At 550 mile checked oil it was at the min mark. Added a pint or so to get to full line. THIS CANT BE NORMAL:banghead:
I warmed engine shut off waited a minute checked just like manual says.

Do you know if it was full to start with? Most manufactures will say a quart of oil every 1000 miles is norm.
That being said mine did not drop from the full mark after 3000 miles and talking to another member he told me that his has remained full and no oil consumption.

Usually any engine will burn some oil and with your engine not broke in and the rings not seated yet I would imagine it burning little more.

You need to check it after rydin' it to get up to full temp. Not just a quick start and check. I have 2200 miles on my RT and looks like it has not used a drop of oil. Still right near the full mark. I think that's consistent with most 2014 RT owners.

I always check it right after a long ryde.....I park it in the garage, idle it for 30 seconds, shut it off and walk back to it with a paper towel to check it...it sits about 30 seconds from the time I shut it off to the time I check it that way....works great for me....give it a try.

BTW...my 2012 RT Limited used (and leaked) some oil. I added some every so often to make sure it was in operating range. So far, the 2014 RT is not using any oil and have not seen a drop on the floor! :D

Most reports that we have heard so far is no oil usage on the RT's. The advice about was it full to start with and check after the motor is at operating temperature--(a half hour ride or more)--is good.

Relax..!!

just keep an eye on it. Agree that its a good idea to check it coming in from a long ryde while the engine is at running temp....

After my 600 mile service had to add 1 quart over time. This got less and less as the miles went on. After my 4600 mile service I am at 7500 miles now and only have added about 1/3 a quart so far.

YOur description of what you did clearly doesn't match what's in the book...

As JL mentioned; the bike HAS to be up to full operating temperature... Take it for a twenty mile ride!
When you get back home; let the bike idle for at least 30 seconds before shutting it off.
(Use this time to go find a rag, some oil, and lift the seat...)
Shut it down, pull the dipstick, clean it off, re-insert it fully, and THEN take your reading!
(Mine hasn't used a drop in over 1300 miles.)

Remember the '14 is diff Spyder from earlier years.

I find it very important to remind folks that the '14 is a different machine in so many ways. And oil consumption, or lack thereof, seems to be one of those.. My '10 liked about 10 oz of oil every 800-900 miles from the get go.
The '14...no oil used at 3000 service. Checked yesterday at 5300 miles...no oil used. Which seems to be fairly consistent with what I read here.
Now as to your '14 needing oil...:agree: with other posts...are you "doing it by the manual"...otherwise you are guaranteed to NOT get an accurate read. If you are, then you will need to pursue oil usage if it continues as it does not appear to be the norm for '14's...
Have a great day...

My next question would be, if it wasn't checked in the proper manner and oil was added when not really needed, is it now over filled?

It has always been my understanding that too much oil is not a good thing. ???

Upon reading my question and Bob D's response, perhaps I didn't phrase it very well so I'll try again. If the OP didn't check the oil level in the correct method and that made it look like it was low and if that was a false reading and was actually full had it been checked by the method described by BRP, then adding a pint or more would over fill the oil reservoir. If there is now more than the required amount of oil, will that harm the Spyder? All accounts suggest that the new 1330 is not burning oil. I was always under the impression that significantly too much oil in a motor was a bad thing. Of course that raises the question, how much is too much. Hope this makes sense.

Gary

Thanks for a bit of clarification! :D
Too much oil isn't a GREAT thing...
Too LITTLE oil is definitely a BAD thing!
I believe that the bike will blow the excess oil up into the airbox... Messy; but not an engine-killer!
