Orange screen! Oh no!

Newbie here-this is my first bike. I bought a '13 STL 4 months ago and have put 2500 miles on so far with no issues. Then this am, stopped at a Walmart, and when I got back on, it was stuck in 1st gear and when I asked for Reverse, I got to see the dreaded Orange Screen of Death and the words Transmission Failure. :( Got the codes - P0902, P0973, P0976. Tried a few times to get it in gear but no go. Wouldn't go into neutral. Then I tried a little revving of the engine and it popped into neutral. After that, it went into reverse so I could get out and I got home with no shifting issues. Now I'm a little freaked out- anyone else get this problem? Any suggestions?

Had a similar issue with my 15 RT limited a few days ago.. put on the brake, turned it off, took the key out, walked a distance away with the key in hand. The computer reset itself.. when I restarted it.. it seemed to go through some electronic gyrations and has been fine since.
The codes cleared, etc.

Orange Screen of Death

I you am confused, the first statment said, this is your first bike and that you had put 2500 miles onit. The follow up statement said you serviced the bike at 9300 miles, used?

I have found that shutting down the bike after a hard stop will not allow the gearbox to shift down correctly, and as has been said oil level wrong. If the oil level is correct, then a simple reset of the system is all you need.

Good Luck

i read that as Dstrat buying their first bike, a used 13STL with 6800miles already on the clock, and has now put another 2500 on the clock, equaling 9300miles when a service was performed, Aracknoid. Are you seeing something I'm not?

Just had my 9300 mile service done last week. So SHOULD be ok.

There's three things you need to bear in mind about this sort of problem with the V-twin Spyders:

Firstly, the V-twins use oil as you ride them, so you really should check your oil level after each ride just to be safe - it doesn't take being all that much low in oil level to have an adverse impact on your gear selection!

Secondly, even if it's the afternoon of the day you had the service done, are you positive that whoever did the service put the right oil quantity & volume of oil into your Spyder?? Did you check that they did? Cos if you didn't physically check & they put just a tad too little in there, it doesn't take being all that much low in oil level to have an adverse impact on your gear selection!

Thirdly, with the V-twin Spyders, it really doesn't take being all that much low in oil level to have an adverse impact on your gear selection! By being as little as a cupful of oil below the optimum oil level (& it's quite possible for a V-twin to have used that much oil after maybe a coupla hundred miles of spirited riding, especially if it's getting close to the next scheduled oil change &/or the oil is carrying a fairly high soluble contaminant load!!) you can get difficult gear changes, slow gear selection from neutral (maybe even NO gear selection possible from neutral), or pretty much exactly the sorts of issues you described.....

Given that all those codes you told us came up can stem from clutch or selector issues, & could occur because the solenoids, circuit, &/or controller just got hot - like any/all of them would if you were a little low on oil..... when you got that orange screen & couldn't find a gear, was your first step to check the oil level?? Probably shoulda been!! :sour:

If the cause of all your troubles was just that the oil level was low, & you've since topped it up to the right level using the correct checking technique (without adding too much & causing an overflow into the air cleaner!) then you probably shouldn't have any more problems if you keep the oil at the correct level. It seems that at least initially, MOST of this sort of gear selection issues arise from low oil levels, & thankfully, that's got an easy fix, even if it's a bit of a pain to check your oil every ride/coupla hundred miles!

I really hope you found this one had an easy fix & you got it sorted already. :)

Don't forget to follow the owners manual exactly to check the oil, it is not straightforward like other bikes. If the serviceman didn't do it the brp way, it's probably low on oil.

No, I checked the oil (when the bike was warm) and it was full. That wasn't the issue, I guess. Anyway, the codes cleared and I've been out this weekend with it and had no problems.

It is obviously not an oil level problem. Failure to shift because of low oil level usually generates no fault codes or orange screen. Also the oil needs to be a quart or more below the add line before you start problems.

The fault codes you posted point to a wiring problem with TCM Transmission Control Module and 3 of the solenoid valves. There is a connector according to the wiring diagram going to those 3 solenoid valves. I would inspect that one first. It may be loose or water has gotten into it.

Orange screen! Oh no!

My first Spyder was 2010 RTs SE5. it was the same engine as yours, 998 V twin. I had to add a pint of oil every 500 miles otherwise orange screen and limp home mode. I always carried two quarts of oil all the time. Now I'm riding 2015 RTs. don't worry about the oil, or limp home mode anymore.
