Fight Risks's description of his problem is similar to mine, but not quite. Mine rattles like mad after I put it into gear (1st or R), but does fine in Neutral. I appreciate that someone posted how to read the codes. I'm getting the same code, but I just don't know how a throttle body problem could cause so much noise and shaking. Are you sure it's not a transmission problem?

I have a 2011 RTS SE5. I bought it used from a Harley dealer, as is, just about a week ago. It has only 6200 miles on it. I've been riding it daily to shake it down before taking it to a Spyder dealer for service. The problem started a couple days ago, about every other time I started it. Now it's twice in a row. I have an appointment for next Thursday in KC, about 130 miles away from here. Do you think it will be OK to ride there? If its transmission, I don't want it to seize up on the turnpike!

It's the throttle body, Once you get it started you should be OK, Just don't shut the engine off on the way to the dealer. ie Fill the gas tank before you start off ,So you don't have to stop on the way.

Been there done that...it is throttle body. You will notice that the revs is all over the place and you should also smell unburnt fuel. I never tried to engage gears when it is like that, the noise was way to painful to listen to. I soon realised that you cant rev or ride the problem away. Just let it idle for a bit to build some heat and shut it down and let it sit for ten or more minutes take key out and walk away (go kick something!!!!). Then start again, often it comes up normal on second try but you may have to go and kick that thing once more! I would not suggest you drive off before the idling has settled down and you don't see the code error flashing. Take the advice, fill it up and take it straight to the workshop and demand a new throttle body. Do not stop anywhere if it runs it is good. This fault had me stranded four times in the 1500 km. been in the shop for eight weeks while canam and dealer debated the issue and finally they came to the mind boggling conclusion that P1614 is the error code for a crook throttle body and that it is a known issue and the only way to resolve it is to fit new one. Spyder is coming home this weekend....if i ever see that check engine warning ever again, I will fix it with a match......

If you have to stop, use the kill switch and leave the ignition on. Tie back the lock for the seat so you won't need to unlock it if you need gas.

THROTTLE BODY

Just a heads up, you may want to make sure they have one before you even go since it's a 130 mile walk back to your house.!!!!!!!........Mike

I used the Spyder for almost 6 months with a bad throttle body. It is not a "death" issue. I even went on a 1500 mile trip without any worries. I just learned how to make it work and rode. But if anyone feels helpless because the throttle body "just might" go bad, it may be nest to stay within a few miles from your house.

:agree: I rode for about an extra 6 months with mine doing that every once in a while...
If you are very observant; you can tell upon startup when the Bike just isn't going to co-operate...
But this one is a big: SEE YOUR DEALER item... Good Luck!

Some have limped along for quite a while, while others have failed completely in very short order. If you only have issues with limp mode, which disappear after a restart or a few, you may be able to ride a while. If you are having the shaking, oxygen sensor failure codes, or other serious issues, I would not hesitate (and I would not ride any more than necessary). Sudden, complete throttle failure or serious engine damage could result.

I had multiple codes pop up again this morning... :gaah: The bike even did it's best "Shake, rattle and roll" dance routing too!
Multiple attempts to re-start it reminded me that IF you see a flashing red warning light in the tach; about opposite the parking brake indicator that's in the speedo; the bike ain't gonna move... :yikes:
I sweated it out until I saw that red warning light stop bugging me; then I was able to go on about my chores...
Bike's heading into the shop this afternoon!
Codes:
P1120
P2620
P16C7
P0000 (?)

P0000 means "No active failure code" Not sure why it appears sometimes with the others. I suspect it means a code that was there had gone inactive by the time the fault register went to record/display it.

That's kind of what I had thought...
The bike literally went dead in the water at 35 mph; by the time I coasted into a nearby parking lot and had a chance to thumbwrestle with the buttons, that's what popped up.
I know that it's a throttle position sensor issue, but the P16C7 is a mystery... :dontknow:

P16C7 - Throttle valve plausibility check failed. Check for ECM fault.

I have an appointment at the dealer in KC. I told them the code and they also say its the throttle body. I assume the previous owner never attended to any service bulletins, so they'll have to look at everything.

they recommended not riding it there (130 miles), so I'll trailer it. :( Darn! I really wanted to ride there. :sour:

On the bright side it is under warranty until 7/3/2013.

If it's only throwing the P1614 error code; you'd probably be able to sneak the ride in...
The dealer will always want to err on the side of caution; they have to!

Mine did the same thing when in neutral......any other gear and it shook/banged/clanged etc. If you push the correct buttons to see what code it is throwing the bike calms down. Until you restart it. It needs the Throttle Body replaced if it throws any one of the 4 codes. Mine just did it again a few minutes ago when the dealership came to pick it up.

P.S. Fliight Risk is female ;)

Gender can be a tough thing to figure out on the 'net...
