I use my GPS all the time and I've gotten use to having it in a location that I didn't have to take my eyes off of the road. The factory location was okay but just not where I like it so I took the time to move it today.
The first thing I had to do was to reroute the wiring harness and that meant I had to cut the power lead to fish the cable through the bars.
This is on the right side just under the passenger grab handle. As you might notice I needed to give this area a good cleaning.
I don't know this for a fact but I'm pretty sure you can wire up any GPS that has an audio output lead on it. What you're looking at here is the BRP plug that goes to the supplied harness that's already on your RT (audio). All it's doing is giving you a ground and power and a male 3.5mm connector. All this will do is power up your GPS and keep it charged and give you audio through the speakers (not the headsets).
After seeing this first hand I know now that I could wire up a Garmin 665 and have the weather overlay on the GPS too.
I made a mount where the fuel gauge use to be so I had to fish the wire from there and hope that I had enough cable to make it back to the plug. It worked out just fine and here's the route I took.
I pulled my left headlight and routed the cable over the frame.
I had to pull the speaker grill to help fish the cable through.
I had to cut a little relief to get the cable to go behind that tab.
I had about 5" to spare and that gave me enough play when I pull the dash cover.
I used a RAM mount on the backside of the GPS mount and that lets me put it just where I want it. It's loose in this picture.
So now it right where I want it and I don't have to take my eyes off the road to look at my GPS. I'm really happy with the install and I'm going to use the BRP mount for another RAM ball to mount a cup holder on long trips and maybe my iphone when I want to look at the weather radar.
I'll be replacing the speakers next while I'm at it.
