There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Does the Hum last forever or does it cut out after a few minutes?

If it is a hum, instead of a whistle, I suspect it is the cooling fan running. That is normal, and doesn't last as long as the throttle body thing..

It took removing all my body panels, but I finally heard the other sound. More like a high pitched whistle. I guess my ears are not as good as you other folks. I can't hear dog whistles, either. ;)

My dealer gave me a copy of their "What's News" BRP Bulletin dated January 20, 2011. It is published by the Dealer Support Group. It sure would be nice if we could get these and post them on SpyderLovers! Any chance of that happening Lamonster?

2011 Spyder RT with Humming Noise

When prepping 2011 Spyder RT models, you may
notice a faint "humming" or "buzzing" noise coming
from the area under the center glove box after the key
is turned off. The humming will continue for 40 minutes
each time the key is shut off unless interrupted by
another start sequence or an MPI is connected. This is
normal and they will all do it. What you hear is the
Electric Throttle Actuator( ETC) holding the throttle
plates fully closed until the engine cools down. This
feature will allow a normal start up when the engine is
completely heat soaked.

Naw, that's why we have Scotty :2thumbs:

:agree:Cold facts are OK, But with Scotty we get years of experience and interesting insights.:2thumbs:
.....or a lot of BS, you never know for certain. :roflblack:

Actually, I wish I had access to "What's News" on BossWeb, and to the Service Bulletins. That information could head off a few problems...or get owners and their techs on the same page more quickly. Even the dealers have trouble keeping up, as evidenced by the surprise Warranty Campaign my tech found in answer to my suspension problem.

I noticed the noise in question the first time I rode my RT S home from the dealer a little more than a month ago. It sounded to me like the faint whistle ecsaping air makes as it exits a small hole. I immediately thought I had picked up a puncture but I was in no mood to deal with my bad luck right then. I checked the tires before my next ride, (using the well-known kicking method), and discovered all three were in spec. ;)

Now I've read the bulletin I'm undobtedly wiser, but I still don't understand where that noise is coming from or what causes it. Throttle plates??? Give me a break, for a simple guy bulletins written by engineers are generally too technical by a mile. :dontknow:

Simple version: If your RT makes a noise after switching off it's OK. They all do that.

is that a "feature" on 2010 and 2011 models?

this low hum thing... or something they modified in the 2011 models

Now I know why I have to turn the throttle very once in a while to get it to start. Always learning something new on this thread.

The hot restart problem has been a pain on the RT since its introduction. For 2011 the BRP engineers have banished it forever. I don't care if they made it hum, whistle...or cluck like a chicken, it is a welcome improvement. I had a lot of trouble with hot restarts on my 2010, and have had no trouble whatsoever with my 2011.

There are two springs on the throttle bodies, one to assist opening and one to assist closing. I don't remember the degree that it's held open after shut off but it was held open. Trust me on this I called the tech with the same question.

I'm not really trying to be dense or argue with anyone here here.

I just have a difficult time conceptually understanding why the ECU needs to be on for 40 minutes to hold the throttle plates closed.

It may very well be it has to be on for 40 minutes to do some function having to do with hot restarts but ...

I've had a Spyder throttle body in hand and I thought the plates were held closed by a spring. A spring maybe not as robust as on a cable operated mechanism, but robust enough to keep the plates slammed shut.

A shop manual drawing seems to confirm this-

The way Kurt explained it to me, on the 2010 the throttle body was purposely cracked about 5%, in addition to other, associated procedures, to assist in cold starting. It has something to do with the fly-by-wire throttle (and likely its programming). What or why is a mystery to me, but the results are remarkably effective. The 2011 works much better. I hope there is an update for the 2010 ECM soon.

No wonder batteries are going dead. 40 minutes? Mine has done this since day one, but it sounds a whole lot more like a high voltage ballast as on HID headlights (or a mosquito buzzing in your ear). But thats just me.:dontknow:
I have had no dead battery issue or any issues for that matter, though.
I'm a happy :spyder2: ryder.

He talked about the draw too and it was very little, less than a remote.
