Parking Brake Problem - Resolved

Bootie

New member
As I was headed to Chicago from California my Parking Brake quit.:dontknow: I had the dealer in Hayward, CA look at it and he found the cable had come off the front pulley. He said that if it came off again that I would need a new pulley. He put it back together but it quit again within 1/2 hour. I next had the folks at the Chicago Event take a look. He said that the cable was bad (sticky) and he lubed it and put it back on the pulley. It quit again within 15 min. I finally took a look when I got home and took some pics.
The problem is that when the parking brake returns to the "off" mode, the cable doesn't retract into its housing. The next time the brake is set, the cable comes off the front pulley.:(
I lubricated the heck out of the cable and it seems to be working now.
The problem is either the dirty cable that sticks or the helical spring on the rear pulley is not strong enough to retract the cable.

When I had this problem I was told it was out of adjustment. That may be the case but here's how I solved my issue.

Parking Brake Problem - Better Fix

The earlier fix for my parking brake didn't work too well. As I was trying to come up with a better fix, I came up with the idea shown below.
Simply drill a hole in the front pulley about 3/4 in. behind where the cable attaches. Then run a Nylon Tie through the hole and around the cable. Snug it down. There ya go:clap:That cable ain't coming out (unless/when the tie breaks but then you can just install a new one)
The pic on the left shows the brake cable after it popped out. The pic on the right shows the nylon tie fix.

Parking Brake Problem - Better Fix

As I was discussing this issue with Lamont,:chat: it occurred to me that you could drill a little hole in the pulley and the run some wire (safety wire would be best) through the hole and up over the cable. Then twist the ends together. This fix should last until you cut the wire in order to remove the cable from the pulley.:lecturef_smilie:

Those are all good ideas for the fix. The problem with mine was the plastic ears that hold the barrell were worn nearly away. The fix for mine was a new pulley, that means in another few thousand miles it will need replaced again.

2012 RT Limited with Parking Break Problem

I'm new here and a new Spyder Owner. I've had my RT Limited 4 days and it now has 214 miles on it. This morning I got the parking break warning light issue and lost my parking break. After digging around the web, I found the post here discussing it. I'm not sure why Can-Am hasn't resolved this recurring parking break problem yet. It apparently spans at least three model years now. It makes one wonder if they even care.

Anyway, following the suggestions found here I made the below mods.

Here is the side panels removed from my new $30,000 purchase. Not something I was expecting this soon.

This one is after I put the cable back in the pulley. It was plenty tight. I had to pull pretty hard to get it to reach into the slot.

This picture shows the new guard I added with the parking break off. I was pretty lucky. I found this bracket in my junk drawer left over form some long ago disassembled thing. It was PERFECT!

This one shows it with the break set on.

Now I need to go to the dealer had have the error light cleared. :sour:

your missing the seal off the end of your cable

I had the same problem on my 2011 RT, BRP issued a fix for this,a better spring on the rear wheel parking brake hub. The dealer replaced my spring last summer and I have not had it come off the front pulley since.

Yea, but wouldn't you expect the 'new' spring to be factory installed on the 2012 models if the dealers were fixing 2011's and earlier last year? This was my point, BRP hasn't put any effort into a real solution. If a similar percentage of people had parking break issues on their new F150's or Cameros over the same period of time don't you think Ford or GM would have solved it already?

I may do just that and remove the angle bracket next time I tear the side panels off.
