mpg

A Tankful

I haven't done the MPG, but with approximately 1200 miles on my RT-L, I'm getting about 200 miles per tankful. I'm happy with that, though hoping everyone is right & will be getting more as I go.

200 miles per tank is ballpark. 39 - 40 mpg.

3,000+ miles on my 2014 RT-S. Averaging right around 40mpg, figured using total miles and gallons used over the live of the vehicle, not each separate fill up. Most riding 2 up (wife won't let me out of the house without her on the Spyder ;)) Very pleased!

I have read lots of reviews on the mpg of the RT Limited(2014)...How at 60-65mph can get you 52mpg....I would love to know the secret...I normally don't pay attention to mpg but yesterday I went on my 1st turnpike ride on the RT..I put 216 miles on her...Now, After 155 miles(125 on the turnpike), I stopped to fill up because the needle was getting real low. I put 4.9 gls in..That comes out to a hair over 30mpg..I kept it at 60-68 on the turnpike...I was hoping to get atleast 40 mpg so I was somewhat and still are concerned...Most of my riding on day trips will be country rds avg maybe 50mph..So I am thinking I will avg in the mid 20s mpg.....I don't use the eco mode but I do shift pretty close to that...Could there be something wrong with the machine or is this a case of operator error?

My wife and I did a similar trip on the PA turnpike a couple of weeks ago. Did between 65 and 70 mph for about 120 miles. Filled up the next day, got my standard 40 mpg. I may be due to my wife's pedaling!! Can't just have her sit back there! She needs to do something in order to ride, right? ;)

After our ride today, just over 100 miles 2up, some in town, some out on the road 65 mph, ended up with 38.8 on this ride.
It was a little windy, but nice.

As others have said, 52 is a bit out of line. Not sure where that number came from.
At about 2,300 miles on my RT, I'm getting about 35 mpg.
The real answer here is, you can't get an accurate mileage with only one tank.
Did you fill it up a little more on the tank you measured your miles with ?
To accurately measure your mpg, you should track your mileage over at least three fill-ups. More if you can.
Eco mode is a waste.
I'm pretty sure BRP could add the estimated MPG and miles to empty to the display cluster.
I think those numbers could be valuable.

Agreed!!!

I have put 4000 miles on my 2014 RT Ltd, and have never seen more than 35 mpg. I consistently get around 30. I never use ECO mode, and I tend to accelerate fairly rapidly. Most of my miles are on country roads, but even on highway rides in West Texas (with a passenger) I don't see anything close to 40mpg. But I didn't buy the Spyder to save on gas. I figure that the difference in a fun 30mpg and a careful 40mpg cost me about $30/1000 miles. The thrill is worth it.

Why worry about a 10 to 15 mile per gallon difference!? The cost savings is trivial versus the fun and performance of the 2014 RT. I read about all the hundreds and thousands of dollars spent on farkles to make the ride more enjoyable after spending tens of thousands on the spyder alone. To then read that you're worried or slightly disappointed about a few extra miles per gallon... Which result in a few dollars per tank, lol. Just let the machine do it's job, and ride the way you want and like to ride... Take the Eco mode off and twist the throttle hard and feel the 3 cylinder suck in that gas!

Nothing is wrong with your spyder... Sit back and enjoy the lower gas prices at the pump for a little lol. $2.98 per gallon in the Atlanta area.

While I DO agree with your, "Ride more, and worry less" approach; 93 octane is still well over $4.00 per gallon up here.

Gas Prices

Even if it is $4 per gallon, assuming you ride 10,000 miles and average 30 miles per gallon, you would need to spend a whopping $333 per year ($27.75/month) more then us southern, taxed-less, republican, gas guzzlers lol. Not worth the effort of tracking mpg's unless you're not trusting your gauges. I just use the 150-175 mile rule to fill back up and stretch the legs anyway.

All this talking about miles and the spyder, are making me itch to take it out for a ride!

90 octane--our highest octane, is now selling for $3.76 to $3.86 in Eagle River/Chugiak. So far, the lowest price this year.

Love your posts!

I get such great information from this site, everyone that owns a Spyder should be on here. When I 1st got my new 2014 I made the same mistake I did with my 2011. I got behind my (Buddies?) on RS's & kept up with them on some hard rides in some very tight curves. Didn't even think about, nor read about, tire break in before attempting to try & keep up with those guys, let alone other important break ins. See my wife is the smart one (She reads books & stuff). Me, I just ride. If I really want to know something I just toss her the book & say "let me know if there is something I should pay attention to"nojoke Thank goodness the 2014 is so forgiving when you do something stupid. I took a very ill advised ride with the guys a few months back, with less than 500 miles on the new :f_spider: & had a hell of a time keeping up, & I was thinking, its got a bigger motor, why is the acceleration so bad? Luckily I didn't know to take off the ECO mode :banghead:, but then again if I had I probably would have been in the bushes! Now that I have seen Bob's graph & I have a few more miles on my little darlin, I can't wait to get back out & see what she can really do. Keep the post's coming guys, this site I read & pay attention to all the advise!:) I will say I do get great gas mileage in ECO Mode, no matter how I drive, but I didn't buy it for gas mileage, but is a nice bonus compared to my 2011 RTS.

Steve,My wife and I returned from S.Dak. the end of august and our last tank when we got home had a M.P.G. of 51(pulling a trailer also). We were on county back roads and I d/n get over 55 MPH due to being in deer country. I short shifted and I d/n use echo mode due to the fact that I have riden motorcycles and driven manual shifted vehicles most of my life so I feel I can tell were the torque band is in an engine,so it is possible. Normally the wife and I average 38 to 40 MPG under normal riding conditions.(BTW-fuel used was SHELL & BP premium/no ethanol were we live in those grades). Good luck and safe riding! Im a new 2014 RTS owner..what are the shifting points?
A lot of folks seem to like grabbing gears in the 2,500, to 2,700 rpm range.
I like to shift a bit earlier; 2nd and 3rd are engaged at 2,000 rpm or so, and 4th, 5th and 6th at about 2,500 rpm.

AND... :welcome:

My SE5 will not try unless over 3k, and I seem do do better ethanol free @50mpg hwy 30-35town , according to :gas cubby app on iPhone fyi. Few extra min at the pump to input data, but does all the math for me and keeps track of total expenses, gas and maintenance on multiple vehicles.
