Other brands verses the O.e.m. Tires from BRP?

anyone try putting other brand tires on the Spyders than to ones that
it comes with? Like the Kumho Ecsta AST'S?;)

Hello Spyderman

If you search using the term "Tire" you will find hundreds of posts on this topic. Lot's of different suggestions on tire brands, pros and cons, etc.

Personally, I'm going with the General Altimax on my rear as soon as this OEM tire is finished. It looks like I have another 7-8,000 to go on it.

Kumho Ecsta AST

I have a 2013 RTS I purchased in July with 6700 miles on it and the original rear Kenda was about shot. I got about another 1000 miles and decided it was unsafe to go any longer.

I replaced the Kenda garbage with a Kumho Esta AST and can not say enough the handling improvement is unbelievable, totally eliminated the wallowing feel the original tire had. We live in the Ozark mountains where all roads are very curvy and you would not believe the improvement. With the Kumho my RTS handles better than the 2015's we test rode at Spyderfest, at least as well as the new F3. The Kumho has about 2000 miles now and shows no wear.

Kumho going on Wednesday morning. Got 7600 miles out of the OEM Kenda. Must have got one of the soft compound ones. Only $81 for the Kumho at Discount Tires for my '98 VW Golf aka '14 RTL. Keep in mind that some dealers will only mount an OEM. My dealer does not have a problem with the Kumho. It is also directional like the Kenda.

Your right the tread pattern on the Kuhmo looks almost identical to the OEM Kenda and is available in the 225/50 R15 same as original.
Good that you mentioned the VW Golf, I read somewhere that Discount tire will not sell a tire if they know its for a Spyder. When I ordered mine from Discount Tire I told them it was for a Scion as I had seen one that had this size, I got a call from Discount questioning the Scion which I confirmed and he said it sounds like its for a CanAm.

 What did you say to him, when he as much as called you a liar? :dontknow:
I would have immediately demanded to speak to his Supervisor... :gaah:

By now I assume you've used the search method as suggested. I went with the General Altimax as well. 215/60/15. Great riding tire and the speedometer is now correct too.

My experience matches the above post almost exactly. We got abouit 6,000 on the OEM Kenda and it was done. The Kumho Ecsta AST has been on for about 1,000 miles now and the feel is noticeably better. Can't speak to mileage but I believe all the '13s got the soft Kenda.

BTW, I believe the Kumho is rated for a higher load so I'm running lower pressure in it, 26-28, with improved feel. Again, can't speak to longevity yet.

I'm running a Kumho now also...
(3,000 miles on it so far...)
The sidewall feels a lot stiffer, so I've reduced the tire pressure to 25 psi... I may try 24 psi in the Spring. :D
The handling sure seems to be pretty comparable to the Kenda; time will tell the tale!

Holy Buckets!!!!!

Got my Kumho installed today. I could tell the difference for the better just driving out of the dealer lot to the street. What an unbelievable ride home. The cornering is great. I am taking a trip this coming week and can hardly wait. The Kumho is a lot better than the Kenda. Unless Kenda makes a car tire the size that fits the Spyder, I will not go back.

I have 11,000 miles on my Kumho. Probably another 3 or 4000 left on it. It gives up a wet traction compared to the Kenda but it is overall a pretty good tire. I only got 7500 out of my original Kenda.

Its unfortunate that that Toyo is no longer available. I went with the Yokohama S-Drive and was very pleased as are several others I know that went with this tire.

Unless it is not available in the States, I had no problems getting one here in Ontario Canada from a tire dealer who told me he could get more. Also, although the S Drive is a good tire, when I researched it I saw that it was not available in the Spyder's original 225/50r15 size that I wanted to maintain. :dontknow:

Pam,

I am running the General Altimax RT 43 on the rear tire of my spyder. I do not notice a difference from the Kenda tire.

My spyder handles well on dry, wet, gravel, dirt roads. I replaced the Kenda which had 5,284 miles. Now I have 10,300 miles ( I have 5,016 roughly on the rear tire) Tire size that I am running is : 215/60R 15.

What tire size will you be using?

Deanna
