Passenger Heated Grips ... problem?

ynot9771

RT-S PE#0516
Our 10 day old RT passenger heated grips don't work. So we bring it in and they say you must be in the seat for them to work. Well in the seat or not they still don't work. Anyway they tested them and they say the temp is 84 degrees on high. The front grips are 106 degrees on low and that can be too high sometimes here in Colorado.
Anyway, 84 degrees is useless when they're needed ... feels like nothing at all in the cold. Anyone out there know what their temps are on the passenger grips.

FYI. My wife and I use 2 Gerbing jackets directly off the battery. I RARELY turn (mine) the front grips on high ... gets too hot. So while the passenger grips don't put out enough heat my wife uses a pair of Gerbing heated gloves. All the Gerbing stuff is on 2 separate thermostats ... his and hers. At no time is anything diminished or seems under powered EXCEPT the passenger heated grips which run like a $2.00 watch ... very surprising considering all the fantastic engineering in this RT.
Any help or information is greatly appreciated.

We just love our RT-S!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your help in advance,
Tony

I have not tested the passenger grips, but I agree that 84 degrees would be too low, unless riding without gloves, which I never recommend. Besides, the backs of your hands would get very cold. I thought the front heated grips werte too hot, too. On low, at an air temp of 30 degrees, I had to keep switching them on and off, with medium weight gloves. Hotter than the ones on my BMW. They are what they are, and I guess we'll learn to live with them.

Recently, done some fairly long rides in 40 degree weather and the heated handgrips worked great....no complaints. Did have to turn 'em down to the lo setting after a while.

Rear heated grips

The wife complains about the "Heated" rear grips. She says alot of the time she cannot tell when they are on. It take along time for them to warm up.

The front Grips however, get to hot for 45 deg weather on low, I keep turning them on to get some heat into the grip then turn them off, then on again when needed.

My wife is really happy about the shape of the grips. The grips on my Goldwing are way to low, she cannot come close to reaching them, so she usually does not hold on, :yikes: she just leans back, :yikes: most of the time she is asleep.:gaah:

I second the comment about the front grips being to hot on low, but, given the alternative, they're still good to have. Don't know how good the passenger grips work, the SO won't leave home at temps under 50! We do have Gerbring jacket liners and she has the gloves.

For those that are having trouble with the heated rear grips, keep in mind that they work differently than the front grips. They are not merely high or low, but continuously adjustable, like a rheostat. Once they are on, you have to hit the "+" button to raise the temp (and the "-" to lower it). I don't know if you have to hit it repeatedly or just hold it in. Not sure if this will help, but it's worth looking into.
