Paint finish.

Three weeks ago bought a 2015 Red Spyder RT-S. I washed & waxed it after getting it home from the dealership. I have ridden 3,000km & I'm noticing the paint finish doesn't seem to be the quality I expected. There are scuff marks in various spots & wondering if anyone has used clear coat or any thing else to protect the paint?

Not sure...

But they have a clear coat on them. I would start by buffing out the scuff marks and using Lamonts Cleaner polishing kit or Plexus, Protect-all or even Pledge (I like the lemon scented)...

SCUFF MARKS ???????

:yikes: .... Are you washing it with BRP water or the ordinary water ??????..............Mike :joke:

SCUFF MARKS ???????...........CONTINUED !!!!!

Disregard my first post ( #3 ) :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:......Now I'll be serious.....If you have " SCUFF " marks ....it can't possibly from washing and or waxing unless you dropped the sponge or cloth and didn't rinse it thoroughly :yikes::yikes::yikes:. However because I don't TRUST dealers or the way they treat US. I have a feeling the " scuffs " were there when you purchased your Spyder.......if they are really noticeable try a more abrasive type WAX it might polish it out or jewelers polishing/rouge applied very very lightly or auto polishing COMPOUND applied EXTREMELY lightly......I doubt the Dealer would own up to this ........jmho.....Mike

The clear coat is very soft on these bikes. I would use a good quality scratch remover instead of any compound. These products are available at any car care store or places like Walmart.

Going to Try a Few New Waxes

I have noticed several new scuffs on my bike since returning from spyderfest. They are mostly on the sides near the F3 access panels. It seems the clear coat is very sensitive...I think its just the nature of breaking in the bike. I am going to try a couple different waxes this weekend and see which one works the best buffing them out. I will post here which one I think works the best. While I do love Lamonster's Black Diamond, it is more of an upkeep option, it will not remove scuffs or scratches.

I am very impressed with my Spyder, the look, paint color and so on. However, the paint quality is not as good as the Japenese bikes....that tend to be perfect. Mine has a few paint runs, thin paint, some plastic deburring not completed. For the price of these :spyder2: , paint should be near perfect !

Rode my new F3 home from the dealer and my coat scratched the bike some. Disappointed. Going to put some carbon fiber wrap over it.

It is entirely possible that the scuff marks came with the Spyder compliments of the dealer. I have noticed that Spyders and bikes in general that sit on the showroom floor and are sat on by lookers get scratched and then get sold with the swirls and scratches. Many people just aren't very careful when getting on and off while looking. Also dealers have someone wash the Spyders in prep and usually the ones doing the washing are not very carefull with their washing practices. Car dealerships are even worse in my opinion.

Compared to the paint on my 2012 Goldwing, the paint is rock hard on my 14 Spyder. Some paints and years for different bikes are better/worse than others.

There are many good products for removing swirls and light scratches from vehicle paint surfaces and everyone has their own advice on what is the best so I won't add to that list. Pick a good product and start by doing working on a small area by hand to test results. There are hand held machines that will work but that will start to get pretty expensive and complicated unless you are into that sort of thing (I am). Try to avoid products that fill swirls and scratches rather than removing them. I would take some time and research some of the Detailing Web Sites for information. Detailing Bliss is a good one if you are really serious about this. For products available take a look at eShine Canada and yes autogeek is another good one. eShine is where I get most of my detailing supplies.

Good luck,

Gary
