• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

O.k. This isn't my first time at oil changing. Its nice having Spydee jacked, not burning my arms on the pipes, pleasant weather etc. etc.

The manuel says to torque the oil plugs to 15 ft lbs, 20 N.m. I always use Nm so not confused by inch lbs vs foot lbs. Educated elbow knows what 20 N.m. is and these oil plugs are way too high. Hubby got the oil reservoir cracked. The crack was VERY loud.

So here I sit, waiting for Hubby to get back from his out and about. Scared of stripping the crank case plug. :gaah::gaah::gaah:

So glad I got the Dimples.

Thanks for straightening things out. Was looking at my torque wrench and thought is said 15 in lbs at 20 nm.

In the light is says 170 in lbs at 20 nm. Have the dimples in and torqued them to 20 nm. Big difference from what the plugs were grunted in at.

It seems to me that it ALWAYS takes a lot of effort to break loose the oil drain plugs on my :spyder2:. I now I don't put them in that tight, but they always come out hard.

I would radder have them come out hard, then come out when you don't
want them to. But seriously the Copper washer act's as a lock washer and
it will set in and grip more than you think.

That is normal with a crush-type washer, as well as a ferrous plug (or screw) screwed into an alloy casing. It almost always takes more torque to unseat the plug than it does to seat it. There is method in theis madness...nothing will destroy an engine faster than losing a drain plug.
 
Thanks Y'all for explaining the why's to me. It all makes sense now.

My other bike never gave me this type of grief. She would rattle something off now and then, but never the drain plugs. Had the allen heads on the plugs and could always get them out without angst.

Learning Spydee is a different beast inside and out. Have bolt heads on the plugs now so I put a cheater bar on and crack 'em out myself. Have them torqued to 20 nm. Looking forward to the next oil change to see if the new plugs are easier.

It just riles me to have to rely on someone else's muscle to get the job done.:gaah:
