• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Not riding Spyder due to lockdown Re COVID

Hi All", I am not riding the Spyder much because we are in lockdown here in Australia. I pray for those people who are infected with it to recover. I just start the Spyder up once a week and let it idle for 5 minutes

Regards Peter

NOOO!! :gaah: Don't do that unless you want to kill your battery!! nojoke

Regardless of which model Spyder you have, repeated starts and short running times at low revs like that are DEFINITELY NOT GOOD for your battery! :lecturef_smilie:

Unless you start AND RUN your engine for about 30 minutes MINIMUM at 'road ryding revs' then you'll be taking more charge out of the battery with each start than you'll be putting back in just 5 mins of run time, even less if that running is at idle where there's not really enough revs to do anything much more than juuust keep the engine running, with nothing left to spare for charging zip!! And if your Spyder has the V-Twin motor, it doesn't have an alternator, it's only got a 'limited output' magneto, so those short runs will be even worse for it, especially if you aren't running it at or above about 4000 rpm!

If you can't run your Spyder at 'road ryding revs' for 30 minutes or more each time you start, it's better just to leave it alone! :lecturef_smilie: If you have a 'smartcharger' type battery tender or a charger with a 'float & maintenance' feature, you could leave it connected up to that; but if you don't have one of those, either take the battery right out or just leave the engine off!

Stay Healthy, Practice Safe Social Distancing, and maintain Good Hand Hygiene, and with any luck, you'll be back out there with your knees in the breeze before next year! :ohyea:

I been riding the heck out of mine. Our governor said that hunting, fishing, bike riding, boating, running, and walking are essential activities, and they are allowed during the lockdown, so long as the people who participate are maintaining the 6 foot required distance between themselves. I don't stop anywhere except the gas pump. I pay at the pump and wear a disposable glove to handle the pump nozzle.

What you are doing

:agree: with Peter .... there is no benefit from doing this ...... and let me add this is promoting rust in the exhaust and probably in the engine...... heating and cooling cycles for metal parts promotes rust - period ..... Mike

:agree: x3. With Peter and BK. A battery tender between the shut down period should be more than sufficient.

When I moved from Alaska to Arkansas (4000 miles) last summer, it took 70 days for the bikes to arrive from AK. None were even on a battery tender and all three started right up. I think your going to be okay here.

Just seem wrong to me also---- as an idle fuel/air mixture is very rich. This thins the oil on the cylinder wall exposing it to wear--- along with all the other reason given above. Just go ryde.

Hi Peter", I have decided to ride it to work during week that will clock up about 3 hours on the road,

Regards Peter

As long as that ryding is in '30 min or more' stints, that'll be a whole lot better for your Spyder PeterRT. Probably better for you too!! :ohyea: I find that Not Ryding is a Health Hazard, for Me AND for my Spyder! :2thumbs:

PeterRT and PeterAawen,
Do say "G'day mate" to my friend Jerry. He's stuck in a quarantine hotel overlooking Sydney harbor tonight, but driving to Albury tomorrow and on to Mount Gambier day after. (They flew over in March).
He's promised me he'll be replacing his US RT with an Aussie RT as they're moving back to SA for good. He should be commuting around the Mount area and looking for other Ryders in a fortnight or so.
Has in-laws in Elizabeth. Took us to Morialta, Cleland, KI and 12 Apostles last year. Best trip ever. Can't wait to come back.

There's lots of worse places to be :ohyea: even if he can't get out to see the sights of Sydney - some are just a bit over-rated anyway, so no real loss - besides, the Harbour's the biggest attraction! ;) I do hope he's got a good view of the Harbour! :2thumbs:

As for saying G'day, will do!

When he gets that far, there's a few 'local' SpyderRyders around the Mount, and some of us from further on into SA head down that way fairly often too. He should look into joining the OzSpyderRyders.com Forum once he gets settled (costs $5 to cover the site hosting & admin fees, but IMHO, well worth it! ) Thru that Forum we should be able to get him in touch with the locals & vice versa; the pretty good Can-Am Service mob who are in Naracoorte (just up the road a bit from the Mount, maybe a tad over an hour's ryde?! ;) ); and keep him up to date on any rydes we might be doing that he could be interested in joining us for. :2thumbs:

But how come you visited my back yard and didn't gimme a yell?!? :dontknow: It's not even 30 mins from my place to Cleland, and if you went there and to the Great Ocean Road, regardless of if you flew or drove between Adelaide and the Mount, we most likely literally HEARD you go past, only didn't realise it was you?! :gaah: So close, but why didn't you call?!? :banghead:
