Passenger Comfort ???

Just wondering about the passenger comfort. I was late to notice that the back rest does not wrap around like our HD trunk/backrest combo....

Does the passenger basically hang on to the hand rails for dear life?

I am surprised that a moto this large was designed with a rear trunk/backrest that are kinda small and do not provide any visible lateral support.

I've owned a Goldwing, a Victory Vision and a HD Ultra Classic. My wife said the Spyder beats them all for comfort, hands down. And now that I've put a Corbin seat on, it's gotten even better. The bike is so stable that she is more relaxed on the Spyder than on the two wheeled bikes; I think that makes a lot of difference.

Nope, I'm so relaxed after a few miles that I'm hanging on so I don't fall asleep and fall off! :roflblack:

My son never hung on and I was hitting it pretty hard with him on the back.

We just got ours, and rode a couple hundred miles this past weekend. My wife absolutely Loves it, and felt completely secure.

I'm going to offer up a bit of a different view point. I'm 6' and my wife is 5'5". She cannot see what is ahead of her even though the passenger seat is raised. I've noticed her from day one holding on to the hand grips. I've asked her about this, and she has stated that for her she feels more secure.

I personally think that the way the passenger seat is designed that it takes a lot of passenger participation in ryding a spyder. Call me overly concerned, too cautious, or the like, but I want her to be comfortable and not be constantly concerned about what is going on. I want her to enjoy the ride.

I've noted in a couple of other threads that I would like to see either BRP or some after market arm rests that would secure the back passenger. I've noted that there have been postings by others that they have purchased arm rests, but I haven't seen how they look. I also note that one after market company was going to come up with a design for the RT, but later opted out. This company made them for the RS.

I don't want to be an alarmist, but again, I think that there should be something more for the passenger.

Thanks for letting me vent.

When I'm on the back, I'm relaxed and comfortable, but I can see over the top of my wife. When she's on the back, she has a death grip on the handles. I agree with Chris, and my wife has expressed interest (expressed is a relative term!:gaah:) in arm rests. Yes, it takes the passenger's help in riding the spyder, but when it's a surprise (as in not enough time to warn her), I don't want her leaving the scene.

My wife tends to fall asleep, especially at night after a long day in the saddle. I know it when her head slouches forward and bangs me in the head.

But on the nomad with the HD trunk and backrest, she is pretty secure, it would be tough for her to fall off. And on the Ural, well, where is she going to go! :)

But on the Spyder it looks like if the passenger nodded off, even for a moment and you happen to be in the middle of a turn, they could fly off the bike, left or right.

You ask two questions, passenger comfort is very very good. We went on a ride yesterday, and after raising the floorboards, it was extremely comfortable.

Second question you ask is it safe or are you hanging on for dear life?

I suppose for a bike that doesn't lean they could have forgone the hand rails, but I think it is one extra layer of assurance. Really with us two up yesterday, it was
like she wasn't even there.. I know she was because she kept telling me to turn the music down.

I myself won't ride when I am tired, so a day longer than 8 hours in the saddle won't be for us. 24 hours in a day, 8 for sleep 8 to play and 8 to ryde- balance is the key:thumbup:

I have read about people sleeping while riding, not so sure that is or should be a good thing. My wife is my extra set of eyes, and also handles the waves to other motorcyclists if
I don't cuz I am playing with the navigation. I did ask her if she can see over me, I am 6'2" & she is 5'8" and she can't see over but can see the GPS and everything else. She does not always
grasp the hand rails and feels very secure, that back rest ain't going no where:2thumbs:

I guess I'll add another 2 cents. As far as comfort my wife has said it is outstanding. She really likes the feel.

On the hand rail issue, she still is a bit uneasy. We talked about this thread, and one of her comments was what is the size of the passenger. My wife is 5' 5" and weighs a whopping 117 lbs. Perhaps with her slender size there is some "sloshing" going on back there when I make turns? (be kind fellas)

Thanks again for all of the replies.

Our local dealer still has not returned my calls-emails. Even after Can-Am pinged me as to whether a dealer had called back (and I replied no), I have not heard a thing. Figured they would be hot to sell these bad boys.

My wife is very comfortable on the back of our RT but she normally holds onto the passenger handgrips. Like others have said, she cannot see over me to see what is coming up so she likes being ready for anything. Sudden maneuvers to avoid road hazards are what bother her the most.

That said, she still considers the RT the most comfortable touring machine we have ever owned by far. I agree with her. I just need to work on getting her to do the driving some of the time so I can sit on the back and enjoy the scenery. She has it too easy.
