Oil Question

My dealer is using the BRP Semi Synthetic oil. I have a service plan with my bike. What is a good Semi Synthetic Oil I can by off the shelf and not be ripped off by the dealer or do you recommend staying with what they use. I need to add some oil and in between services.

Amsoil is fully synthetic and the best option for the Spyder. Pricey but worth it. There are several Spyderlovers sponsors who sell it. I get mine from Baja Ron. If you just want to top it off go ahead and use the BRP oil available at the dealer.

Dealer wants $11.95 qt for the BRP Semi Synthetic. I guess I best stay with what they are using until the service plan has expired and I start changing my own. Will probably go to full synthetic then. Hate paying that much for oil tho.

I agree...then get Amsoil...oh no here we go again.

:agree: And i cringe when i hear that word ripoff, I mean does anyone realize the over head $$$ a dealer has just to open his doors every day, ??.......

I use the can-am oil, don't want to screw anything up. Roadster is too expensive to go cheap with maintaining it. IMHO

From everything I have read, Castrol is the maker of BRP oil and also the only company, AFAIK, that makes a Blend. You can use any brand motorcycle oil rated JASO MA2 to supplement dealer oil, or replace it when you decide to do it yourself, and would probably improve the Blend you have in it now.

There are other blends out there. My Ford truck specified a blend. I don't know of any other motorcycle oils that are blends, though.

I don't care who you are $11.95 a qt. is a rip off in my book. My last bike I was using full synthetic Rotella T6 for less than $20.00 a gallon. And to address the overhead the dealer has, on my first trip there they had 12 sales people on the floor talking and not one asked if we need help so we left and went to another dealer to look at the Spyders. I don't have a problem spending $7-$8 for quality oil which is out there. I just don't want to add an oil that is NOT compatible with what they are using in the bike.

There are several. Elf makes a blend, as well as Lubro Moly (which is what I run BTW). Both are available on the web. Brad-Penn is a blend and made 100% in America with American crude if that floats your boat. I've used a lot of Brad-Penn in various bikes. Always great results, smooth shifting, and acceptable used oil analysis. East of Ohio, you'll find it at NAPA, it's on the web also. To the OP, any of the popular oils at the chain stores is fine for topoff: Valvoline and Castrol are available at nearly any Advance, AutoZone, Pep Boys, or O'Reilley's. You mention RotellaT6.. That's fine for top off, and probably great for a full fill. 5w40, meets JASO MA, and a great slack wax base stock, what's not to like? Anything you add is going to be compatible, even top shelf synthetics like Redline, no worries there. You can check oilchangekits.com and eurosyntheticoils.com for more info on Elf, Lubro, and Brad-Penn.

:agree: Harpo. As far as overhead, I recently owned a class A motor home that came from a dealership that had no less than 240 service bays. Yes that is right 240.. I never paid more than $4 a quart for motor oil. (Good thing because it held 44 qrts) Pretty sure their overhead was more than most BRP shops. $12 oil, $50 HD T-shirts, I guess it all depends what we want to spend the dollars on for all the fun we get in return. :dontknow:

Unless a dealer chimes in it is hard to say where the over pricing starts. I know this, I bought my $450 dollar leather Can-Am jacket for $200 from my dealer after it sat around too long. Clothing has larger markups but lets get real, lol. Anything with BRP stamped on it is off the charts for what ever reason. I recently bought most of the chrome parts for my RT from one our sponsors here that sells Can-Am Vehicles and accessories. I paid over 30% less over all including shipping from out of state. They said they had bought out a lot of the parts from BRP with special pricing which they also discounted again to me. Odd business model but seems to be par the course for recreational vehicles. As long as we keep buying it works, lol.
