Well the wife and I just returned from a Pre-labor Day week long ryde and it was fabulous. Our 2013 RTL performed marvelously. What a blast. We left Sacramento and headed down I5 to 156. Headed for Hollister and Highway 25. What a road, great surface, no traffic, and beautiful scenery even in the depths of our drought. When I say no traffic, I mean NO TRAFFIC. On this 60 to 70 mile run down to 198 we saw 4 other vehicles, and they were in fact, other motorcycles that we rode with for a while. From 198 we headed down 101 to Atascadero for a couple of nights with friends. On Thursday we headed down 101 to Arroyo Grande for ice cream at Doc Burnsteins Ice Cream Lab ( formerly Bernardoz) for the most awesome ice cream ever. When you are on the central coast stop in, you will not be sorry. The weather was perfect high 60s with bright sunshine and you could see forever.
Friday morning saw us leaving Atascadero down to Morro Bay and up Highway 1. This was beyond belief. Highway 1 is 100 miles from Morro Bay to Monterey all alnong the Coast of California. The views are breath taking with shear cliffs dropping to the sea on one side, and majestic mountains on the other side. This was early on the first day of a long weekend and there was no traffic heading north. Again perfect weather. We stopped to view a few hundred Elephant Seals basking on the beach and headed north past Hearst castle toward Big Sur. stopped at the Nepenthe Inn for what AAA calls one of the best burgers in Northern California and that did not disappoint. Then we headed to our next destination. We were forced to spend two nights in Monterey:yes::yes::yes:, what torture. Out to dinner with family for some just caught seafood to die for,and a great visit with Mom and Sister. Saturday we headed north to Santa Cruz for lunch on the warf at our Favorite Stagnaro Brothers, more fresh seafood!
What made this trip on a long weekend so blissful was, we left on Wednesday, and returned on Sunday and therefore no TRAFFIC! Alas as all good things must come to an end, and on Sunday it was back home to Sacramento. But get this I5 was deserted. Any of you that know that highway know how crowded that strip of asphalt gets, and we could see no one for miles. Back home to rest an recollect. What a great time. 891 trouble free miles and smiles as Bob likes to say. If you are in California try some of these roads, if you have you are probably smiling with me now. If you aren't from California, come on out and we will show you around!:yes:
