Moved my GPS

I use my GPS all the time and I've gotten use to having it in a location that I didn't have to take my eyes off of the road. The factory location was okay but just not where I like it so I took the time to move it today.

The first thing I had to do was to reroute the wiring harness and that meant I had to cut the power lead to fish the cable through the bars.

This is on the right side just under the passenger grab handle. As you might notice I needed to give this area a good cleaning.

I don't know this for a fact but I'm pretty sure you can wire up any GPS that has an audio output lead on it. What you're looking at here is the BRP plug that goes to the supplied harness that's already on your RT (audio). All it's doing is giving you a ground and power and a male 3.5mm connector. All this will do is power up your GPS and keep it charged and give you audio through the speakers (not the headsets).
After seeing this first hand I know now that I could wire up a Garmin 665 and have the weather overlay on the GPS too.

I made a mount where the fuel gauge use to be so I had to fish the wire from there and hope that I had enough cable to make it back to the plug. It worked out just fine and here's the route I took.

I pulled my left headlight and routed the cable over the frame.

I had to pull the speaker grill to help fish the cable through.

I had to cut a little relief to get the cable to go behind that tab.

I had about 5" to spare and that gave me enough play when I pull the dash cover.

I used a RAM mount on the backside of the GPS mount and that lets me put it just where I want it. It's loose in this picture.

So now it right where I want it and I don't have to take my eyes off the road to look at my GPS. I'm really happy with the install and I'm going to use the BRP mount for another RAM ball to mount a cup holder on long trips and maybe my iphone when I want to look at the weather radar.

I'll be replacing the speakers next while I'm at it.

Perfect

WOW, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'VE HAD IN MIND & BEEN WANTING TO DO:2thumbs:

On one side, I want the GPS & on the other, a rear dual view camera system to have one on Teddy while Ryding & the other for a view of when I'm pulling my camper or trailer. This is exactly how I had planned the placement but wasn't sure how to go about it. Mind telling me which ram-mount that you used? :hun:

I love this set-up & looks great Lamont:2thumbs:

Oh, btw, Happy BIRTHDAY in lyke 30 minutes :joke:

Yet another reason why this is one of the best forums on the world wide web :2thumbs::doorag: Love the mount and placement...

I used this to the back of the gps

I made the mount to the dash but if you took a blank from a bone stock RT that doesn't have the analog gauges I'm sure you could mount your ball to that just like I did on this plate.
You might be able to use something like this with a plate on the back.

Ok, I checked out the 2 ball mounts you suggested, but what about
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=494&pictureid=13419
The long-arm attachment? & does the power cord come up thru this fixture?
Sorry for all the questions, but I've never dealt with ram-mounts before & the past couple weeks I've been see'n so many that I'm just overwhelmed :gaah: right now :( thanks again for all your GREAT advice :firstplace::bowdown:
The power audio cables do not pass though the RAM arm.

There is a notch in the bracket that bolts to the dash so the cable can pass through.

A GPS related question...(and a rant)

When you disconnected the GPS from the harness did the intercom and headsets cease to work? I have had the GPS harness since the purchase of my RTS and when it was plugged into the receptacle behind the saddle bag it disabled those functions and I could not even get to them on the dash display using the mode button. Of course BRP's answer is "Only the BRP branded Garmin will work with their system". I was told this several times by two dealers. A GPS wasn't even plugged into the harness! Besides, the only difference btwn BRP and standard Garmin is the addition of all BRP dealers in the POI's. I guess I will call Carlo again to see if he can get this resolved which he promised to do on 02 Dec. It's been sitting at the dealer's since 15 Nov.

Call me and I'll try to figure out what you're saying. I still have the panels off so I can test it for you. 423-552-0728

Any Issues

I know with it being winter still, you've probably not been out much if at all. Im curious if you've been able to actually test out how well the position of the GPS being there is, if you've noticed any issues with glare, visibility, vibrations or anything else?

I've got a rear-view monitor system that I'm going to mount on the one side, and a GPS for the other. What size is your GPS screen? The one I have ordered is 7" & I'm thinking its gonna be kinda large for that area, but not sure.

:firstplace:I do love what you've done, and hopefully can follow your pics when i get ready to do mine. I (1 of many I'm sure) appreciate you sharing all the different mods that you've done. You help so many of us

I have not had a chance to ride it yet but I'm sure there will be no issue with glare or vibration. The GPS I have on there now is a 4.3" screen, any bigger than that would be too big and would block the speedo.

This is a 7" screen mounted on my GS.

Took a ride with the GPS yesterday in it's new location and I give it an 8 out of 10. I like it better than where it was but I think having it in the middle up high would be the best place for it. I'm not unhappy with it and it may just take some getting use to but on my RS I have it up on top of the dash and that works best for me.

WOW! You still ride the RS! :yikes:

It's been so long since we heard any RS stories I thought you retired it? :roflblack::roflblack::joke:

I got my 7" rear view camera system in last week. Took the LCD out to the Spyder & yup, there's no way that things gonna fit :( no biggy tho, I just sent the 7" LCD back & asked for the 5" LCD instead. Kept the cameras as they are high quality & only about the size of your thumb, so they should work fine.

Let me ask you this, have you (or anyone out there) made a custom dash for the RT yet? I'm kinda dream'n here, but if I can get it done, I want it. I don't ever look at my analogue speedo or tach since all that info is on the RT's LCD. So my think'n here would be, a custom dash lay-out with a 5" LCD for GPS to the left, the normal RT LCD in the middle and another 5" LCD to the right for the rear-view camera system. Any Thoughts??? You could even leave the lay out as it is & just have the custom lay-out over-lay the analogue Speedo & Tach, maybe??? I've ordered the black bezel that holds the instrument cluster in place so I can have a fabricating shop look at it & tell me what they think. I'd love to do this layout in diamond plate along with other diamond plate accents on my RT-S and also on my Moto-Mate Camper

Tell me if you think this is theisable or am I just dream'n:pray: thanks.
