• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. New permanent air filter

Bought the permanent air filter from Evo.

Dealer called while installing it and asked about the suggestion to pull the tubes to the airbox. They have never done any after market.

I told him to go ahead since I assume more air is better.

Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks for your replies. Read both forums and have so many conflicting ideas its quite confusing.

I do have the Hindle and even though I am not clear how much more flow it allows it is logical that more in would help performance with more out.

I have had permanent filter in all vehicles I have ever owned.

i forgot to add that it accerates better with baffles on at low rpm off the line due to higher pressure inside the airbox but once spyder gets rolling, better without the baffle.
if you do not have plans to add ken's race air flow, i think mmg's cold air intake will be worth the money, granted you don't have fog lights.

When we got that Evoluzione Performace Air Filter, we pulled those airbox tubes out but the noise was too much so we put them back in. IMO, it works just fine with the tubes still in the airbox.

bjt: one thing I didn't notice was an increase in noise with the $89 cool air intake.

Can't say I notice any significant change in how my Spyder runs but my Spyder ran great.

I do however notice almost unbearable heat rising up now from the side panels. This I never had. The engine temp is normal so I am wondering is this because I had the snorkels removed? Without the snorkels to the airbox does that heat now just rise up to the rider?

I am sorely tempted, if the snorkels are to blame, to ride back to the dealer tomorrow and have them reattached.

Though for winter this would definitely keep me deiced. lol

Advice appreciated.

I would venture a guess as to the fact that this is coincidental, and your Y-pipe gaskets are shot. The only thing removing the air tubes could do is slightly change the direction of air flow under the Tupperware, and maybe suck a little more air into the intake, so it doesn't cool under the hood as well. Both effects would be tiny, if measurable, I think.

I had the 600 mile service today. Would they have messed with that? Because this was not an issue before I gave it to the shop.

Shouldn't have, but I'd notify them and have them check. What did your temp gauge read at the time, how fast were you going, and is the fan running at temps of five bars up?

Temp gauge was midrange where it has always been. If the engine temp had spiked I would have taken notice. I was at highway speeds originally but coming home from dinner later it still was very hot when I got home. Not sure about the fan because I don't think I can hear it.

No, this heat is pretty much center over the airbox. I just went out to the bike and its still real hot there. That's why I made an assumption that the snorkels not attached were the cause.

Looks like a long trip back to my dealer is going to be required. but of course its Labor Day weekend so probably next week.

I just can't see how removing the intake snorkels could make it hotter on the plastics for you. :dontknow: As long as they gave you back the snorkel, you can easily put it back in yourself. You just have to remove the top "Y shaped" plastic and the left and right upper cowls to get access to the airbox. Remove the top of the airbox by unsnapping the clips (7 or 8 of them) and sliding it out to the right (throttle side) of the Spyder. Remove the air filter so you can work on both sides of the snorkel opening and just pop the snorkel back in. Reverse the steps to put everything back together. I'm guessing it's a 20 - 30 minute job at most, maybe half that if you've got experience in taking those things apart. Anyways, like Scotty said, I believe it's an unrelated item that is causing the extra heat you feel.

Scotty, what is the easiest way to check if they are shot? I think they are but my dealer, during my 6,000 mile check said, "no leak".
Probably better to ask somebody who had a leak. I understand if they are real bad you will most certainly feel it! With the Tupperware off you should be able to see bad leaks, too, especially after a cold start when the condensation makes the exhaust more visible. Increased popping in the exhaust is another sign...unless the update caused it. :D

+1

You can feel the increased heat on the upper plastics by your legs. You can hear the louder exhaust note and increased backfiring no matter what tailpipe you have. With the plastics off, you can also hear the sound and feel the exhaust leaking through the gaskets.
