I installed my first mod on Spyder #2 today, with many to follow. This is a catch can for the crankcase breather including a filter. It is Kuryakyn part # 9931. The crankcase breather no long vents to the air box. As a result, I should no long have oil splattered on my engine from the drain holes in the air box. This was a problem with Spyder #1.
Kuryakyn calls this part a "catch tank" and it is intended for motorcycles. Most of the similar items on eBay are intended for cars. My only concern is that it might be a little too small. I don't want to have to emptly the "can" any more often than I change oil. We shall see. If necessary, I will find something a little bigger.
The catch can is mounted next to the oil reservoir and can be emptied without removing more than one body panel. The hose from the engine is attached so that it goes vertical as far as possible and then down to the can. This should permit some oil to drain back down into the engine (if this is possible). The can vents gases into the atmosphere after passing through a filter. I have some reservations about how this filter will work, but time will tell.
I will report on my experiences with this mod after a couple of oil changes.
