• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. problem with 2012 RT sm5

Questions

Hi everbody, I rode 190 mi sat- nice ride no problems. I just cleaned up the spyder did an oil check down a bit from the full line. Added a little as long as I was in there. checked oil level all good. Polished up body and started up engine. Engine ran for about 3-4 min then died--oil light came on and will not restart. Oil light indicator is on. Checked line going from tank to engine-looks fine. What happened ?? It is a 2012 RT sm5 with 1,600 mi on it.

My dealer is closed today--any help would be appreciated.

Oil light will be on when engine is not running... no oil pressure... just a thought... 190 mile trip.... out of gas???

got to have lots of juice in the battery... charge the battery or try and jump start it....

Had it battery tender for a couple hours probably going to take all night. The only thing I can think of Is I was turning switch on and off a few times to get into trunk or to set emergency brake while I was working on it . I didnt think that it would draw down the battery that much. What I cant figure out is why it started and ran for a few minutes before it killed??

Curious..!!

when you say cleaned up the spyder..what all did you do..?? Check your fuse boxes make sure they are dry and wiggle all of them and the relays. Check battery connections. Flip the kill switch a few times as well as the ignition switch. Then follow the startup and see what happens. Seems like some kind of connection problem...

The cleanup was purely cosmetic-Honda spray can and check oil. Ran for about 3 minutes then shut down. Checked my startup including Neutral and foot on brake.

Did you check for loose battery terminals? Common reported issue. This sure sounds like a battery issue to me. Especially when you hit the starter and the display goes out.

What stumps me is why it would run for 3-4 minutes then suddenly shut down. Especially when I ran it all day Saturday without incident. I put it on trickle charge for hours yesterday and have power in lights dash but will not start.

a trickle charger will not bring it up. I would check the voltage and see it standing voltage is at least 12.8 or more. keep the voltage meter on and turn the key on and see if it drops. Sounds like the battery has a loose connection and just happened to loose voltage while running and died. the computer will shut down on low voltage. The actual battery connections are a little hard to get to but you can pop the black panel under the seat near the left passenger grab bar and get to the negative terminal and from under neath the bike you can reach up to the positive one. Like I said, it is hard to get to without removing the tupperware on the side of the bike. NOT hard to do but seems difficult if you've never done it. I'm thinking battery or loose connection on battery. Also check the remote posts to be sure they are tight. (at least they are easy to get to under the seat).
Good luck

:agree: If your computer is rebooting but the engine is not trying to turn, you have a weak battery. And the trickle charger will not do anything if the battery is bad.
Also, since you have an SM5, try engaging the clutch while starting, even if it is in Neutral. Maybe the dash would tell you that it is in N, but the gear positioning system might not be fully reading the gears and might be stuck in 1 st or 2nd gear.
