Need Help with Helmet SunShield

I have the HJC IS-Max BT helmet with the sunshield built in.

Here is the helmet: HJC IS-Max

Here is the built in SunShield: HJC HJ-V5

I have really sensitive eyes and the shield is not dark enough for me.

I took the the shield to a window tinting shop and they said that the tint would not stick to the plastic very well. They also told me about a product called "Black Out Paint." This is typically used to darken the tail lights on a car.

Has anyone used this or know of way I can make the sunshield darker?

You could always purchase a dark smoke face shield (the outer layer) to replace the clear shield you already have. :coffee:

I don't know about the other "tinting" process. Sorry.

Just a thought. But, auto parts stores sell sheets of window tint material. This is a cheap way to add a tinted top to a completely untinted shield. Could you not purchase a sheet of this, cut a piec to fit the drop down tinted shield to darken it up?? Even place a strip of this stuff on your untinted visor would do the same thing.

A sheet of this stuff only cost about $10. You'd have lots left over for other helmets as you buy them. You may only have the one helmet now. But there will be more to come. Just sayin'. ;)

i use duc tape across top of face shield to block sun acts like a sun visor have had about 8 or 9 eye oporation so eyes are very sensative

Just me, But i don't think it's wise to have Blackout paint or window tint an inch from your eyes [fumes] especially in a closed helmet.

Have you also changed the outer faceshield to a darker one, like the HJC HJ-17? if you do, be sure to take the clear one to change out for night riding. You could also try adding a Helmet Sunblocker to the outer shield.

I'd go with the helmet sunblocker, like Scotty said. I have one and it works fine.

Well, I ordered the Sunblocker! Hopefully this will help because I'm really tired of squinting!

sunglasses under helmet....

:agree: I have very light sensitive eyes due to Keraticonus and I wear Oakly black iridium polarizing lens in Half jacket styles frames . The sun glasses work great with no fogging. Then when it gets dark I take my sun glasses off and just use the clear shield. I want to try this product out that was mentioned on this site here is the link http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/11766/1278

hope this helps :D

I guess my helmet is just to tight or hasn't been broken in yet because my sunglasses don't fit comfortably.

It may be because they are Oakleys with the wire frame and the rubber ear pieces. I may need some simple plastic ones.

I installed the Sunblocker about a hour ago and it looks great, unfortunately it's almost 9:00pm so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to try it out!

I have Oakleys too with the rubber on the frames. I have half jacket frames with straight arms and my helmet is a Shoei and it has a slot down the sides that my glasses fit into that lets my glasses rest where thjey are suppose to. My snowmobile helmet is a n HJC . My same glasses fit in but they are a tight fit I wiggle them into their location

That's awesome that the Shoei has the slot down the side specifically for sunglasses!

I think I'll try a pair similar to these: Oakley Fives

I've had my current pair for like 6-8 years. I'll probably look like a crazy man trying on the sunglasses and a helmet in the store!

I have done a lot of weird things tring to find the right sunglasses and I hate it when I have to get new sunglasses as the process starts all over again. I find that if I try to keep the lens rather small or not have the lens any bigger than necessary keeps the lens from fogging up.If the lens fogs up then I just open my visor a crack to get rid of the fog and also a breath deflector helps although I hate using them.esp in the summer. I like my Oakley half jackets for reasons mentioned above. I have also brought my helmets into the store for sunglass fittings. Unless you have an eye problem other people don't understand what we go through tring to keep our eyes comfortable.

Good Luck:D

I have really liked the "Super-Visor". It fastens to the clear face shield and works like a 3/4 helmet duck-bill. But the Super-Visor lets air flow under it so there is no lift. You just have to be careful to affix it properly to the shield. I slightly scratch the clear shield where the adhesive contacts.
I had no luck riding into the sun with shaded sun shields or add on strips, even tape as they are too close to the eyes.
I have the HJC Sy-Max II helmets. The Super-Visor really makes morning and evening riding into the sun a pleasure. No squinting. I think the are about $15 each.:2thumbs:

I have the cymaxII also.. you could put in the tinted outer shield on and with the tinted inner shield should be very dark.. I usually have the outer shield up and the inner down.. You could try the 3m tint at home depo on the shield.. only cost ya the price of the tint and shield if it doesn't work. make sure you use soapy water when you put it on and squiggy all the bubbles out.
