Oil Level

Just put 2000 mi (since last service) on my 2013 RTL. Decided to check the oil right after shutting down and there is no oil on the dip stick. I had checked the oil around 1000 and it appeared find. Now appears bone dry.

There have been no signs of ant leakage. Is this normal?

So if it is not even on the dipstick it will take the whole quart?

Add half a quart and that will likely bring it between the add and full. Then your good to go. The 998 engine is a bit oil hungry. Check again in 500 miles.

My 2012 RT does not use that much oil. Usually about a qt between oil changes,every 4500 mi.

operating temperature, start engine
and let it run for at least 30 seconds.
NOTE:
Running engine for at least
30 seconds allows the suction oil
pump to drain the oil from the engine
crankcase back into the oil tank. Not
carrying out this step could result in
overfilling the engine oil.
4. Stop engine."


I used to come in from a decently long ride, park the bike (set the brake), and let it idle while I pulled the body panel, and found a rag for wiping the dipstick. That would normally be FAR more than the minimum suggested 30 seconds... :thumbup:

So the Spyder is at normal operating temp. I started for the 30 seconds. Shut it down and checked. Still not on dipstick.

You don't need BRP oil. There is plenty you can use. Do a search and you will find more than you want to read. Also you need to be sure that your motor is at operating temp. Not the coolant but the oil. You need to ride at least 7 miles to get it there.

You can get a quart of Valvoline 4T 10W40 full synthetic motorcycle oil at most walmart stores. It meets all the BRP requirements. Find it with the motorcycle accessories, not the motor oil.

Sounds like a lot. My '13 RT uses about 1/2 quart between oil changes. I check it and tire pressure every 500 miles.

You need to ride the Spyder for a good bit - say 20-30 miles - go home, park, set the parking break and - most important - do not shut down the Spyder! Let it idle for 30 seconds while you take off your gloves, helmet, etc., pull the panel, and then shut down the Spyder. I usually remove/insert the dipstick 3 or 4 times, as the first couple of times there will be (or should be) foaming oil on the dipstick. If you still have nothing showing on the dipstick, add 1/2 quart of oil as others said and check again. You do not have to restart the Spyder and let it idle when you do this. I check once a week, but that's just me. Seems like the 2013 998 engines use more oil than other model years.

A quart every 1~2k is quite a bit. My 993 uses about 1/2-3/4 quart at 5,000 miles. I use Amsoil so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. I know Amsoil does not foam like the BRP product. If nothing else, it makes it easier to get an accurate reading on the dip stick.

That's how I do mine as well. Come home from a ride...Let her sit and idle while I open the garage, find a rag, and pull the side panel. Then I shut it down and pull the stick. Have learned to keep it halfway up the stick rather than at the full mark to avoid blowby into the air box

Just got back from ride on new to me RT.........checked the oil and it was all the way up the dipstick......looked in with a flashlight and saw oil near the top of the tank.........it looks like oil and not foam.

thoughts..........road...let it idle for 30 seconds and checked it...

Did you have the oil & filter changed at the dealer? The reason I asked is
a lot of the dealers/techs go by their manuels & this will be to much oil in
the engine. Had a bad experience with those guys once on warrenty work.
Got home & went to check the oil (1330) as I loosened the oil cap the oil
starts to ease out a little so I tightened the cap & let the engine cool for a
while, found my old nine quart catch pan & drained the oil, they had put
eight quarts in the engine. I changed the filter & put in the correct five
quarts of oil no problem since. Ron's filters & oil You can't beat the
combo. Fast service,good price all with a kind word & a smile.

So the tech at the shop told me ryde it for about a half hour, shut it down and let it sit for 10 min, then check oil. I said what about the 30 sec run and he said no if you do that you need to let it sit another 10 min.

Using Amsoil for the first time. As Ron says, no foam like with the BRP oil. Almost 3000 miles and have not had to add oil. With the BRP I would probably have added 1/4 to 1/2 qt. 2012 RT SE5. I have had the issue with our dealer over filling the oil, too.
