im wondering if its turning heads for the wrong reason because the exhaust sounds like crap.

I am also noticing quite a bit of popping and what sounds like mini explosions inside the tailgunner exhaust can. If i give it some throttle just off off idle, i notice it popping and stuttering, as well as the can actually shaking excessively when this happens.

Now i have read tons of forums about the juice box, O2 modifiers and such. I have two other bikes, an 03 harley vrod A model and an 09 harley vrod muscle. Both of my other bikes have had exhaust changes, along with K&N air filter plus a powercommander. These bikes were tuned last year, but recently each of these bikes are experiencing the same thing as the spyder this year. The muscle has reversion in the pipe, and this seems to be a problem with the muscle tunes per the 1130cc.com forums. The tune I had prior showed this very little, however, on my ride home from church I had reversion horribly. The other V-rod is in the process of completely redoing the custom map due to a slight blip at cruising speeds, plus running dangerously lean at crusing speeds.

Im not sure if its just the slightly warmer weather that is doing this, but all 3 of my bikes have the popping problem now. I'll take care of the vrods with the power commander, but the spyder is what I need your opinions on. The only mod I have done to this is just the tailgunner exhaust.

In your opinions, which is the better way to try and tackle this stuttering and popping problem on the spyder. I see power commander came out with a box for the spyder, but the settings look identical to the juicebox settings. I hear some praising the O2 modifier... Im just not sure which way to go. You opinions are welcome!

Thanks everyone!!!

Mine was doing that after installing the HMF, believe it or not but I pretty much cured mine by just wrapping the exhaust.

the 02 did it for me ,runs grate.make sure no mise got in the pipe ive heard of that, and the bad gas might be what s wrong.but the 02 helps i know that for sure.:2thumbs::chat:

Check for exhaust leaks, have you done the Honda replacement gasket posted by many? If no leaks I would also recommend the 02 Modifier...

Add the o2 mod from evoluzione- will take care of problems.

:agree: I just got off the phone with Evoluzione because I'm having the same issue with backfire. He said the 02 modifier will correct the backfire with no load (not giving it gas) and the juice box will fix the backfire under load ( while giving it gas). So there ya go. I need the 02 mod because mine backfires when I let off the gas.

I assume your talking about a RS Spyder..Since other bikes are showing similar symptoms Is fuel in tanks been there all winter could be just bad fuel if not might be time for some minor tune up's Plugs, Air filter, Fresh fuel, Then try 02 modifier latter fixed mine for deceleration popping....

I run both the JB and O2 mod and mine runs like a bat outta hell......

Yes, I thought it might be the gas also, but I have run a tank of 93 octane through, and now about 1/2 tank of 89 through, just to see if that made a difference... went on a two hour ride tonight, still have the issue, however took the highway 75+mph and my ears were ringing so bad I couldnt tell if the exhaust was making the popping sound towards the end of the ride, hahaha.

Wondering if I should just buy me a high flow air filter, and put both the O2 modifier and the box on....

If Im reading this correctly all the bikes he has are having the same problem?

If that is true then you start with a with what they all have in common is this case Fuel.

Many believe fuel will last months!! not so anymore you are lucky to last 30 days untreated.

Add some Sea Foam to clean it out and use fresh fuel and stable it.

Why jump to changing or adding parts 1st ? start small and work your way up to big

:dontknow:
Your right about fuel not lasting long, But the common tread is Non factory pipes.
They tend to lean the fuel mixture leaner than the already lean mix. [EPA mandated]

I agree, fuel doesnt last long. Each bike has had fresh fuel, so no worries there. I had stable in the fuel when storing it, but it has since been used up.

The vrod muscle is known to have a backfire in the rear cylinder when using a power commander.... a problem each of us on the 1130cc.com forums experience and have been trying to fix.

The A model vrod is experiencing a problem due to trusting an engineer of the pipe I purchased (F.A.I.C.) whom I purchased the "custom" map from. Apparently everything is great except for cruising speeds, which the pipe is way lean. Not knowing that much about tuning, I am working with my father who tunes motorcycles at the moment to fix this dangerously lean spot in the map.

Similar problems, yes..... but the vrods have a power commander I can play with... spyder doesnt yet.

I picked up the exhaust late last year, and had no funds to pick up an air cleaner or any type of tuning device. Ran it for a while before I parked it, and never noticed the problem. It may have been due to colder temps, im not sure.

As far as the honda gaskets, what benifit do they provide over the other can am gaskets?

You can get the Juice Box, Juice Box Pro, O2 mod or a Power Commander for the Spyder-- yes they do have them but hang on to your wallet!

Honda gaskets are a good thing to do too--

This problem is very very common for those adding a different exhaust. If you add a freer flowing intake that will add to the 'problem' as well.

There's not much difference between the Power Commander and the JB pro--- in fact they can exchange maps, etc. as they are made by the same place......this was discussed some time ago-- although PC does have more available features.

Quickest and easiest solution is slap an O2 mod on... not sure JB will do enough on it's own--- but the Pro should.

Plenty of options for ya--- but many of us performance riders have found the combination of the O2 mod and JB to work really really well --- oh-- and I also have the Fuel PRessure mod from Evo--- can tweak the fuel pressure.

Does anyone have a part number for the Honda gaskets ??? Or, what do I Ask for when I walk into the dealer ???
